my superdrive only reads some movie dvds, not all. These are studio, store bought dvds. My superdrive is:

Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW

Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

Something might be stuck inside the drive. Or just the years got to it. I think that they are not that expensive. Look at the apple store how much they are

you don't buy a new superdrive from the apple store. all you need is to buy any ATA optical drive. check out newegg. most of them are around $30.

I too had problems with my 2007 Mac Pro drives. Ended up buying one Samsung and one Pioneer and I have to say the Pioneer is way too loud for my taste. Its also not as fast as the Samsung.
