strange symbol on phone and mail icons

For some reason my phone has started displaying a progress symbol on the lower left corner of the phone and mail icons. I have never seen this before. They appear about one second after I unlock the phone. The icons appear as normal and then 1 second later the symbol appears.

Does anyone know what this mean?

The same thing just happened to me. It was after Cydia made some updates. I'll try to see which ones it was.

For me it also appeared on the bottom left part of the iPod icon also.

And to answer your question, they're badges for backgrounder and you can disable them in backgrounders settings.
