Anyone here pre-ordered a set? I did and paid $236.00 shipped. Not too bad I think.

According to Amazon.com, it is sold out worldwide already. They aren't taking any more preorders.

Most overrated band of all time. Their music's depth and impact is far overstated. They have several catchy tunes, but nothing I would call terribly significant.
Suffice it to say they're the band you are expected to love and people gladly oblige.

I think the fact a hell of a lot of musicians cite The Beatles as an influence to the way they play/write etc shoots a massive hole in your argument...

Well, I agree they're no Captain and Tennille, but I still think they're alright.

I don't know--three of their albums, Rubber Soul, Revolver and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, raised the artistic quality of 1960's popular music to unprecedented heights.

I was able to pre-order a few copies prior to selling out. I figure I can always put them on eBay if I don't like it. :)

The difference in the mono versions is stunning. Stunning.

Excuse me but, most overrated band of all time? You're entitled to your opinion and you're not expected to like them, still you should take the following facts into account before making such a bold statement:
They revolutionized the art, production/engineering techniques, studio technology and just about everything we know about Popular music today.
-Pop single length/duration: (3:30)
-The Middle eight (bridge)
-Music Videos
-Flanging, Phasing effects
-Tape Loops
-First use of feedback as an effect on a record
-First use of reversed tape effects on a record
-Artificial/Automatic Double Tracking
-Going up to eleven!
-First conceptual record
-The list goes on!
And they accomplished so much in so little time (less than 10 years). Name just about any band that you love and you'll find some "Beatle" influence in them. Can you believe that Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was recorded on a 4 track tape machine and it still hasn't been surpassed today, in the age of protools, unlimited tracks, auto-tune and whatnot?
And we haven't even begun to discuss their sociocultural and political impact on the world...

Oh, come on. Where have you been, or is it that you were born after 1980, or maybe 1990?
Whether you like them or not (and I like them, but of course, not all of their music is timeless) their major impact on the development and evolution of popular music cannot be denied. In their day - the sixties - they were the biggest muscial act in the world and some of their stuff still sounds incredible, decades later.

I was so shocked by that comment that I forgot to reply to what this thread is all about. I got my mono box at a local store in Brussels on Wednedsay morning, the presentation is fantastic, I really love the LP replica packaging, all the way down to the inner sleeves. And the audio quality is brilliant, the songs sound far clearer than the bootleg vinyl rips that they are replacing. I am one happy customer!

i picked up Past Masters and The White Album. i've got to say, on the earlier tracks on Past Masters, i prefer the few that are mono to the hard panning on the vocals. i'm seriously considering opening up the audio files and remixing some of the hard panned vocals to center (or near center) myself. most of my listening has been with headphones though so that makes it more obvious. but i see it being very distracting in a car, where you have the vocals only coming out of the passenger side speakers. it is too bad they aren't selling both the mono and stereo remasters as individual albums. The White Album sounds great in stereo for example.

I'm not happy with the quality of the CDs, esp. rubber soul. (my favorite)
(also: the JONAS BROTHERS?! Seriously?!)

It's soooo tempting to grab the mono set when it's re-released, but that's a LOT of green to dish out for it :(.

Could be because the band broke up in 1970 and now half of them are dead.
I've been listening to the new release. The performances of course are identical but now the sound is cleaner. Better then on many new albums.
Although a big fan I had not listened to Beatles much in resent years, after all I'd head ever one of their songs 100 times. But now since last listing I've llearned a little about music, I can sort of play guitar bass and keyboard. Now when I listen I hear what they are playing. I can know what bass laine Paul is playing. My opinion now is --Those guys were great. Vocals are just "spot on" perfect. All before computers, with just a four track tape machine
Also, back then they were relleasing two full albums a year and touring at the same time. A very, very productive band. It all happen inside a 6 year period.
One thing that was great was Lennon's words. Mostly he went right over the top of most of his fans heads. Simple example: "Strawberry Fields Forever" Was Johns way of being anti-religoius or really anti mainstream religious. What he was saying of course was "Strawberry Feild's Forever" (That is apostrophe S not a plural S). He used a lot of these double and even tripple word mmeanings. He liked word games and has songs were full of them, un-notice I'm sure by 90% his fans. I'm noticing a lot more of them now, some of it I'm surprised that made it onto 60's radio

Kind of odd they don't offer the obvious : mono mix for the songs originally in mono and stereo for the songs originally in stereo...

That is exactly what they did for the albums. In fact all the albums presented in the current remastered catalog were released originally in both mono and stereo (apart from the odd mono track here and there). The mono releases of the the last 3 (Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road and Let It Be) were stereo fold-downs rather than dedicated mono mixes, they don't sound very good and are of no use to listeners now, so they weren't included.
The only current release that did not respect the original format is 'Past Masters', which is full of stereo mixes that were not yet made or released at the time.

I think Chuck Klosterman summed it up best in his review:
Chuck Klosterman Repeats The Beatles (http://www.avclub.com/articles/chuck-klosterman-repeats-the-beatles,32560/):
Like most people, I was initially confused by EMI’s decision to release remastered versions of all 13 albums by the Liverpool pop group Beatles, a 1960s band so obscure that their music is not even available on iTunes.
. . .
It is not easy to categorize the Beatles’ music; more than any other group, their sound can be described as “Beatlesque.” It’s akin to a combination of Badfinger, Oasis, Corner Shop, and everyother rock band that’s ever existed.
(The review is hilarious)
