Navigon released a press release this morning, stating that v1.2 will be out for Europe soon and will feature text-to-speech and integrated iPod controls (so you won't have to leave the program to change playlists or songs). It will also feature auto day/night modes.

http://www.navigon.com/site/int/en/press/archive/2009/549

Hamburg, 18 August 2009 - Since the iPhone has been equipped with NAVIGON MobileNavigator software, Apple smartphone owners have been guided to any destination in up to 40 countries in Europe reliably and conveniently - with a host of functions to make navigation simple and safe, including Reality View Pro, Lane Assistant Pro, Speed Assistant and easy operation specific to the iPhone, such as vertical and horizontal map display as well as automatic continuation of navigation following telephone calls. NAVIGON expanded the comprehensive feature set shortly after launch with extras such as the route planning function and Radar Info.

Now, NAVIGON is again increasing the MobileNavigator's range of functions - with a whole series of features to make navigation even more convenient and getting to the destination more entertaining. "As stated, we have succeeded in making additional functions for the Apple iPhone available in a short period of time, and aligned the software to more of the device's characteristic control elements," says Gerhard Mayr, Vice-President Worldwide Mobile Phones & New Markets at NAVIGON. "The new, free software update includes the Text-to-Speech, iPod Control and Location Sharing functions as well as automatic switching between day and night mode. This means the MobileNavigator for the iPhone remains the right investment for our customers." The NAVIGON Text-to-Speech function is a valuable extra which helps to improve orientation in cities in particular. The feature reads out street names, allowing the driver to concentrate fully on the road ahead - and not on looking for hidden signs with street names that are difficult to read and divert attention from driving. "Our technology partner SVOX provides Text-to-Speech (TTS) in several languages to ensure safer navigation,"1 continues Gerhard Mayr. "

"Our SVOX Mobile product offers a tailored speech solution which can be integrated flexibly into mobile devices such as mobile telephones or mobile navigation devices," says Eric Lehmann, Chief Sales Officer for SVOX AG in Zurich. "We are delighted to have augmented the precise NAVIGON software with our solution, making navigation on the iPhone even more convenient."

Two new functions ensure increased entertainment. Seamless integration of the iPod Control means it is simple and quick to set up the required playlist on the integrated iPod while navigating. Simply select the iPod symbol on the map displayed to select playlists, titles and albums with ease, listen to songs again or leave it to the device to generate a random selection of songs. Another touch takes the user back to navigation. When the navigation software is making a voice announcement, the volume of the music currently playing is smoothly turned down.

The Location Sharing function ensures entertainment at the destination. Select an address or a POI such as a restaurant or museum, for example, and the destination can simply be emailed to friends and acquaintances. If the recipient also has the MobileNavigator, they simply click on a link with the address or special destination in the email to reach the meeting point via the fastest route - the navigation software starts automatically when the link is activated and guides the user directly to the destination. This means users can exchange positions and destinations with each other simply and conveniently.

Automatic switching between day and night mode is also practical and simple. The colours of the map shown change depending on the time of day or night, guaranteeing optimal clarity of display at all times. This allows drivers to recognise the route as quickly as possible, improves orientation and brings greater safety while driving.

Great! Now I hope TomTom gets off their duffs and announces what their first update will bring. Hopefully, TTS, lane assist, and a $30 price cut, so they can sell more...

Very cool! I have not yet made a purchase, but after reading this, I think this is the one I'm going with.

Question for anyone that will answer, hopefully wording this correctly. I'm very used to using Google maps for getting around when in unfamiliar areas. Example; when on vacation in Orlando last June, I need to run out for some stuff for the kids, and beer :), and simply searched for a walmart in the area. Google maps finds all within the area I currently am, and I can select one, and map directions to it from there. I know this might be a dumb question, but does Navigon do the same thing? Or must I have the actual address of the location I which to go to? i.e., not just be able to type walmart, or taco bell, or whatever?

Did that make sense? Thanks!

Very nice Navigon!

Now...I hope that tomtom wakes up, and announces something as good as these guys. Atleast Lane Assistant and TTS and iPod Controls would be nice

You can search for Points of Interest like a Walmarts in your area in Navigon but currently the search engine doesn't work very well. I found that narrowing it down by city works ok though.

Any stores built in the last year might or might not show up on Navigon's POIs but they probably will unless they are really really new on TomTom.

I think the easiest way is to search in google maps it's probably going to know more specific poi than navigon, and save it as a contact, then navigate to it in navigon.

Yep. I've been using Navigon for a couple of weeks and I've been thoroughly impressed. The addition of TTS will address my only major concern (other than the crappy POI search engine -- I use Maps/Contacts instead).

I just wish for one change & one addition and the v1.2 update would be perfect for me....

Fix the text legibility issue while navigating. Either remove the white stroke on the text, change it to black, or just use a larger black bolded font. Any of these would fix the issue.

Add in a route overview page so that I can see the route beforehand.

The app does allow you to see the overall route, but without detail (i.e. street names) iirc. From the map screen, tap the map, then tap the icon in the lower rt-hand corner. You should get an overhead map view that includes both your start and end points.

I understand this. Pointless across the state of Texas, or long trips though.

There needs to be a list view.

They need a listing, so you can see the route/roads you will be taking. TomTom does have that, but lacks in other areas.

Is he talking about street names outside, or from the app itself? :p

This was my sole reasoning for jailbreaking my iPhone. As previously said, it works great. The only thing some people *might* find annoying is that Navigon will continue to give voice prompts as you continue driving (over top of your conversation)... I actually like this behavior though.

Just purchased the Navigon software today. I'm about to leave the office and drive to a few places while using it. That said, I went outside to acquire a GPS signal (no chance of getting that in my office - which is steel and has special thermal coating on all the windows!). The 3GS/Navigon acquired my location very rapidly, and I've been impressed with the mapping and options that already in 1.1. For the most part, it exceeds the nav unit in my 2004 BMW X5.

Looking forward to 1.2 - especially now that I've seen the screen grabs posted in another thread.

I'm in agreement that the software needs the route listing in text format. I'd also really like the traffic data. Google Maps has been clutch for that info. I suppose I could start in Google Maps to get the traffic info and then go into Navigon, but that defeats the purpose. Hope that feature gets added soon.

Other than that, it seems that Navigon's software is much more polished that what I've seen with the TomTom release. TT needs to be more transparent about what's coming out next. At $100, they could at least do that much.

Thanks to all for the info on Navigon...it really helped me make my purchasing decision.

Add in a route overview page so that I can see the route beforehand.

If you start by specifying your journey via More->Route with your current location as your starting point, once you calculate the route you get an overview of the entire route which you can zoom into to street level. Once you're ready to go you can then start navigation.

You guys know if there is anyway with Navigon to reverse route? So when i choose to navigate to address B, is there anyway way to reverse that so it gets me back to where i started. Im not talking about the Take me home feature. The only way i can see to do it is to create a route, save it. Then go back into it, edit it, and move up the destination to the starting point.

I am in the market and checking out the facts between Navigon and Tomtom.

I must say that Navigons announcements are great - TTS upcoming, I also saw an announcement for TMC later down the road (1.3?) which is fantastic.

Tomtoms silence on their features and the car kit though make it hard to decide anything about them. I wish their communication skills were on the same level ;)

I'm curious if anyone would like this also -- I was driving around today with Navigon and I was thinking it'd be great if they gave us an icon to represent the strength of the GPS signal. That way, it'd help the user find the best spot in their car for the iPhone to be mounted and, personally, I'd just like to know how strong the signal is at a glance.

Well, not right away at least.

If it's true that the car kit will work with 3rd parties (remember this is TomTom who isn't exactly best at communicating info about their products), then NAVIGON will have to build in support in their app for it to work.

Yes, but if you bought navigon at the sale price and just got our free update they mentioned to 1.1... How much will it cost to update to 1.2?

To be honest i am not that impressed with 1.1 and experienced signal issues since free update so feel wasted free update. i hope they dont charge for the people that bought it early at least until 2.0

If you had read the press release linked to in the first post you would have seen the magic words "iPhone 3G and 3G S owners will soon be able to upgrade their NAVIGON MobileNavigator software with another free update that brings additional features. Agreed. iGO My Way has a GPS strength icon but I'd love to see a satellite constellation map indicating what satellites are in view.
The one thing that I do find helpful is that iGO places a small black dot on the map indicating the actual position of the GPS coordinates received. Sometimes it's off to the side of the actual road and the software snaps the vehicon to the road (all GPS's do this). You can also see how frequently it updates as well. Since it's showing the actual position reported by the GPS chip in the phone, you can see how accurate or inaccurate that chip is at any given time. 99% of the software is smart enough to snap to the road. If it wasn't there, I would never know that the actual position was slightly off.

I'm loving Navigon 1.1 and can't wait for 1.2 BUT I seem to have a problem that no one else has....

The Navigon voice simply stops working at different intervals. There is no rhyme or reason as to why it stops. I've tried everything from rebooting to not using the charger and still the voice prompts will simply stop at different points during navigation. (I know they stop because I push the square in the bottom left hand corner and "she" doesn't speak.)

It's bugging the hell out of me because everything else is perfect. I get a GPS connection in seconds and it stays constant. Rerouting happens flawlessly and I've never crashed.

Does anyone have any idea why my voice prompts simply stop working? Any help?

This was happening to me when the USB cable was connected to my car stereo. I realized later it was user error on my part. You have to select the input to USB for the voice to work when the USB cable is plugged in. If you have it plugged in and you're listening to FM, the iPhone will charge, the GPS will work, but you won't hear the voice.

^Agreed. This happened to me when I first got Navigon as well, and couldn't for the life of me figure it out until I made sure my car stereo had USB selected instead of the radio.

I love that you can set the volume on the Navigon voice to be lower when it guides you over the song that yor iPhone is playing...I was driving my friends into the city the other night, and they kept wondering why my "song" kept saying "Caution!" I had to tell them that that was the GPS telling me over the song that I was speeding at least 10 MPH over the speed limit...LOL.

Just wanted to say:

I have been using Navigon with my iPhone for a few weeks now, and I've been using it with a ProClip angled mount which sits next to my stereo -- not exactly ideal positioning for a GPS unit. It's been working well, but sometimes when it lost the signal I thought it was due to the positioning. I bought a Griffin Windowseat in best buy today and mounted the iPhone in landscape with a much better view of the sky, and Navigon really works flawlessly now. It was good before, but now it's terrific.

The only down side is that it's difficult to navigate through my music in landscape (stupid coverflow). I mean, you can't even change playlists or anything unless you flip it to portrait...kind of annoying.

i bought the griffin window seat today as well at best buys! Navigon works like a charm with it! at first i thought my iphone gps chip was malfunctioning but i guess you do need a good mount and to position it on the window somewhere for it to work and that fixed everything! I love it!

hasn't happened yet, and it seems quite sturdy. i have the iphone holder resting sideways on my dash. that would be annoying if it started falling off though. Did you clean the windshield and suction cup with an alcohol pad first?

I would hope that Navigon would improve on the map backgrounds. I can't stand the ugly olive green background that it uses and it makes the small street names impossible to read

http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/8007/navigonolivegreenmap.jpg

To even try and use this app in the day time, I had to switch it to night mode to hope to be able to read the street names. It's impossibe to use in day mode.

In my opinion Navigon at the moment is the best solution for TBT app in iphone. I have Navigon and TomTom on my phone, and was driving yesterday and tested both apps.

I like TomTom's UI and Map color way better, but with my TomTom it's lagging behind while navigating so much that it's pretty frustrating :( Navigon on the other hand is pretty precise, after turns both have a tiny lag but Navigon is still better. It seems TomTom lags like a hundred meters, it shows i'm making a turn while i have already gone past it.

You will need to have enough free space to install the new version prior to the old version being removed. In fact they recommend you have DOUBLE the free space that the application needs after install is completed.

Alternatively you can remove the app first, then install the new version.

Just for the record, the current Navigon app does have limited TTS.

It will speak the names of highways. For example: "Bear right onto I-271N" is actually spoken.

Of course as soon as you get off the interstates you just get "turn right in .5 miles".

That's not full TTS, letters and numbers are easy. Street names is what we want :D.

I noticed on their website it says that TMC (ie traffic) will be coming later this summer...

This summer is getting pretty late, yet I haven't seen any reference to TMC in the 1.2 update - Have i missed something, or have they delayed/cancelled plans for TMC integration?

Technically the have until September 22nd to submit the app and still meet their "deadline" for late summer. Since they submitted 1.2 to Apple last week, that gives them four weeks to get TMC in there. In that same time period between 1.1 to 1.2 they managed to add TTS and an in-app iPod interface, so I'm confident Navigon will meet their goal. They've been upfront and accurate with their plans so far.

Now that we're down to only 4 days before the price goes up, I have only one concern: the letting of street names. In all the screen shots I've seen, it looks almost unreadable... and certainly unreadable with a quick glance from the driver's seat.

The most important 'upgrade' I would be looking for is a change in the screen graphics.
I emailed them last week to ask if this was possible and 3 days later they responded with something like 'thanks for your request. All suggestions are forwarded to the development team'.
That was not very helpful.

Any comments?

I guess it depends how important you feel it is to be able to read street names as you drive. If you are using it to navigate you to a specific destination (as opposed to simply showing where you are) then the name of the street you are to turn into next is given along the bottom bar and can be switched between next street and current street just by tapping the bar. This is a large clear graphic and I find this sufficient for my needs. YMMV!

Any chance 1.2 will have screen lock control? I hate trying to remember to set it to never and then having to reset to 1 minute. Why doesn't it lock the screen on for you?

Stike
Aug 29, 2009, 02:54 PM
You mean avoiding the screen blackening out on you?

Actually the software already prevents this. Read their FAQ at the home page because there are specific (iPhone OS) reasons that prevent this from working sometimes. It is working fine for me...

Yeah, definitely something not right with your install or something. This app prevents (so long as you set it within the options) the display from sleeping. It's on by default. Maybe you changed it by accident when you first got the app?

If I had to change that option from the phone itself every time I used the app I would go insane!

I'm looking under Options right now and don't see it anywhere. Is it located somewhere else? Can you look on your iPhone and tell me where this option is enabled. I have an App called iTrail that doesn't allow the screen to sleep so I know my iPhone can do it.

EDIT: Just read the FAQ and I may not be accurate. It only dimmed and then I touched the screen (and it went back bright) so it wouldn't cut off. So it may stay on but dim. However I'm using a Griffin 3G certified charger cord so that shouldn't be an issue as stated in the FAQ's. I need it to stay bright (so I can see it ;) ).

2ed EDIT: Oddly it's staying bright running on just the battery so it must be related to my Griffin cord. I know my cord charges and is 3G certified. If the Griffin cord doesn't work what cords do?

jmpage2

Navigon is not the only application having these issues with screen brightness.

Applications can send a system call to the iPhone kernel that asks it not to dim the screen, as it normally would.

However, when playing music and running another application (Navigon) you will wind up in situations where the iPhone gets confused and re-dims the screen after a track change, etc.

This is probably going to be fixed in a future iPhone update (my guess).

I just thought of a sweet idea. Navigon, while riding a bicycle. Just start some music, launch navigon, plug in your headphones, choose a destination, lock the screen, and pop your phone in your pocket! You can follow the voice directions while riding your bike! It'll still suck battery, but it would be pretty cool (now I want to try it out...).

Possibly, my thought is that they timed the 1.2 release to come out after the price increase so now they are priced the same as TomTom and have some substantial functionality benefits over them for the same price. With this they have established a strong value proposition over TomTom. I wouldn't be surprised to see 1.2 available tomorrow. :-)

Navigon can see that Tom Tom is selling fairly well at $99 so it wouldn't surprise me to see them try that price for at least a while and try to sell quite a few licenses due to the extra features they currently have over Tom Tom.

If Tom Tom comes out with TTS, iPod management, etc, then maybe Navigon will drop the price again.

Personally I'm just hoping we see a traffic application from one of these two before year's end.

Don't know if I made the right decision or not, but I purchased the Navigon application for $70. I am going to purchase some kind of a generic type holder (so I can use the iPhone while still in the case) tomorrow.

I hope the turn by turn speech function shows up soon.

(I purchased the app so I would have navigation when I am required to take rental cars for my job, it is an extra expense they won't cover, and I carry so much stuff that not carrying a stand alone GPS is the way to go.)
