Has AT&T ever said specifically what is different about the iPhone sending MMS versus another "basic" phone? AT&T keeps saying their towers aren't ready for MMS but almost every other phone on their network can do it. If there is something different about a picture message coming from an iPhone then I understand, but if not then AT&T needs to explain the delay.

Awe hell....I think it's been mentioned in one of the thousand threads on it. I dunno the difference though. I wonder what they'd say if I tried to cancel using the "You lied to me" thing.

Idk, why dont you ask them?
Or, you know, wait until September 22nd. Then complain.
At&t doesnt have to "explain" s*** to you.

AT&T doesn't have to upgrade the towers to get MMS to work on the iPhone... they need to remove the special block that disabled the iPhone from sending and receiving regular MMS messages and forward it to the viewmymessage site.

I heard that the "block" they put on the iPhone is an account-by-account basis, so they have to go in and manually remove it from all accounts. That must be why they weren't ready for WWDC. How many iPhone 3Gs are currently being used in the US?

AT&T has hinted a new version of the iPhone OS will ship later this month, iPhone Software 3.1.
The new software is likely to deliver on some of the promises made to AT&T users when iPhone 3.0 shipped, specifically MMS messaging (at last) and the capacity to engage in Bluetooth file transfers.
iPhone 3.1 will also likely offer support for any of those features we’ve been hearing so much rumour and speculation about, such as social networking of iTunes songs played, potentially a subscription-based streaming music service and more.
We also predict the software update will be made available for iPod touch users (yes, that’s pure speculation, but let’s face it, it’s the least likely unlikely you’ve ever seen this side of a specious double-negative).
