Cracked glass on iPhone 3GS (this isn't another one of THOSE threads)

So, I dropped my iPhone on the floor in my dorm room today, and the screen cracked.

The AT&T store just off campus wants me to pay full price for a replacement.

The nearest Apple store is about 50 minutes away. Now, here's my question:

On my phone, the glass part of the screen extends just past the chrome bezel if you look at it from the side. Could this possibly be considered a defect in my phone? On my 2G, it was perfectly flush. I think that if it was flush with the bezel then it might not have broken... ?

And what is Apple charging these days to fix broken screens, if they don't consider this a defect? (I would just go there... but it's 50 minutes away).

They're not going to buy that. They'll say it's the result of the drop, seeing as your screen is cracked.

Apple charges $199 for the screen replacement. They most likely wouldn't consider that a 'defect' unless you got a really nice genius, because they'd probably blame the bezel problem on the drop that cracked the screen.

I'm not trying to commit fraud. The glass on my screen has been sticking out past the bezel on my phone since it came out of the box. I didn't think that it would ever be a problem. The reason I posted this thread was to see if other people noticed the same thing on their phones, or if it was just a defect on my phone.

Because the glass is cracked, it doesn't matter that there may have been any other defect anymore. The problem is that the glass is cracked and all problems will now be blamed on that because there is no proof otherwise now.
