Can You Unlock an AT&T Serviced iPhone for T-Mobile

I have a new 32GB White 3GS iPhone with AT&T but is it possible to port it over to T-Mobile by unlocking it and just what does that do to the warranty from Apple and all software updates etc.

use the search funtion there is millions of threads on this quick answer yes you can unlock it and the warranty will be voided
 
You can jailbreak the phone with Redsn0w, and then unlock it by downloading ultrasn0w from cydia. "Technically" it voids your warranty, but as long as you do a DFU restore on it in iTunes before you take it in, and if it has an active AT&T sim card in it, they will service it no problem. I have had mine on T-Mobile forever and got it replaced like 2 months ago for a crack. 🙂
 
Also, as 3G frequencies for T-Mobile aren't compatible with the iPhone, your 3G won't work.

You'd be stuck with EDGE speeds.

The 2g iPhone can be jailbroken and unlocked with redsn0w right? When I used redsn0w to jailbreak my 2g, I checked the unlock box as well and that should be all.......I think?

On my 2G, I used pwnage and it created a custom firmware that I restored my phone to. This automatically installed Cydia. My 2G is running 2.2.1. With 3.0, use Redsnow.

That's correct, redsn0w and previous versions of quickpwn has had bootneuter built in, and it will unlock and jailbreak all at the same time. If for whatever reason it doesn't unlock, just easily download bootneuter from cydia to unlock the device.

The most notable one is that the 3G iPhone won't be able to connect to T-Mobile's 3G network. T-Mobile's 3G network operates on the 1700 MHz frequency, with which the iPhone 3G (nor any 3G phone not specifically made to work on T-Mobile's network) is not compatible. So, if you're choosing between a first-generation iPhone and an iPhone 3G or 3GS, a first-generation iPhone will get you the same data speeds as the newer iPhone models on their network.

About 1G. *rimshot*

Anyways, as it was stated, the 3G can only operate on EDGE speeds, but you can still use the GPS chip built in the 3G. Internally most parts are the same between the 2G but the 3G was available in higher storage capacities. If you can get a decent deal on a 16GB 3G, I say go for it. 🙂
