View Full Version : My iPhone sat on the table, turning itself on and off!

My iPhone was acting really weird yesterday.

I'd just looked at some emails and tried to turn off the phone. The 'slide to power off' bar kept appearing after just a quick tap of the on/off button and when I pressed Cancel each time it would just take a screen shot. The on/off button wasn't stuck or anything. Even if I held it down it wouldn't turn off.

After a while I managed to pick up a voicemail but the voice was really quiet. I turned up the volume and the phone then proceeded to turn it all the way down again. Several times. I just left it on the table and it sat there turning itself on and off.

Did a full restore and the problem was just the same so eventually I made an appointment at the Apple Store for today. Needless to say, by the time I went to bed there was no sign of a problem and the phone was working perfectly!

Took it in today anyway and it's still working fine but they've made a note of it alongside the serial number just in case it starts again. Hadn't had a single problem until then, but that was just crazy!

Sounds like some hardware that controls the keys went funny. Just hope it dosen't happen again, but if it does film it so you can show the Apple Store guys.

When this happens you can normally stop it from happening with a hammer. :D

...or an exorcism.

Edit: Also, it's probably a 99% chance that it means that AT&T is starting to enable MMS. It's a difficult process and it may mess up thousands of iPhones, but it's worth the risky process of flipping that switch.

LOL Nice one. I've also heard of other such as:
Sudden Stoppage (the device suddenly stopped after I bashed it with a rock)
Drop Test Failure (device broke when I dropped it off the roof)

Thanks again for that suggestion. I've been away for a few days and it was doing the same on and off. Last night I filmed it and today I took it back to the Apple Store. They've changed it for another one which I'm syncing at the moment.

Someone on this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=534268) wondered if it was caused by the Mobile Me app. Pity I didn't see that before I went!

Glad it's been replaced, hope all will be fine with the new one :)

Unless the app was running at the time I doubt it could have caused it IMO.
