I have a first generation 13.3" black macbook and was wondering if this....

http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=31000&vpn=WD1001FALS&manufacture=Western%20Digital%20WD&promoid=1066#CustomerReviews

Would work in my macbook. I am looking to get a newer better hard drive and have heard Western Digital are excellent, so if this one won't work could someone suggest a better choice??

No it won't because it's a 3.5" drive. You need a 2.5" SATA drive like:
This (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD5000BEVT/)
or
This (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD3200BEKT/)

There are 500 gig drives available, just not from NCIX that I could see. Both Seagate and WD make ones that will fit.

Yes it will work but for an extra few bucks, I suggest This One (http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=33669&vpn=WD3200BEKT&manufacture=Western%20Digital%20WD). The 7200rpm is quite a bit snappier with startup and program launching. I'm very happy with this model and it works perfectly.

The current largest drives are 500GB for your MacBook.
