This will provide users with brand new communication and information experience. The announcement ends months of rumors and speculation about Apple's entry into the Chinese mobile phone market. Few details were provided in the announcement. Just some more millions of iPhone will be sold.

Will they have full access to the App Store?

This could be massive for potential sales of the iPhone, assuming enough of China's huge population can afford the iPhone. I wonder just how many that is?

The Chinese know how to spend, and they love their designer goods, toys and marque cars even at the vastly inflated prices they sell for over there. The iPhone will be a sellout with any price tag.

oh please, as a poor ass college student in 2001 at shanghai, my cellphone was worth $750. An iPhone should be easier than affordable by now

I wonder what version of the iPhone will be available in 20001 ;)

No, seriously, this is good news for both Apple and users everywhere. If they have an App Store China, there'll be lots of opportunities for Apple to make more money, and for developers in China to make money. Also, non-Chinese developers might want to localise their apps for China now as their market has just gotten bigger.

Well, hopefully Apple can deliver some new iPhones to Europe before it is released in China... lots of european customers who preordered iPhone in July are still waiting for it, and estimated delivery is in the end of september...

This is an exciting opportunity for Apple to expand their market — but at what cost? I find it disturbing that they'll allow the iPhone to be sold there without WiFi ability. That means that Unicorn will completely control what users are able to access. It's strange, since any WiFi hotspots must go through one carrier or another in China. I'm not sure what the point is, outside of preventing any access if users travel outside the country.

I can't believe how slow they were to reach an agreement with someone that would sell the IPhone in China. It looks like Apple can afford to waste large amounts of money just for being lazy about signing a deal. How is China Unicom? They don't even have a decent web site.

Make a bunch of factories over there, get plenty of cheap labor to make the products, then have them ship it over here, only to package it and sell it back to them at full subsidized retail value.

Now, that's capitalism, baby!

Seriously. A faster deal/contract is not a better deal/contract. A company like Apple has to be careful about these types of contracts. It's quite a bit different than dealing with AT&T or O2 or Orange. Apple basically just signed a contract with the People's Republic of China, not just some telcom!

Really only a three year deal, ugh why does there have to be a deal at all?

So is that company the AT&T of the USA? hmm dont think any other network be worse then AT&T.

And I don't think the iphone in china is a big deal, for one they way better phones that do so much more then phones in the US does.

would it have MMS and tethering?

I'm sure there are iphones floating around over there...

well, it IS china... shouldn't that read:

"communication" and "information."

or at least they get a tiny, tiny subset of the internet. that should be enough for them. thanks apple.

Finally...

I was about to say the same thing. You beat me to it. With the ~10 previous threads on speculation of a China iPhone deal, I think everyone has pretty much already discussed everything.

It will be interesting now to see how many iPhones are sold in China and how the government decides to regulate the iPhone (this could be a regretful hell for Apple with the App store. How can you possibly censor all ~1 billion 3rd party Apps?)

Does anyone else feel bad for the Chinese people? They're kept in the dark regarding all current events and fed blanket lies regarding their government.

They don't get WiFi because the networks their phones might join aren't guaranteed secure against anti-government news / information and their choices are curtailed in an attempt to keep them in the dark . (not that they're apprised of their situation to begin with).

I wish more than anything that there was a way for Apple or some other independent organization / group to enlighten the people.... Facts only, no opinion.

My most vivid memory is of an extremely affluent Chinese girl who went on spring break with us to ************ who surfed the net on my laptop and read about what really happened in Tienanmen Square... I found her crying on the stoop outside our hotel room....

The people deserve a chance to learn the truth, regardless of whether or not they decide to believe it.

.........
I don't know how I really feel, but it seems like those companies who work so hard to enter the market of a country who's people are so carefully lied to has no care for the people themselves, only about net profits... God I wish we as a people were more than we appear to be...... It seems we are not.

According to one of their press releases, they are going to sell their CDMA business. Their 3G network is WCDMA, not TD.SCDMA.
