Tinker Time

Hi Folders,

Well, I was new to this until just recently but now I am quicly becoming obsessed. I have a question for everyone who has folded a Tinker on a dedicated machine-- how long (in minutes) did it take your cpu to complete one frame on a 400 frame Tinker WU?

This is mostly out of pure curiosity...I'd like to hear what machine you have (or CPU upgrade specs) I'll start!

My PB G4 @1.33 is right around 22 minutes a frame. :)
My B&W G3 @350 is 75-80 minutes a frame. :o

I won't discriminate either (if you have a PC)
I am really curious about G5's if anyone has data on those....

On my PIV PC running Windows 2000, about 3.5 days to process a tinker. Computer used for work 8 hours a day; the other 16 are devoted to folding.

Tinker started just before 3 p.m. on "Day 1" and wrapped up at about 4 a.m. on "Day 4."

I am really curious about G5's if anyone has data on those....
Well, I have an Athlon running at 2.17GHz (17something FSB). It's almost dedicated ;)
On p680, I'm crunching at between (m.ss) 4.50 and 5.20/frame. My Powerbook won't be enlisted until I can find a cooler for the poor thing... 20+ minutes/frame makes me feel queasy.
My P4 at 2.4GHz was crunching at around the same rate, pipeline, SSE2 and all. Thinking a dual Xeon would be nice, cool, and quiet if I can stretch to it. I need a new server, and those things would ... Blaaast off! 4 Work units at once!

I've also just noticed I've been given a 1000 step Gromacs WU -- p736. This crazy mother takes 18 minutes/frame! Bet it takes longer than that tinker, and I get 1/4 of the points :(

2.0Ghz P4/512mb running (p638_L939_K12M_ext) while i was home sleeping.. takes about 4 days total (including when im working and not working).

G5 1.8 takes about 2,5 days for a tinker (400 frames), or 9,5 minutes per frame, same for my P4 2.0 @work. My G3 B&W 400 about 1,5 hours per frame.

my output has been outright killed by these things!

i was usually getting 300 pts a day, and i've got 400 frame beasts on every single processor, now. that's 3 G3s under 400mhz that are trying to handle what it takes my dual 1.8 almost 3 days to do...

Wow. That's quite fast... I'm impressed (although with the G5's, I guess I expected to be). I am impressed with (don't yell at me) that 2.7GHz Athlon that was mentioned, as well. ~5 minutes a frame! Someday I hope I'll be there... <sigh>

Are there any WU's that have a different number of frames, aside from the 400 Tinkers and the 100Gromacs? Someone mentioned a monster that is on one of their machines-- take months to finish. How many of you out there have had to deal with them?

Most Tinkers I get take 55-70 minutes on my G3/800 and about 7 percent longer per frame on my dual G4/800.

I got my first p678 today and it's taking 31 minutes per frame. So, it's relatively speedy and has a high point value, to boot.

You'd probably see a little more speed with extra RAM. I noticed my G3/800 has fewer beachballs now when I switched from 704 MB to 896 MB with folding and my progress monitor running.

My p4 1.3 gets 2 min. 50 seconds per frame on p1407.

Now that I really have a tinker on my P4 machine, I am getting appx. 11.5 minutes per frame.

ya, im getting a 1gb stick from crucial, which will bump it up to 1.5 :cool:

1.5 GB of RAM has been working for me in my dual G4/800 but it gets really close of free RAM some days and I've noticed since 10.3.6 and 10.3.7, virtual memory has been hitting the hard drive much more often.

The TINKER engine should detect that it's running on a non-optimised CPU, and tell the Folding client to avoid work units that could be done by more common PCs in less than half the time. Running TINKER units on a G4 isn't efficient. It's like taking an F-350 to a race track and a Beetle to carry a heavy payload to an off-road site. The G4 is the wrong CPU to process x86-optimized work units.

Nope. Same thing, just a different form of code used to simulate the protein folding process. Or at least that's what I gather it is. From the F@H FAQ...

Most of the critical parts of FAH are publicly available. The Tinker and Gromacs source codes can be downloaded and run. Unlike many computer projects, the paramount concern is not functionality, but the scientific integrity, and posting the source code in a way that would allow people to reverse engineer the code to produce bogus scientific results would make the whole project pointless.

I'm getting tired of these tinkers, too - I recently brought 3 new machines online (1 DP 1.8 G5 and 2 3GHz P4s) and the roller-coaster ride of stats thus far has left me with no clue as to what to expect from them.
