Ars Technica reports (http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/08/sources-current-ipods-discontinued-hinting-at-refresh.ars) that Apple resellers are currently reporting low stocks of most iPod models, and no additional shipments of the existing models are reported to be available. Additionally, resellers report that the stock-keeping units (SKUs) for all existing models have been classified as discontinued. The current line of iPods is on its last legs, lending more evidence that an iPod refresh is just around the corner. Sources from Apple Authorized Resellers have confirmed to Ars that current stock is dwindling (if not completely gone in some cases) and that no more of the current models are coming in. Additionally, all current SKUs are being discontinued, with no word on when new models may arrive.Apple has been rumored (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/17/apple-media-event-scheduled-for-september-9th-no-tablet-announcement/) to be holding a music-focused media event on Wednesday, September 9th, at which many Apple followers expect the company to introduce new iPod models as it has done at similar September events in previous years.
A number of rumors have pointed to the inclusion of digital cameras (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/27/ipod-touch-nano-and-classic-to-receive-3-2-megapixel-cameras-at-september-media-event/) in the iPod touch, iPod nano, and even the iPod classic lines, but there have been no claims of changes to Apple's diminutive iPod shuffle, which saw a complete design overhaul (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/03/11/apple-releases-smaller-4gb-ipod-shuffle-in-black-and-silver/) in March of this year.

After all the talk of cameras, mics and GPS, that would take everyone by surprise...

This is very interesting and leads to many possibilities with respect to the new product lineups. I've imagined a whole new family of devices myself.
1.
The shuffle is nice and all and I really don't have the negativity that I've seen on line about it. However I do believe Apple screwed up in the sense that the device should have been a USB dongle with separate USB and headphone jack ports. Yea I know a slightly larger device but in the end worth while.
2.
Nano is interesting and I don't see major changes to its physical size, rather I see a major overhaul of its internals. The one external change will be a hybrid click wheel and Touch interface. The Touch interface is needed to support things like the rumored camera. I suspect Apple will try ot keep the software the same across models as much as possible.
3.
The Touch obviously will get a speed up. But for the current device I see modest improvements beyond the camera and GPS. I'm really hoping GPS will be there as that could result in a huge explosion in new apps. Combined with a camera though it provides for many commercial apps.
4.
Classic will morph into a Newton 2 type machine. That is a larger screened device than the current Touch and with far more storage. Imagine a machine with 128 to 256 GB of storage. It might even be optionally available with 3G networking. The goal is to fill the need for a massive storage iPod, provide for a larger screen for enhanced apps and bump the internal specs a bit.
5.
I still think the rumored tablet will be an iPod also. Much bigger of course and with a more generous OS but an ipod none the less.

something must be going on with the Shuffle...was in the ubiquitous WallyWorld yesterday and decided on the fly to pick up an old school shuffle, just cuz it would be handy...not a single one in sight and they usually have way more of those than the new one...

I would wager that if the article revealed that a vein of solid gold half a mile wide had been discovered under the Cupertino campus, there would still be a handful of "negative" reactions.

The discovery of gold under Infinite Loop would be a negative because then Apple would charge $4000/$6000/$8000 for the iPod 14k/20k/22k.

Googlebots and other spiders that crawl the net follow links blindly. They follow all links on pages, including the "Positive" and "Negative" links on front-page stories. Spiders like these account for some such responses. The rest are just dirtbags who hate fun.

A thousand times, this. I still consider the first-gen Shuffle the most thought-out and useful, since it doubles as a USB drive and is its own charge cable.
video and camera in shuffle
Septuple-click to begin taking video! Nontuple-click, hold, and then quadruple click to send to MobileMe!
If they're planning on doing a line-wide revision, I'm really curious as to what will happen to the Classics and the Nanos. The only givens are the video camera and tech updates to the Touch. Nanos are a cash-cow and trendy, but the Classic seems like it has an expiration date; as soon as the Touch gains capacities higher than the Classic (256GB anyone?) and the price drops a bit in Flash memory, I can't see why they'd keep around the Classic. Touch Apps are the direction Apple is headed, not the limited apps that you can use on Touchwheel iPods.

So if I'm walking down the street and my iPhone is in my pocket and I'm holding an LCD screen and keyboard ... wouldn't it be easier to just be holding my iPhone that already has a keyboard and monitor?
(please explain what you mean)
updater: oh wait, I think I get what you are saying. My desk at home and at work would just have a monitor and keyboard, and the entire computer would be my phone that would always be with me. Everywhere I go, they just have a monitor and keyboard? Is that what you mean?
I think hackers would have waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much fun with that. Perhaps, if the monitor was bluetooth broadcast (one-way connection) only, and the keyboard had to plug directly into your phone (think of a headphones jack on your phone), it would be secure.

Whenever you're buying any kind of new technology, you're buying a soon-to-be outdated product.
Even your Late 2008 MacBook Pro was soon-to-be outdated, as a newer model came out only eight months later (or fewer, depending on when you bought).
I guess I should get rid of my Early 2005 PowerBook and my 1st Gen nano (even though they both work perfectly) because they're extremely outdated.

Seriously, why does anyone need a shuffle that holds more music than it has battery life? My 1GB needs recharging long before I run out of new songs.
I still think the USB plug is the best shuffle interface. The first gen shuffle recharges almost anywhere without the need to carry a stupid data cable around with you.
Given that the shuffle is frequently updated independently of the other models I'm surprised the report says all SKUs are discontinued. Nobody was expecting anything so maybe it's just a color change.
I am looking forward to getting a 3rd generation touch on Sept. 9th.

Here's my latest "three-day wild guess" (if you're old enough to remember Rush Limbaugh's radio stint at KFBK in the 1980's you might just remember what I mean by that! :) ) on what the new iPod models are:
iPod shuffle
No changes in models--shuffles usually do their "hardware refresh" in the early spring.
iPod nano
New model that looks externally almost like the current model, but will sport a 16:10 display, click wheel moved to the bottom of the case, and now incorporate a 3.2 megapixel camera. Due to circuitry needed for camera functions, storage capacities will stay at 8 GB and 16 GB flash memory. On-screen menus will almost be the same but will add camera functionality and functionality necessary for the "Cocktail" album liner note system.
iPod classic
New model that uses the same basic case design as current "6.5G" 120 GB classic, but sports a new 16:10 aspect display, smaller click wheel to accommodate larger display, new 3.2 GB still-image camera and the same on-screen menu as the new iPod nano (including "Cocktail" album liner note system compatibility). Storage capacity may stay with 120 GB hard drive, though it's possible we may see a 160 GB single-platter hard drive or a 128 GB SSD (if Apple can get a large-volume discount on 128 GB SSDs).
iPod touch
New model, essentially an iPhone 3Gs minus the cellphone functionality, but with 3.2 megapixel camera sensor. Will get iPhone 3.1 software, including full "Cocktail" album liner note system functionality. Storage capacities will be 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB flash memory.

The camera in a itouch is a compelling feature. Although I have the 32GB iPhone 3GS, I still want more and i know the iTouch will be running even faster than the iPhone does.
If the Classic is 160GB with camera I'm going to adopt that as well. But not a 120. I have a 160 already. Another with a camera would be great. :)
Anyone know where Quicktime preferences went in Snow Leopard?

They could replace the mini with a touch mini, while keeping the normal size iPod Touch. I think the whole iPod line, except the shuffle, will eventually have touchscreens that take up most of the front of the device.

Do you know what would be cool? I own one those Citizen Ecodrive watches that have the solar panel on the watch face that absorbs the light to constantly keep the battery charged. The instruction manual says I can keep it in constant darkness for 6 months and it will still tell time! I'd love to see a strip behind the black glass at the top of an iPod Touch (!!! ;)) that could help maintain battery life by using that same technology. I'm not asking to totally go w/out the battery, but use that strip -- which would be virtually naked to the human eye (unless you look at it super close) -- in the iPod Touch to extend battery life.

And a sapphire class on top of one of these nice amoled displays :-)

Um, Master Chief? The Corps has no "soldiers"... and they don't need to rely on an iPod. They still teach how to use things called "maps" and a "compass"...
Right. But what if I tell you that I used "soldiers" instead of Marines without being disrespectful to the USMC? Just use your imagination, as I am not going to help you with it.
Also; Marines don't even need a map or compass! Neither do I.

And the classic is going to support the behemoth of innovation known as the LaserDisc...
http://neilkoster.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/laserdisc1.jpg
Don't even joke. I know a guy who would SQUEE! over a iWhatever that plays laserdiscs, his Stack o'Platters having no working player the last I heard. Don't start with "just get the DVD" -- if you value your discretionary time, you will not get into a discussion with this guy about the Superiority of the Laserdisc Format. Don't do it.

Hah...
I've never watched a movie on LaserDisc, but I wouldn't be surprised if they output higher quality video than DVDs. Bigger disc = more info, more info = better quality.
But the ridiculousness of the LaserDisc comes in the size. One LaserDisc case probably takes up the same amount of space as four DVD cases. And while the quality is better, I'm sure it's not that much better.

Replacing the iPod? That would be a poor move, anything that gets bigger than the iPod touch (i.e. won't fit in your pocket) will kill them in the portable player market. Tablets are a very different market.

I think that is where the market is going towards devices like the iPod Touch which I consider a media tablet. Sales for the iPods are down while sales for the Touch are up. The app store is a huge success. Why wouldn't Apple want to capitalize on this?
Anything with a screen size in between 3"-5" I would say is pocketable and usable. Apple could easily make 2-3 devices in that range. The Touch now is has a 3.5" screen size the device itself could be made smaller with the home button on the side. A 4"+ screen could fit the device as it is now.

Tell you what, walk up to a group of Marines and ask them how they feel about being referred to as soldiers. You'll get a much more vibrant, personal user experience that way.
And yes, I imagine there might be some things you could find without a map and compass... Best of luck to you!
Now, back to speculation on what new toy there might be to purchase... oh dear oh dear..

What will happen....
Every iPod will receive a super reflective glossy screen, but apple will innovate it a little further, every time you look into it, you see your reflection as Steve Jobs , will fall in love with your self and the product so much, that you will happily pay an increase of 20% for any Apple product in New Zealand :D:D:D while the rest of the world receives a price drop :(:(:(:(

8gb shuffle anyone?
Nope. shuffle lives by its name. you dont need a ton of storage
video and camera in shuffle
and how will that work? As said above the shuffle lives up to its name. Its a music only player. nothing more.
Discontinued?! NO MORE IPODS?! :eek::mad::confused:
Blu-ray support in the iPod shuffle is imminent.
no more "last years" ipods ;)
and how will you get the disc in? let alone a screen thats worth watching a movie on?
How about an all-new line of aluminum uni-body iPods?
..
I'd love to see an unibody ipod Touch, sliver and black like the nano
As of this writing, there are 2 "negative" responses to this news article. I wonder just WHO might find this announcement "negative." SanDiskers, perhaps? Microsofties? Hmmm.
I would wager that if the article revealed that a vein of solid gold half a mile wide had been discovered under the Cupertino campus, there would still be a handful of "negative" reactions.
Indeed, the Trolls live and thrive here on MacRumors.
Its mostly kids. They see "ipods being discountued and they screm "OMG no more ipods, what will I listen to when Ms applebee talks about history with that large pimple on her nose! ahhh i need to talk to my bff jill"
I think Apple could replace the nano with an iPod Touch Nano. I'd like to see a tiny clip on wireless remote control for easier access to music functions.

erm no. Wont happen. Sorry.
On-screen menus will almost be the same but will add camera functionality and functionality necessary for the "Cocktail" album liner note system.
why 16:10? 16:9 is best for movies.
iPod classic
New model that uses the same basic case design as current "6.5G" 120 GB classic, but sports a new 16:10 aspect display, smaller click wheel to accommodate larger display, new 3.2 GB still-image camera and the same on-screen menu as the new iPod nano (including "Cocktail" album liner note system compatibility). Storage capacity may stay with 120 GB hard drive, though it's possible we may see a 160 GB single-platter hard drive or a 128 GB SSD (if Apple can get a large-volume discount on 128 GB SSDs).
Same as before, why 16:10. 16:9 is best for movies. \
and you mean 3.2 MP, not MB,
The camera in a itouch is a compelling feature. Although I have the 32GB iPhone 3GS, I still want more and i know the iTouch will be running even faster than the iPhone does.

this is like the 3rd year they have done it. the only difference is that previously they did the laptop refresh after the promo was over and this year they did it in June. which is actually a better time for it.
unless apple does not refresh the laptops again, when was the 32nm Intel CPUs to be available, i heard it is september!
I am more looking forward to iMac refreshes with some new intel CPUs.
if apple can release $149 iPod touch (8GB) will be awesome (still keep one or two iPod nano models)

The reason why I mentioned going to a 16:10 display is fact a it may be easier to make a 16:10 display as opposed to a 16:9 display. A 16:10 display may (in my opinion!) allow for more information to be displayed when you see the display in portrait mode.

iPod Shuffle - same
iPod Nano - 16GB $139 32GB $179
iPod Classic - 160GB (if they can) $199
iPod Touch - 16GB $199 32GB $299 64GB $399

16:9, while in portrait mode you'll gain more space at the top/bottom, but loose at the left and right
it would be smart to do 16:9 if they really want to push movies on the device. It could elemate the black bars

16:9 is HD television widescreen, movies are wider and will still have letterboxing on a 16:9 display. 16:9 is 1.78:1, and most movies are 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 - significantly wider.

Pure speculation on my part, no friends of friends, or sisters cousins uncles work for Apple, and nothing found siting in an elevator, but here is my take...
Aside from a boost in storage and hopefully a drop in price (or no price change if other specs are added).
The iPod touch will see:
Camera
GPS
Digital compass
and Augmented reality for the masses
The iPod Nano and iPod Classics will see:
no Camera
no GPS
no Digital compass
very little change in physical design
The iPod shuffle will see:
a return to the physical controls on the device itself

The current touch has a 3.5" (diagonal) screen and is 4.1" tall (or long, depends on how you're using it).
At current specs, a touch device with a 5.0" (diagonal) screen would have to be 5.75" x 3.35".

All I can say; if they only thing they do is make 3.x standard on iPod Touch and increase the storage capacity to 64GB (or maybe even 128GB but I'd doubt it would happen), I would be a very happy man. I just hope that there is an increase to 64GB because right now 32GB is absolutely pathetic. Come on, some of us have more than a couple of cd's in our collection.

Newest iPod Touch wiill have a samsung 30" LCD screen with multi-touch gestures and official support for PC Hackintosh Snow Leopard installs.
It will also run Newton OS out of the box and cook pizza with its battery in under 8 minutes.
iPod Shuffle becomes a new form of plastic explosive that's capable of demolishing even the most rugged composit jewelery safe resulting in a 10x increase in retail jewelery theft.
the iPhone remains unchanged, but the Classic iPod becomes a clay putty based amorphous blob audio device where you insert your CD's Cassette and 8track media and it assimilates them as easily as the South Park trapper-keeper while slowly evolving into a sentient life form bent on human destruction.
............ Or maybe they include a camera, higher pixel density screen & more touch sensitive devices........... your best guess is as good as mine :-P

At this stage of development, OLEDs different color pixel elements degrade at widely different rates - the screens eventually become tinted blue/green.
