Am I missing something or is the spreadsheet very limited? On my netBook I can shade cells with ease as well as have a sheet with more than 40 columns. I find this very handy for keeping a register of lessons paid for etc. as well as lesson content etc. (I am a private piano/keyboard teacher).
Thanks

You're not missing anything. Appleworks is in *dire* need of an update. It has remained virtually unchanged for many, many years. It is fine for light-weight projects, but if you need to do something complex, I'd recommend using a different program.
(I can't find some for you right now, but hopefully the other people to read this thread will post links to some free spreadsheet software)

i use NeoOffice/J. it's a nicer version of OpenOffice.org for Mac that acts like a regular Mac app. just throw it away to uninstall. this requires X11 though. i use Apple's version, but there are others out there.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/x11/ (download link is to the right, halfway down or so. requires panther. beta version for jaguar is available)
hope that helps
EDIT - this does not require X11. they replaced X11 code with java code. so, everyone should be able to use this.
