Been using Macrumors for years but only stumbled on this forum today because of the August thread ...
I was blown away by your pictures, and was going to post a picture from my July/August US trip when I realised I was sitting on the September side of the International Date Line, so here goes ...

My lab, Charlie stuck his head around my driver's seat right after I got in my car.. I had one shot left on the SD card in my D50, so with the little Nikkor 50mm 1.8, I grabbed this shot. I was a bit close with the 75mm equivalent focal length, but really like the lens on the DX sensor format. This little lens will be a constant companion now...

I can definitely see why. Great pic!
I posted a landscape pic of Angel Falls in last month's thread, and now I'll post a portrait version. I love my new 10-20mm!

Wow! dllavaneras and phrasiklea, two amazing scenic shots! I think Legends of the Fall was filmed mostly in Montana, BTW. I must say, though, Slovenia is just a beautiful place as is Venezuela.

Sometimes, when I'm just messing around with my MacBook or want to chill or unwind (like right now) I get a cup of tea and look at the "Photo of the Day" thread. All of these shots are so beautiful and so different. It's like sitting down with a gorgeous coffee table book of the world... only much better.
Thanks all for sharing your work with the rest of us.

I think this was the most comfortable sunrise I have ever witnessed. This was the view from the back of our camper so I set my tripod up, and sat in bed and shot away!
I really liked the purple in the sky on this particular morning after the stars were no longer visible. This purple haze only lasted 2 or 3 minutes before the colors of sun over powered it. Glad I caught it when I did. It was taken about 10 minutes after this shot (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tonysphotographs/3853915481/sizes/o/) which is one of my favs from the whole trip!
I had to do some mild photoshopping to remove a car that decided to park right in front of my tripod.

A thumbs-up from me too: a very calming and traditional image... like a sigh of contentment. If we're looking for film references, maybe The Sound of Music (even though I've never seen the film)?

Very effective too, in conveying a mood. Someone said the pic looks very "religious". Well, it doesn't reflect any of my religious feelings; to me it says 'Hammer horror'...

I've been contrasting this mild telephoto (75mm equivalent) Nikkor 50mm with a recently aquired Tokina 12-24 f/4. So, I spent about an hour a couple of days ago down around one of the local fishing docks in Newport shooting with both lenses. They seem to compliment each other well... so I'll post some of the wide-angle shots in the days to come, but for now, here's one with the nifty-fifty...

Are you asking if you've ever seen the film... well, there was that question mark, and all... ;) Actually, I haven't seen the film either ( <nudge, nudge...>) but I think you're right. Phrasiklea's shot could have come right from Sound of Music. I can just see Julie Andrews trilling as she dances across that field...

Not what you're thinking... ;)
Lovely light on your pic of the boats in the dock, though I'd maybe prefer more sky and less foreground water (ie the reflections of the masts aren't 'solid' enough to be a part of the composition... if that makes any sense...).

Thanks for the comments. The Sound of Music might be a closer comparison, since that movie was shot just north of here, in Bavaria. And yes, I think a number of my recent shots are rather "traditional" in flavor, as you say, Doylem. Seems to be my mood lately...something in the air around here...;)

Another lovely Slovenian landscape. I like the telephoto compression you got with that 100mm lens, and the tonal difference in the closer area compared to the mountain background which gives nice separation and depth.
BTW, Is that an airplane in the lower right part of the picture banking behind the hill...?
Doylem, thanks for the feedback on the boats... it's always good to catch a suggestion from you, and the grammar lesson for f(r)ee. But, how do you know what I was thinking about that dog? ;) Maybe it wasn't what you were thinking.. :D

Too late now. I'll never be able to look at the pic again. The expression on the dog's face I naturally took as admiration of the photographer's skills; now I see the expression as 'dog having a crap'... :(

Thanks, pdxflint. :) Yes, it's an airplane, but a remote-controlled one, operated by a kid standing in the foreground shadow. Looked like he was having a great time with it.

Zion National Park has to be one of my favorites. It's incredibly diverse as a park with lots of great hiking, amazing views, and perfect places to relax.
The hikes however are one of the main reasons it is my favorites. From Angels Landing, to Hidden Canyon to hiking the Narrows, you are spoiled for choices. This photo was taken after a great hike through Hidden Canyon and we were walking back towards the park entrance when you come to a bridge near the cross roads for the famous tunnel. After a short walk you get a great view up the Virgin River.
One of the most fascinating facts about Zion at the other amazing parks in the "Grand Staircase" area is that the top layer of rock in the grand canyon is the same as the bottom layer in Zion. The top layer of rock in Zion is the same as the bottom layer of Rock in Bryce Canyon...
This was shot with my Canon 5D mark II, Tokina 12-24mm F/4 (17mm is as wide as it will go on a full frame) and a 0.9 Graduated ND filter. It was edited in Lightroom 2 just to change the white balance from the RAW image

Another shot from a few days ago down at the northside fishing docks in Newport, OR. I was getting familiar with two new lenses, the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 and the Tokina 12-24 f/4. This was shot with the Tokina at 12mm. One good thing about this DX lens is that it is usable with FX format cameras from 17mm to 24mm, making it a good wide-angle lens for both DX and FX.

It's best if you first have your photo hosted somewhere online. Then when you make your post to this thread, click on the little yellow icon in the reply box that looks like a snapshot of a mountain and sun. Paste the URL of your photo in the dialogue box that will appear. If you uploaded it online full-size, then edit the "IMG" tags to read "TIMG" instead; this will make a reduced version appear in the thread here.
Oh, and welcome to the daily thread! :)

Trying it from an artist's perspective (hope this helps)
As things fade into the distance, they become less detailed and even blur together if far enough away from the viewer. This is perspective, and makes all the difference between a square, with a triangle on top with a window, door, and stick-figure family (all smiling of course); and an intricately sketched capitol building replete with gorgeous and believable detail.
What happened in this picture was that you skewed perspective by making the background a uniform blur. Once this is done, the car looks much more 2-D than it would otherwise if you had let the lens handle the Depth of Field.
Try this...take the same picture with your lens wide open. Depending on the lens you are shooting with, there is an excellent chance that the blur will be taken care of for you.
Hope it helps....mcavjame is an amazing photographer and this, I believe is what he/she is trying to say...
Love the experimentation...playing in the sandbox is the only way to learn IMO.
Ok, i understand what you are saying now, but i guess i have to wait until i develop a better eye, because i still dont see the car as 2D.
I retried the shot, but still cant get the lens to do the appropriate blur, or any for that matter. I set it to wide open, but still cant get it. Is it because im shooting in mode 'P' and not 'M'? I assume the lens is capable, its the kit lens that came with my XTi. Also, i just learned that even in 'P' mode i can(have to) set the shutter speed. This i did not know. I thought would help me get some kind of blur going, but to no avail.
I agree mcavjame is a great photographer. I assure you his words did not fall on deaf ears. I have been slowly leaning, and teaching myself all that i can. I will have a little help now as im in Photography 101 here at the local university, but i could only get into the online course, and still have to figure out a lot on my own.
Maxx I really appreciate all the help you have given me, as well as the others here. I realized that i have basically using my DSLR as a point an shoot, and that bothers me. I want to be the one making the decisions, and know how to make them well, not the camera.

I'll bet this location would make for some interesting evening shots, given that the light would be shining right on the bench. Might want to coerce a friend into sitting there as a model for you.
Another shot of "The Island" at Wakami.
I love the light in this one. Composition wise the sea level is too centered and the leaf at the bottom right is distracting, you might want to consider a slightly different crop (cut off the bottom and right). I take it you were shooting hand held at 1/20s, it shows as the island is not sharp. No need for ISO100 here as with ISO200 you'd get 1/40s which would make hand holding at 52mm just barely possible, but ideally you'd need either shake reduction or a tripod.
But otherwise a great catch, did you wait for the light to hit the island or was it just luck?

I could be wrong, but I believe that the bird is a Northern Goshawk. I primarily use two lenses for wildlife with a Canon 40D: EF 200mm f/2.8L USM, and EF 400mm f/5.6L. For the photo above I used the EF 400mm f/5.6L USM (no IS). Since there is plenty of daylight in Alaska (during the summer, of course), the 400 prime does well for me. For example, it was around 7:30PM when I took the photos of the hawk. While IS would be the best, I take my chances with non-IS lenses and save a lot of cash. Canon primes offer outstanding IQ, even the ones without IS.
-The camera was set to Av (aperture priority)
-f/5.6
-160 ISO
-Shutter: 1/1000 sec.
-Ai-Servo
-Burst mode
I use the 200 prime for shots of ducks nearby (at parks, etc.), for large game such as moose and caribou within perhaps 150 yards, and even for close-ups of flowers or large insects with the aid of a Kenko tube.
Depending on the moment while taking photos of this and other hawks, a 70-200 f/4L would have been perfect. Sometimes the 200 and the 400 are too long, while some other times they are perfect. Hawks in this area get as close as 20 feet from me, making the 200 and 400 too long :D But keep in mind that this hawk is hunting, specially when I move around and scare small birds and rodents out of hiding. In this case the hawk gets real close, but most times (in other situations) it's too far for even the 400.

Thanks, I really appreciate you taking the time to offer up a lot of really helpful information. I have a couple of lenses coming my way, both of them previous generation glass, but really good glass, the Nikkor 300 f/4.0 AF-D and the Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8 AF-D. Neither are AF-S lenses (built-in motor) but the optics are excellent. I'll be using them on DX format for the extra reach, mainly for wildlife shots, but also when I take the plunge to FX they'll work with either. Anyway, it was great to know how well this focal length range works for you. I imagine you get quite the reach with the 400 on the crop sensor body, and I might have to look at adding a 1.4x or 1.7x converter for the 300mm. Thanks again.

Nice shot, though the light could be better. Wherever did you find him? And how close were you?
Thanks. It's taken in the Glenealo Valley, Glendalough, County Wicklow, Ireland. The goats are easy to find and - unlike the herd of deer that also lives in the valley - don't shy away from humans, mainly because you'd have to make quite an effort to get to them on the crags and rocks they hang out on. Photo was taken from about 100m distance with a Nikon 70-300mm at 300mm. It's quite heavily cropped.

Truly perfect. Well, maybe I'd be tempted to frame it more tightly and then clone out whatever bit of the upper lamp intruded at the top of the frame. At any rate, you obviously have as much luck conjuring up the perfect femme fatale as you do with with the perfect sheep.

There's an (unspoken?) constraint on the Photo of the Day thread that only one photo can be posted...and for the life of me I cannot figure why this would be. (Holdover from the days when memory was more expensive maybe?)
My question is this....is it possible to change the format of this thread, the one that gets (by far) the most hits in a given month, in such a way that it would have more value added to this community? What if it were "Photos of the Day" or "C&C for the day" or something like that.
Thoughts?

I don't see why something so successful needs fixing. I'm in favor of the "one per day" rule for a couple of reasons. For one, it forces people to be critical in their selections. Secondly, it keeps the "pace" of the thread reasonably slow, advancing a page per day at most, and allowing people the chance to engage with other. With fast-moving threads, like big news items on the main MR page, comments tend to get lost in the abyss.
We have a C&C thread now, the "challenge" thread, and multiple postings are allowed in that one. If someone wants feedback on a whole batch of photos, they can start a separate thread for the purpose; lots of folks do this, and they always get lots of feedback.
So I think things are working pretty well as they are.

The hawk made my day a couple of evenings, not only because I allowed me to take a few shots, but also because I could sense its wildness (for better words) when it would stare straight at my eyes. it was completely unafraid, but not over-friendly. I just kept at a distance taking pictures while I talked to it. It's an incredible feeling that is hard to explain.

Are you just saying you'd like a "no daily limit" to submissions...? That would be a totally different style of thread/topic. No point in labeling it anything "of the day" when there would be no limits... and someone would probably just start the next "Photo of the Day" thread elsewhere if this one were changed. It's sort of become a tradition here, and if you look at the archives (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=580184) you'll see where it all began - a single thread that went on for months, until it was broken up into individual month thread just to keep it sane... now, just about the time it's getting too big to read the whole thing, a new one starts, which works well.
Why don't you start a new thread and write the rules for submission. There have been several other types of threads in the past, including a photo criticism thread which actually started out pretty well, but died out after a few months. A good dialogue actually existed for a bit, and it was an opportunity for decent constructive criticism, and they're still interesting reading (apart from some now-missing images...) Here's the links: Photo Critique (February 2008) (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=427675) and Photo Critique (March 2008) (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=446469)

My though is that limiting this to one photo per day per participant gives this thread a nice eclectic mix of photos to look at without having to burden people with 20 photos of their pet dog (for example). If someone has a whole series that they want to share at a time, then there's nothing to stop them from creating a new thread. The photography section here doesn't revolve around this one single thread, after all.
I'm liking the way this thread currently works.

I have no idea what bird this is. All I know is that these birds seldom stand still, and move very fast. This time one posed for me, and I snapped a burst of 12 shots before it left :) The bright background is a birch tree branch. The leaves have already changed from green to yellow and orange colors. Hawks often try to make a meal out of these little birds.

For those who chimed in thanks...I think Phrasekleia made a good point on the speed of the thread..and how it would simply be faster than it is now with the added photos (tho my experience is that it is too fast...but then again I do not get a chance to post often). Not looking for another C&C thread (or to start another thread at that). But do still wonder if this is the best way to go about doing this...hence the original question. So once again thanks for the thoughts, there were some pretty good points made.
Re-cropped and lightened up a bit on some good advice I got. Hope it works better:

I just bought my first additional lens for my camera. The camera is a Rebel XTi, and the new lens is the 50 mm 1.8. I was playing around with it on the weekend and this shot was one of my favorites.
I'm still learning what I can do with this little 50.
I have the same camera and lens. You're going to have a lot of fun with that.

MUCH better :D :D :D
Is there any way you can recompose the picture to take the subject out of the center? Would love to see what you come up with if anything...
Unfortunately The lil guy was gone when i got back home. My gf was already running late for work, and she yelled at me for stopping to take that pic. I suppose i could try to cropping it...
Thoughts?
I agree, i hate waiting a week to see a whole 'series' if you will. I think the thread can stay the same, but what if we up the max to 3 a day??
I don't see why something so successful needs fixing.{...}
I wouldnt say fixing per say, but i think it might need a little evolution......

I think you misread that. I hardly ever have one quality pic to post, let alone a series, but i notice a few other people will say its one of a series. i dont always get back to check out the thread, so thats why i had said that. plus, i honestly dont see how 3 images would diminish the integrity, or even the fluidity of this thread....

Ah... [ ;) ]... Yes, I'll never complain about UK weather (well, OK, maybe now... 'cos it's been raining solidly for about 10 days...). The light can be wonderful... generally just before rain... or just after (so it's never far away... :)).
I suppose nobody ever said life was fair, but I'm inclined to pout anyway: still no clouds in sight here.

I really enjoy seeing a symmetrical composition that works. I think the key is to have something that offsets the symmetry, which in this case would be the plant at the left and the differing embellishment of the columns. The light is also quite lovely, aside from the discoloration introduced by the pane of glass--pity about that (perhaps a CPL would have helped?). By the way, the photo is not quite straight.
Once again, the journey is the destination:

It's usually a good rule of thumb that if you have to explain an image with words, then you have failed as a photographer. In that sense, this image is full of fail. Having said that, I'll try to explain why I still like this shot.
Bar 89 is a restaurant in NYC that has decent food and a great "feel." One interesting thing about the place is the bathrooms. They have see through doors. It's a bit disconcerting the first time you need to use them. The cool factor (gimmick?) is that when you lock the door behind you, the glass immediately fills with smoke that makes it so you can't see inside. It's a very disconcerting experience. Going to the bathroom is generally considered a very private thing. The first time you use the head here (assuming you haven't been warned) invokes some discomfort.
This shot shows some empty stalls on the left (where you can clearly see into the bathroom) and some occupied stalls on the right (where the smoke has occluded the occupants).
Again, the image doesn't stand on its own since it requires too much explanation. But I like it nonetheless.

I would recompose or crop so that the tree and car are not in the picture. Is there an angle or background that would make the lighthouse more interesting? You have a nice color palette to work from here...

hmmm interesting. however:
1) crop out the car. Take out much of the tree if possible. perhaps retake the shoot
2) more lighting on that subject is needed. too dark, underexposed. PP can help with this to bring out more detail
3) try a different angle. Get closer, lay on your back, shoot up at an angle. I think that would be an interesting take.
4) composition wise, make the windows more centered. it's like you were slightly to the left of the subject

And if you dont mind, i would like a copy of the original to run through Topaz adjust, just to see. :)
