Afternoon all

My wife and I bought my 12 year old a nice iPod Nano for last Xmas, complete with engraved message on the back. He loved it - used it constantly and was rarely without it.

We moved house last week, he got himself out into the back garden for a while to chill while the removal men were in and...left the iPod on the garden bench. Took us a couple of days to remember where it was in all the confusion of the move, by which time (this being Scotland) it had been heartily rained on.

I left it drying out inside for 4 days before attempting to turn it on, as per the advice here and elsewhere, but no dice - it just won't turn on. So, I'm looking for advice on options:

- we could drive the 60 miles to the nearest Apple store in Glasgow
- I could send it to them (somehow)
- I could find an independent iPod fixer

I'd be grateful for any advice. My son's pretty distraught about the loss of his iPod so if anyone's had a similar experience that would be great. I'm guessing there's no way Apple will repair this under warranty as it was our fault.

Many thanks in advance...

I woul try putting it in a bag of rice and seal it, then leave it in there a few days and try to turn it on again. If that doesnt work you will have to buy a new one. If you bring it back to Apple they will give you 10% off a new one.

Apple won't cover it, as it the applecare is now void due to water damage.

I've never heard about this 10% off buzz.

If you can get hold of some silica gel, put the ipod in a small bowl of that for a couple of days (make sure it's submerged) Rice is generally the cheap and cheerful option.

Water damage sucks, and can't always be fixed. Sorry.

Hopefully Apple will give you some money off. Wait till September, new versions are coming out so :)

You could ring Apple up and say it just stopped working. There's a good chance they'll replace it. I know someone who put their nano through the wash and did this, and got a new nano. They had to send their old one off.

Doing that is probably illegal, though.

If you are proficient with swapping parts out, then there are plenty of websites that can supply parts, as well as procedures. You'll get to save the engraved case.

If not, then just buy a new one.

They won't do that if there is water damage.

I always shed a tear for the water damage stories.

Not much to do but soak in rice and wait. Christmas isn't too far away...guess you got an idea for his new present!
