Is it possible to connect my Macbook Pro (17in sept '07) to a 5.1 surround system? (and actually get 5.1 audio)
The speakers are Logitech Z-5500 series.

(There's also a basic stereo aux input on the side)

TOS link cable into the digital input.

And how does the TOSlink connect to the Macbook? EDIT: Got it, seems to just connect to the normal headphone jack.
I've also come across the Griffin Firewave (discontinued). There's a few on eBay, would this be better or worse quality?

Go to apple.com store and search for mini to toslink cable.

Yes, use the optical port. But don't use Quicktime, it's a piece of junk for digital audio. Get Plex or XBMC.
