CHICAGO (CBS) ― The City of Chicago is basically closed for business on Aug. 17, a reduced-service day in which most city employees are off without pay. City Hall, public libraries, health clinics and most city offices will be closed.
Emergency service providers including police, firefighters and paramedics are working at full strength, but most services not directly related to public safety, including street sweeping, will not be provided.
That also includes garbage pickup. Residents who receive regular collection on Mondays should expect trash to be picked up on Tuesday. Some other customers may experience a one-day delay as collectors catch up.
Saw a report on TV that the meter maids are working though.

Oh, so that was why my flight to Chicago was cancelled
Or maybe it was the broken engine?

Ha! I wish I had my own security detail! :D And of course, I'm sure the parking police will be out in full force.

Actually, I was paying a cab driver as I came back to the office from our studio and we got harassed by the meter maid. I mean, can I please have a second to pay the guy and get out of the damn cab?

No Lee, next week Chicago will implement the pay and roll rule. You pay and roll from the moving cab. Your issues are not a concern. :D

It really is a little crazy. I think I'm going to write a letter to City Hall about it.

If you were flying into O'Hare, if an ant within a 50 mile radius of the airport farts, it will generate enough wind for them to close the airport ;)

Chicago closed. Naw
Just wait until the banks "take a holiday" next week. ;) OH wait were not allowed to say that lets try "We are closing to better serve our customers needs, by counting the money." :(

The parking meters are now owned by Morgan Stanley and are a private for-profit business. That's why the rates skyrocketed.

They sure did. It's insane what they charge now. People are really angry about it too.

What are the going rates per hour?
In North Hollywood some I've seen are at $4/hr. City Hall has thought about doing something similar as Chicago, and they've also talked about a demand cost implementation where at the busiest times it could shoot upwards of $20/hr.
As far as furloughs go, most LA courts closed last Friday and most government offices have to shut down once a month. Good times.
