View Full Version : Who is having trouble with GPush?

I bought GPush for 99 cents today. GPush is supposed to use the push notification service to let you know whenever you get new mail on your Gmail account.
Well, it worked for the first few mail messages I received before it started acting up. I exchanged mail with their support rep, who I must admit has been responsive. According to him, they have discovered a few new bugs and the engineers are working to fix them. (Yeah, sounds like the standard response.)
The interesting thing is, they say that some customers are having problems while GPush is working for others. I am wondering if it's really the case. Is GPush working well for any of you out here who's using it?
TIA!

GPush isn't even working for me. Purchased it this morning and it worked once and now it is completely unresponsive. :(
I get it to authenticate but it does not push any emails through. I ever restarted and made sure notifications were enabled. :( I want this to work!

So do I. Sure, $1 may not be much, but I'd expect a paid app to work better, or at least to work! :(

It's not working for me too.
It's been around 2 hours and 4 emails since - not a single notification.
My main concern in purchasing this app was for battery life since there is not more "Fetch" every 15 minutes. Their twitter feed apparently states that there emails are being pushed though, less "some bugs".

Mine was one that worked at first and then stopped. I go into the app every once in a while to see what's up. Last night it actually popped up a message that my credentials were refused by GMail but after a few attempts I got it to accept but still didn't recieve notifications. They suggest rebooting your phone and changing your password. I'm not about to change my password on my computer, my phone and my google voice apps just to get their app working. Just fix it!

And the silliest thing is actually the advertised promo price of .99 before it reverts to 1.99!
The nerve of that!
Haha but I'm sure it will be sorted out soon. Just sitting back and drumming my fingers in the time being.

Our company is working on a similar app. It will actually work unlike GPush. However, it will be pricier than $0.99 because maintaining the servers to support the system reliably is expensive.
I will try to release some alpha-version screenshots to you guys soon :)

I was super excited for this app as well ever since I found about it. Waited patiently, and bought it right away when it was finally released.
I am having better luck than most of you here, but that's not saying much. I get push notifications randomly. Maybe about 10 to 20% of the time. Very disappointed so far.
On their site, they claim they're working on a fix. We shall see...

It's up!
2 hours, 5 notifications since.
What I like about the app is that after I read the email, the little number by the side of the app disappears. It's unobtrusive and I like it's streamlined interface.

Quick Tip: After setting GPush with your Gmail account for the first time, do not go back into the app... issues start to arise when you do.
That's probably why I never had issues with it... I put it to the last screen and forgot about it.
I also heard the same somewhere else from one of the devs I believe.

I concur! I just downloaded it moments ago, and it has been working very well for me. However, because GPush has the badge notifications, I may revert back to it once the issues have been resolved! Another note, I like the fact that PushMail has a unique sound notification. GPush uses the same sound alert as SMS.

I don't think the app's very first screen should be so sensitive. What is the deal with "Don't open the app after you've entered your credentials"? At the very least, there should be three "tabs" at the bottom of the app, with the first being a welcome/splash screen with brief instructions or something. That would eliminate this nonsense of never opening the app again, or risk interrupting the authentication process.

3-5 seconds constantly over 10 test emails.
I'll be noticing the increment of battery life over the next couple of days after deactivating Fetch completely. If the app stays up it'ld just have managed to pull out a dual purpose.

I so wanted GPush to work, but after having VERY sporadic notifications over the last couple of days I thought I would risk the £1.79 to see if Pushmail was any better.....and it really is! Actually almost instant reliable notification and I really like how it shows you the first part of the message as well.
With the addition of pushed badge count and some other features (look at their twitter page) it looks like it will end up being a winner. I'm going to keep GPush as well for the time being as if they (hopefully) fix the problems soon then it will work well with pushmail to provide a badge count. But its going to take some significant "extra" features to make me switch from Pushmail totally.
Sorry GPush, I really wanted to like you but unfortunately its just one of those things!

GPush randomly worked for me last night at about 3am. Waking me from a sleep that took me so long to fall into. I know it's my fault for leaving it on (even though my phone was only on vibrate) but what a terrible time to decide to work. However, it has since stopped working again.
Edit: Also, has anyone had more/less success using a user name and domain name or are most of you just using your user names?
i.e. jimbo3 or jimbo3@gmail.com?

For PushMail app, you instruct gmail (for example) to send a copy of the mail to yourusername@dopushmail.com?
How do you do that?
Does PushMail support Hotmail accounts as well?

PushMail supports any email that allows forwarding. So if Hotmail lets you forward to another address, PushMail works.
I switched from Gpush to PushMail yesterday. It works BEAUTIFULLY. I got fed up with Gpush after it not working well the past few days. PushMail is the real deal, folks. Gpush is nice since it has the badge of unread emails, but really, since you are getting notifications of each time you get an email, how many unread you have shouldn't be unknown information. Gpush's catch is that it doesn't work lol. PushMail is now only 2.99 and it has a 4.5 rating. GET IT.

Well, PushMail works.
Their interface is different.
PushMail activates upon a forwarded mail to your own user created email address in the PushMail domain. It just "informs" the app on your iPhone of a new incoming.
GPush syncs with google's servers to inform you of a new incoming - hence the reason why you have to key in your gmail username / password. That might be a concern for some.
Hence, GPush allows for badge notifications of unread messages, as it is constantly synced with gmail in real time.
In a way, that is useful too, because you may have 5 unread mails, and you go through 3 of them. Badge notifications will still indicate 2 as unread. Under the FAQ of GPush it advises for the app to be placed on the same screen as mail app to allow for fast response without swapping pages. PushMail, on the other hand, can be thrown to the last page after installation without further occurrence.

Hotmail only lets you forward to certain domains. Basically it won't let you forward to a gmail adress or anything like that. It may allow forwarding to a Pushmail domain, I'm not sure.

This is what appears under the Hotmail Options page for mail forwarding:
Forwarding
You can forward your mail to one other e-mail address that ends in hotmail.com, msn.com, live.com, or is part of Windows Live Custom Domains.

I posted this in another thread but its fits in this topic also. If you guys want TRUE push email for Gmail and/or AOL try nuevasync.com. Its 25.00 a year but I think its worth it. Im using it for AOL and my mail gets pushed in 5 secs. They offer a 3 day trial so you can test it yourself.

Yup, mines working really well now. Notifications within seconds of getting an email through and the badge is updating quickly as well.
Having said that I will probably still stick with Pushmail for the moment only because I have realised the very useful feature of being able to set my work e-mail out of office to auto forward on to the @dopushmail address to alert me to any emails I've been sent whilst out of office. I then know I need to check our web email access rather than doing it sporadically when out of office just in case. Very handy!
Still keeping Gpush for badges though at the moment and I've paid for both so we'll see what happens with both of them!

Speed12 - Since you have both, just wanted to ask a question, if you wouldn't mind.
For either of these apps, are the notifications only the latest email you received? Say I receive 5 emails, will the blurb/notifications on my lock screen indicate that I have 5 new emails, with a little description of each? Or will it only show the blurb/notification for the most recent email? And then I would have to look at the badge number to figure out how many new emails I actually have?

For PushMail:
It appears that the notification is only for the most recent email — i.e., once you either press "OK" or slide to unlock, prior notifications are not queued/displayed.
For GPush:
Well, unfortunately, I couldn't test because the app has once again stopped pushing notifications to me as of 6:20 PM CST. Can anyone else chime in here?

For GPush, the notification bubble will only display the most recent email. So if you had one notification and then got another email, your lock screen will only show the description of the new email. However, the GPush app will show a "2" on the badge.

I have both apps.
PushMail alerts only the most recent mail, or any incoming for that matter. Once you have slid the unlock screen the matter is laid to rest thereafter.
Gpush has the advantage of badge icons that displays the number of unread mail. The badge icons update in real time once you have opened the mail from gmail.
How I use mine now is I disable alerts from Gpush and place it on the main screen above mail app. The badge notifications is useful to me as I read certain mails at times and leave some mails for later. It reminds me that there are still unread.
Alerts are left to PushMail, which is thrown to the last screen as it has no badges. However it displays a notification screen with a preview of the mail, which is useful so I know who the sender is and what the subject title is. Gpush does not have this utility.
I spend a total of $3.99 to have the best of both worlds - badge notifications, alerts and preview. But it seems like I'm really using one app sice PushMail is install-and-forget.

GPush has been working really well for me the past 12 hours or so. Hopefully it continues. Last night I was on facebook on my computer and I was getting wall post notification emails popping up on my phone before facebook even updated to show me the posts. I just tested it again and it took probably about 15-20 seconds to get an email.
Edit: Though, I did get an email in the middle of the night and looked over to see the notification. I didn't unlock the screen or anything but this morning when I did the notification was gone. That might be Apples problem and not GPush's, I'm not sure.

The GPush developers have said over Twitter that the next app update will contain the option to pick the alert sound. No word on when that version will be submitted to Apple, or how long until after its submitted that it becomes approved.
