Want to jailbreak to use Backgrounder. Seems there is a lengthy lag in being able to upgrade to the latest OS if you want to continue being jailbroken. Does anyone know when 3.1 will be available? If it's in the near, should I jailbreak now or wait until 3.1 is out?

Thanks...

If you wait for 3.1, you will have to wait a while after that for the Jailbreak. It is very unusual that a new version of the OS can be jailbroken at release. Often it is months. You can always jailbreak now and then re-jailbreak (and install 3.1) when the 3.1 jailbreak is finally released. But this will mean waiting a while for 3.1.

If you decide to upgrade to 3.1 and have not yet captured your iBEC and iBSS, you must capture them first. The iPhone Dev-Team says that these files will soon be required for unlocking your phone, and it is not possible to extract them after upgrading to 3.1. There are good guides to capturing the iBEC and iBSS files at iclarified.com, for both Mac (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4400) and Windows (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4399).

The ability to jailbreak is normally available within a couple of weeks.

It's the unlock that takes a while longer normally

That iBEC and iBSS stuff.. Is that only for unlocking the phone.

I only want to jailbreak again after 3.1 so will I not need to worry about that?

No, those are for jailbreaking.
And the dev team said as long as you have those files you will always be able to jailbreak your 3GS.
Jailbreak tools are usually released within the first week sometimes a little longer depending if you're using Mac or PC.

Jailbreaking gives you the unofficial apps. Unlocking lets you take your iPhone to other carriers that use GSM
