Hello,
I am a graphic design/CS student on a shoestring budget. I am currently looking for a new webhost. I've been very satisfied with my current one; however recently they had to begin placing google ads on the pages in response to a bunch of TOS violations and people abusing the server with bad content. I think it really stinks that a bunch of perverts have to mess things up for the rest of us...
Please recommend your favorite free hosting service. The only features I really, really need are subdomain hosting, FTP access, and most importantly, NO ADVERTISING. Small linkbacks on the bottom of each page are totally okay, however. That's what my previous host used; I found it to be a great arrangement.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions
Regards,
Britt

what do you mean by subdomain hosting? do you have your own domain and want to be able to create your own subdomains or do you want a subdomain of the host's domain?

I meant that I would prefer a subdomain of the host's name, rather than a www.hostname.com/me type of url. However, as long as there aren't any ads, I wouldn't mind much if it was the latter type of url.

Are you on commission? ;) I don't use them myself but the reports haven't been entirely glowing about their services.
I know it's not free, but there are a number of places that provide very reasonably priced accounts that are reliable, no adverts etc. I'd go for Pair Networks myself - $5.99/month (or $3.76/mth when prepaid) for their lowest account should give you what you need.

I can host you for free. Read this (http://www.ambitiouslemon.com/myoffer.php) and let me know what you think. You can IM me any questions or PM me through the forums.

Thanks to everybody for their recommendations--your help is greatly appreciated. I've found a new web home at ambitiouslemon.com and can't wait to get my stuff up there. :)

I was going to sign on with them until I read that (good thing I make it a habit to read all my TOS and user licenses...tiring but often necessary) and I couldn't believe it. Files larger than 1mb...I can forget hosting any programs that I've developed. No audio or video? They've got to be kidding! My brother and I often dink around in Garageband and we want to make our music available. As a graphic developer I've done some quick-time movies I'd like to make available, too. Photo albums? most of my website is devoted to events photos and my portfolio! This is probably a great, fast host for people whose pages are more text/informational based. But it's definitely not right for my needs--this site is my shoutbox, and a lot of my messages are contained in graphical and auditory media.

re HostUltra: it took them a week to get around to registering my domain name, and their support forums have a lot of similar stories. i'd recommend spending your money elsewhere. thankfully i only signed up for their one-month cheapie hosting plan in order to check them out, so it only cost me $5.
edit: just re-read their terms, though, and most of the restrictions mentioned in the posts above only apply to their free hosting plan; their paid stuff isn't as restrictive. but my warning about poor service still stands.

Yes, I was interested in signing with them (Read a review on some freehosting review site...) and I had the same phenomena in both IE and Safari.

I know it isnt free, but for a very small fee you can get vizaweb hosting. I use them and have had no trouble at all. If I have a problem, they always answer emails within about 24 hours or less. They offer just about any service you could need too (mySQL, frontpage extentions, php, and fantastico as well as cpanel, and a lot more). Check out their site, they've got really cheap hosting plans. http://vizaweb.com
