I'm about to Jailbreak my brother's old iPhone 2G. I have plenty of instructions on how to do it, but I've read a lot of conflicting information on how to update the iPhone when new iPhone firmware comes out. Is there a basic tutorial on how to do this and whether it's necessary to back up information and apps? I will not be using non-app store apps, I'm only jailbreaking to get around the data plan. I don't want to make a frustrating mistake when the new jailbreak 3.0.1 firmware is available.

You can always back up your phone and restore to default or restore from backup if you ever want to re-jailbreak after updating to the latest firmware. A tutorial can be found somewhere in this forum (I think).

Since you aren't using non-Apple apps, it won't matter about backing your jailbroken stuff up. Just watch closely here (www.blog.iphone-dev.org) and they will tell you what to do when upgrades come out.

Obviously dont update if there isnt a jailbreak out yet. You'd be stuck without an iphone untill the jailbreak is released.
Wait for the update to come out and then for a jailbreak for you device to be released. Dont hit update when you get a message when you plug in your phone to itunes and it tells you theres a newer version of firmware.
