With Apple's "It's Only Rock and Roll" media event (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/31/apple-issues-invitations-for-september-9th-media-event/) scheduled for tomorrow, months of rumors and speculation are coming together to generate a picture of what may be in store for the event.
New iPods with Camera
A report (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/05/15/new-iphone-and-ipod-touch-details-ipod-to-get-camera/) from mid-May was the first to suggest that the iPod touch and iPod nano would see the addition of digital cameras. Additional confirmation and mockup images (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/05/26/artist-rendition-of-5g-ipod-nano-with-camera/) of the next-generation iPod nano appeared shortly thereafter, and the new iPod nano is also rumored to carry a wider-aspect (1.5:1) screen ratio.
Over the past several months, a number (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/07/06/more-evidence-of-cameras-in-next-gen-ipod-touch-and-nano/) of third-party case manufacturers (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/07/23/more-purported-next-generation-ipod-touch-and-ipod-nano-cases-surface/) have been advertising (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/09/04/new-gallery-of-cases-for-next-generation-ipod-touch-and-ipod-nano-posted/) cases for the next-generation iPod touch and iPod nano designed to accommodate digital cameras on both models, as well as the new iPod nano screen size. Believable images (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/14/images-of-next-generation-ipod-touch-surface/) claiming to be a prototype of the new iPod touch were also revealed last month:
http://images.macrumors.com/article/2009/08/14/165138-third_gen_touch_2a_500.jpg
Additional word (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/27/ipod-touch-nano-and-classic-to-receive-3-2-megapixel-cameras-at-september-media-event/) appeared late last month that Apple has contracted for 3.2-megapixel cameras for not only the iPod touch and iPod nano, but also the iPod classic. Finally, iPod resellers have also reported dwindling stocks (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/28/apple-resellers-report-ipod-stocks-dwindling-all-skus-being-discontinued/) of existing iPod models and discontinuation of product codes for those models.
Last minute reports (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/09/07/its-only-rock-and-roll-banner-and-last-minute-ipod-production-problems/) from multiple sources claim, however, that Apple has run into production problems with the cameras on the new models. While the issue may delay shipment of the new iPods, an introduction remains very likely for tomorrow's event.
iTunes Store - "Cocktail" and Pre-Cut Ringtones?
Apple has been rumored (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/07/27/apple-and-record-labels-to-bundle-interactive-booklets-with-music-downloads/) to be developing "digital album" packages of interactive content, code-named "Cocktail", that the music industry hopes will help spur sales of full albums via iTunes. Major record labels are also rumored to be developing their own competing format (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/11/music-labels-to-offer-enhanced-album-format-to-compete-with-apples-cocktail/).
Another report (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/09/02/apple-to-launch-pre-cut-ringtones-at-next-weeks-media-event/) last week also claimed that Apple has secured the necessary rights to distribute pre-cut ringtones via the iTunes Store as an alternative to the custom-designed ringtones currently available for many tracks in the store.
iTunes 9
A report (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/08/itunes-9-to-include-blu-ray-support-and-phone-app-organization/) from early last month suggested that iTunes 9, likely to be introduced at tomorrow's event, will offer support for Blu-ray media, as well the ability to organize iPhone and iPod touch applications within iTunes. Claims of social media integration (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/11/more-details-on-itunes-9s-social-media-integration/) also surfaced, along with several groups of questionable screenshots.
Other Rumors
- Beatles: While numerous observers have pointed to several Beatles-related product introductions (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/19/rumors-of-the-beatles-coming-to-itunes-renewed-yet-again/) tomorrow as something possibly more than a coincidence, AllThingsD reports (http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090908/let-it-be-beatles-still-not-coming-to-itunes-tomorrow/) that there will be no Beatles-iTunes announcements tomorrow.
- Tablet: Apple's much-rumored tablet computer has been the subject of significant attention in recent months, with Apple CEO Steve Jobs reportedly (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/24/steve-jobs-almost-entirely-focused-on-tablet-project/) focusing nearly all of his attention on the project since his return from a medical leave of absence in late June. Despite some suggestion that the tablet could see (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/07/27/apple-tablet-launch-to-coincide-with-itunes-digital-album-enhancements-in-september/) an introduction as early as this month, the vast majority of reports (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/13/no-apple-tablet-introduction-at-september-keynote-event/) claim that it will not be introduced until a later date, likely early in 2010.
- Apple TV: A recent slip (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/09/01/40-gb-apple-tv-shipping-date-slips-leads-to-speculation-of-updates-next-week/) in shipping times for the low-end Apple TV has led to speculation that an update to the device could be in store, but sources have indicated (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/13/no-apple-tablet-introduction-at-september-keynote-event/) that no such announcement will be made at tomorrow's event.

Reported today on NME.com (http://www.nme.com/news/the-beatles/47188). Dunno what it ultimately means...
"Paul McCartney has told NME.COM that he wants The Beatles songs to be available as downloads.
The Fab Four's work has long been absent from official download services, but the bassist and songwriter said he and the band are keen for them to be available online – and blamed record label EMI for the delay.
"We were having problems with iTunes – well not iTunes, EMI was the problem – with downloading, which we'd like to do because that's how a lot of people get their music," explained McCartney.
However, the legend suggested the band have managed to get round the problem by getting involved in the new 'The Beatles: Rock Band' game, which is released tomorrow (September 9).
"We've kind of bypassed that [download problems] because now you can do it in 'Rock Band'," he said. "I always liked that, when you're told you can't do something and suddenly there's a little route round the back.""

Wonder what this'll be like, if this rumor is true. I wonder if it would be possible to do something like the iTunes Plus / Complete My Album thing where instead of paying for the whole album again, you just just click on a "Upgrade" button or something and get charged for what you don't have. If people had to pay for the album again just to get the liner notes (or whatever is included), I know that quite a few people will be really p**sed off.

It is guaranteed. Apple has said it will be 64-bit, like all its apps on Snow Leopard. There is no 64-bit carbon. Conclusion: iTunes 9 will be a cocoa app.

Hey,
I don't think that any 'confirmed' rumours are that good. There have barely been any, so i think that this year Apples secrets might have been well kept this year. And why won't they release a tablet at this event? eh? EH?
Nobody knows, so don't be dissapointed YET! :)

I wonder if with all these leaks, are these yearly updates losing their luster? While nothing is set in stone, it's pretty well documented we are getting a camera enabled iPod, the same yearly update to iTunes and some other small things here and there. And even then, there are going to be some very upset people who want a tablet, updated Apple TV and perhaps blu-ray support in iTunes. I am anticipating OS 3.1 for the iPhone, but wouldn't be surprised if they wait until the 25th when AT&T (who I am very happy with) enables MMS support. Then again, if Apple doesn't release 3.1 tomorrow, there will be a very upset portion of the consumers.

Where has Apple said this?
I don't know if they officially mentioned iTunes, but they said with Snow Leopard all apps will be 64-bit going forward. And indeed all apps in Snow Leopard *are* 64-bit with just a couple exceptions, the most glaring being iTunes.
Clearly, they weren't ready with a new version of iTunes for the Snow Leopard release, but there's no way they would release a major new version that is 32-bit.

While Snow Leopard is designed for the Intel based Macs, I think iTunes has to appeal to a broader based audience for the time being. The current latest version requires 10.4.10 or above, G4 or above and it is probably going to stay the same. An OS isn't as important to some people as syncing their music and all related things. Of course we won't know until tomorrow anyways. I think that September 2010 is when we will see the first native 64-bit iTunes.

Sure, of course. It won't be 64-bit *only*. It will be available as a 32-bit/64-bit combined app, like all the other ones. I have no doubt it will likely be available on Tiger and Leopard too. (As I mentioned in another thread, the latest iTunes still ran on Panther until a year ago.)
My only point was that in order for them to even *have* a 64-bit version, it *has* to be in cocoa because there is no 64-bit carbon. I'm sure it will be a combined 32/64/ppc/intel binary.

I'm usually completely underwhelmed by Apple announcement events - what actually happens is usually way less than the pre-announcement speculation.
However, since the speculation this time is itself so underwhelming, this might be the first time that I'm not over-anticipating, so maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised by something. :) I can't imagine we get anything other than a bump in iTouch capacity to 64 GB and a camera - neither of which I care about - and maybe some iTunes enhancements.
I'd be flabbergasted if I see a 128 GB Touch or a 250 GB widescreen Classic, but the chance of either are probably near zero.

Well, I'm sure iLife and iWork will go 64-bit, but probaby not until the next major release. I don't think they'll do a point update just to add 64-bit. Remember too that iLife and iWork aren't part of Snow Leopard, but iTunes is.

The Beatles MUST be one of the announcements tomorrow with it being the release date of the complete remastered collection. I expect Apple to sell a package with all the Beatles materials, just like this one sale at Amazon (Notice the Quicktime video content? Seems like a clue to me). Perhaps one of the first 'Cocktail' collections!
The Beatles in Stereo
Including eight years of groundbreaking recordings, the Beatles Stereo Box Set contains the individual albums, as well as a two CD Past Masters collection of non-album tracks. Painstakingly remastered over four years by a team of dedicated studio engineers at the legendary Abbey Road studios, they utilised vintage studio equipment in conjunction with state of the art modern recording technology to bring the catalogue to the highest fidelity it has seen since its original release.
Each of the 13 original albums also include a Quicktime mini-documentary, which feature rare photos and footage, as well as previously unheard conversations from Abbey Road studio sessions, to deliver a further insight into the the Beatles' recording process. All of these documentaries are also featured on a DVD packaged in the box set to provide more versatile viewing. The albums have all been repackaged in limited edition eco-friendly packaging, and contain additional rare photos and illuminating background notes.
This collection also marks the first time the first four Beatles albums have been available in stereo in their entirety on compact disc, making this without doubt the most complete stereo Beatles box set ever made.

What, are you new here? Jesus himself could come down from the heavens and announce the most mind-blowing Apple product ever conceived, something that would do everything anyone ever wanted, but in addition would also heal the sick, feed the hungry and create world peace.
And still people around here would complain that it doesn't come in their favorite color.

If the capacity increase (and hopefully CPU speed bump) turns out to be the case for the iPod Touch, it'll be my third iPod purchase (1st gen 4 GB Nano, 3rd gen 8 GB Nano being the first two).
32 GB is not a big enough increase over 8 to warrant a $500 purchase, but 64 GB certainly is. I've changed my listening habits since I've switched from listening at school to listening on the commute to work.
As for the Beatles in iTunes, the only real reason I want them there is so their songs show up on my Genius playlists! :D I'm probably buying the remastered box set this week if it's not too pricey.

Of the rumours listed Blu-ray support in iTunes (and presumably in other apps) is really the only one I'm interested in.
I don't really get the hate for iTunes from some people, complaining it's complicated is a little like complaining the dictionary has too many of those annoying words in it. iTunes does so much, and has managed to organise it fairly well in my opinion. Removing anything would just annoy the section of users who use whatever bit was removed. I'm not saying it's perfect, but I honestly don't get the hate. Maybe in the spirit of Snow Leopard we'll see it streamlined, but I just hope they don't do a premature iMovie'08/Quicktime X-style gutting of major features.
Cameras in the iPods would be nice, but I'm not buying a new iPod anytime soon after getting an iPod Touch at Christmas.
I couldn't care less about the Beatles on iTunes, real fans will buy the spangly new CDs anyway, everyone else probably won't care that much that they've been remastered or whatever. I can't see the big deal unless they have a tonne of new (by which I mean old but previously unreleased) exclusive material.

Blu ray? Social networking? Jesus lets brainstorm and think about what can we do to make that turd even more bloated.
I just hope you can turn off the stuff you don't want or need. Maybe the new iTunes will be more modular so the core app is slim and fast and the other stuff are addons, or plugins or something. That would probably be a smart thing since it would make it easier to add new features (or deprecate old ones) in the future.

Blu ray? Social networking? Jesus lets brainstorm and think about what can we do to make that turd even more bloated.
So what is it that actually makes it 'bloated' in your view?
Features you don't use? Well what features do you use? Imagine those, and imagine Apple drops those particular features, would that make you happy? If all you want is basic music playlists and playback there are plenty of other options, so why the hate?
I don't use, or have any desire to use the 'genius' feature. Do I want Apple to get rid of it? No, I don't, because some other people might like to use it and it really has zero impact on my use of the app, save hiding one panel, once, when I upgraded to that version.
So again, Why is it 'bloated' and a 'turd'? I keep seeing these vague criticisms with nothing to actually back them up. iTunes has always run great on all my Macs, am I just lucky or something?

In other words, a VERY boring event indeed...nothing relevant to be announced...or let's see:
- Slight improvements in the iPod line, mainly related to cameras and higher capacity - excitement scale from 0 to 10? 5.
- Support to Blu-ray WHO? A stillborn technology that has found little to no adoption in computers, not to mention the only-marginal advantages over traditional DVDs and slow uptake in global markets - 4.
- iTunes 9 with some new features and support for Apps? 4.
And...nothing else. No Apple TV update, no Tablet, no Beatles discography. I will just come back from work and check the news with no expectations at all.

I'm really hoping for a 64 bit optimized Itunes 9 that alone would make me happy, and i also hope that itunes will have a cloud ability, so we can stream music from our library anywhere around the world with just an internet connection, it could kill Spotify this way, so it's a good go for Apple.

Blu ray? Social networking? Jesus lets brainstorm and think about what can we do to make that turd even more bloated.
There's bloat that slows down an application, and there are features that are lightweight and only run when you tell them to run. For instance the BluRay support will surely be part of Quicktime X, that iTunes will call as necessary. Hopefully FrontRow will also gain support (notice how FrontRow wasn't updated much with Snow Leopard - possibly it will gain a proper update tomorrow as well).
An iTunes written in Cocoa, using Snow Leopard's APIs, will feel very snappy and responsive, even as the features add up. It already incorporates webkit, so adding social networking ajax calls into the application might not be such an overhead as you expect.

What would be the point of Blu-Ray support in iTunes with no Blu-Ray support for Macs? I would imagine the two announcements would come side by side and not saying "hey, Blu-Ray in iTunes... oh yea that's right Macs don't have Blu-Ray".
But, the iPod has to be better than the iPhone, so it will get a 64GB option, the same camera (or better; perhaps even with Flash), a faster processor and probably every other feature the iPhone 3GS has.

I can see a reason for a camera on the Touch but I'm hard pressed to see a reason for one on the Nano.
It will add to the cost in one way or another.
The Nano is a music machine first and foremost....or do people use it for photos much as well?
Just curious what you all think?

Am I correct to understand that past September iPod events have also seen hardware and/or software updates to the AppleTV line? So, if the collective wisdom is that there won't be an update now, when would it occur? Isn't September through December the big home theatre push for the holidays and the return of Football?
I said it before in another post, if the AppleTV is Apple's "hobby" then it's the most neglected hobby I've ever seen. I mean c'mon, Apple has how much content available for download and they're still selling a unit with a 40GB hard drive?!?

What would be the point of Blu-Ray support in iTunes with no Blu-Ray support for Macs? I would imagine the two announcements would come side by side and not saying "hey, Blu-Ray in iTunes... oh yea that's right Macs don't have Blu-Ray".
Well, if that includes blu-ray support for itunes on Windows, I could have save myself a few bucks by not buying a blu-ray software player to use with my BD-R.

Support to Blu-ray WHO? A stillborn technology that has found little to no adoption in computers, not to mention the only-marginal advantages over traditional DVDs and slow uptake in global markets - 4.
.
Blu-ray has its purposes. I share a lot of media with family and friends & certainly don't want to be loaning my portable hard drive around. I understand why a lot of people may not find it useful, although an option to have one would be nice.

I really feel like Apple needs to make some reference to the Tablet or there is going to be an awful lot of people buying Netbooks for Christmas presents this year (including my wife for me). I could see a very boring iPod event up until the very last minute. Everyone is ready to pack it in and then Steve makes his appearance and says "one more thing" and holds up a Tablet for everyone to see and then the presentation ends. No explanation necessary. That is all it would take to blow the whole thing wide open. Just a promise of a Tablet to come. I know I am on the border of buying a Netbook now or waiting for a Tablet next year. I really need a portable device now (and I'm sorry but I refuse to pay the high price that MBP's are asking) and I especially need one before a trip I'm going on in December. But if I just have some assurance that something is coming I'd hold off.

iTunes is so lagging compared to other apps.
It's bloated, slow, complicated....
There have been no major innovations in years. Please 'trim' it down apple.
The lack of under-the-hood advancements and "major innovations" leads me to believe that iTunes is going to be completely rewritten with some killer new features. Hopefully, these improvements come with iTunes 9.

I've learned not to over-anticipate for these events; that just leads to disappointment. However, Apple has to have something more up its sleeve than cameras. They wouldn't waste the media's time with something so lackluster. At least, I would hope not.
We aren't going to be seeing any MacBook (Pro/Air) improvements, and we won't be seeing a tablet, either. Anything like that is not going to be announced at an iPod event. I'm hoping that there's some sort of computer event next month with a new iMac, MacBook Air and a tablet.

Why do I have a feeling this is just going to be another waste of time? Seriously, why even bother to waste the money to host an event like this if all they are going to do is to announce some software (itune 9), or a new ring tone function on iTune store and even the new ipod touch? Apple could just as easily make an web announcement and millions people could still go ready about it. Please Apple introduce something great and new, "don't just having an event for the sake of having an event". And it's bad to get people's expectation all up in the air and deliver nothing in the end....

Apple should call the next version of iTunes for Windows, "iTunes 2008".

Crossing fingers for GPS on touch. I would love to consolidate and get rid of my GPS data logger that I carry around when I take photos. This info. makes me think it will happen for the touch eventually, but I can only hope it's tomorrow. http://db.tidbits.com/article/10083 Apple needs to do something with places in iPhoto. It's such a great feature, and adding GPS to the touch would open up geotagging to so many people. If there isn't any GPS, I don't know if I'll make the jump from my 60 GB 5th gen to a 64 GB touch. I might have to hold out another year and hope for GPS.

Claims of social media integration (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/11/more-details-on-itunes-9s-social-media-integration/) also surfaced, along with several groups of questionable screenshots.
However, rumors that iTunes will get slimmer and faster to load - thereby making it more useful for simply backing up and synching content with an iPod or iPhone - seem very unlikely.

The Wednesday after Labor Day is Apple's traditional ipod announcement day. Harmonix picked 9/9/09 as the release date because of Revolution #9. EMI picked 9/9/09 to piggyback Harmonix's marketing.

If there is an iTunes update, I hope it'll fix the thing where you're listening to music or watching a video in iTunes while also ripping a CD in it, & the music/video you're listening skips while it's ejecting the CD. I hate that! Does ejecting a CD really require that much CPU time?
Maybe it's the paranoid skeptic in me, but if I have a bad feeling about any iTunes update Apple puts out tomorrow. I just fear it'll either still be a Carbon app or if it goes Cocoa, it'll be Snow Leopard only. For Carbon, I could understand how rewriting a whole app (especially one as big as iTunes) would be a chore, but it would be really hypocritical of Apple to tell all other Companies to go to Cocoa when they don't. As for the going Cocoa in iTunes, it might be Snow Leopard only, but I wouldn't totally bet on it. If it is Snow Leopard only, it'll only be a business ploy to get people to upgrade to Snow Leopard (and by extension, a new Mac for all those PPC users out there). Although, it would be interesting to see how fast iTunes would be with OpenCL & Grand Central. Ripping CDs should be quite a bit faster, with your CD drive being the main bottleneck. Although, iTunes does a good job at maximizing CD speed already I find. It's more of an issue of how good the actual CD is rather than the drive.

What does going cocoa (or 64-bit for that matter) have to do with going Snow Leopard only? Haven't you noticed most of your Tiger and Panther apps are cocoa too? :) Apple still sells (or gives away) lots of cocoa apps that run on Tiger.
Besides, this would be dumb, because new iPods will probably need the new iTunes, and that means they can no longer sell these iPods to Tiger and Leopard users. Not going to happen!

Although absurd, my fingers are crossed that Apple will release some sort of amp/stereo component - something ridiculously simple that integrates with your network and/or Apple TV and/or a stand-alone iPod. I picture something with the same form factor - perhaps slightly thicker - of the Apple TV. I would not miss my current amp and all its BS surround sound settings, etc. for a moment if Apple came out with simple 5.1 amp that stacked nicely with my Apple TV. (The bonus would be that the heat generated by an Apple TV and Apple Amp could replace your central heating unit and cut down on your utilities.)
Flame away...

I guess this is always possible, but it would be a drastic change from past behaviour. You've always been able to buy new iPods to work with fairly old computers. Like I said, you could still get the latest iTunes (and iPods) for Panther until last year, and on windows, you could do the same with Windows 2000 until two years ago.
Making a new version of iTunes for Snow Leopard only would be the same as making the windows version for Windows 7 only. It would be complete and utter folly. Sure, they want people to upgrade their macs, but nothing is forcing them. Some people don't mind running old software. They'll upgrade eventually but aren't in a hurry. But these people still buy new iPods. Why would you preclude yourself from selling to them?

I used to get really excited on iPod announcement days primarily waiting for an increase in iPod capacity. These days, I just hope there is a no DECREASE in the current maximum 120 GB capacity of the Classic. I still have my 160 GB Classic and will never buy any new iPod unless it exceeds or at least matches that capacity. I would really rather not have to downgrade capacity for something like a camera I don't need. I'd love a touch widescreen, but there's no way I can go from 160 GB to 64 GB. It's almost degrading. :)

There seems to be a lot of people not understanding what the big deal about the Beatles on iTunes is about. Let me attempt to help you understand.
The Beatles are one of the few groups that cross generations with amazing success. While the older generations may already have every album and possibly every cd, the younger generations have few cds and get all of their music in mp3 form.
Let's consider a 15 year old that grew up listening to the Beatles on the radio in their parents car. Most teenagers today have iPods, not cd players. That 15 year old doesn't even have their own car stereo to play cds in. That 15 year old likely has a computer but uses iTunes to play their mp3 collection. That 15 year old may also only like certain songs and can afford a handful of their favorite songs but can't afford to go into a store (or onto Amazon) and buy all of the cds to get those songs.
Add in the fact that most young people get giftcards for iTunes as presents and not giftcards for music stores any longer. Plus the time required to rip all of the cds into your computer (a full length disc takes 3-5 minutes on my computer times 13 albums = about an hour of wasted time, maybe not a lot to you, but it's a lot to me and most people I know!)...it's a whole lot easier to pull up iTunes and hit "buy." Plus, the way we listen to music has changed. Most younger people do not listen to an album straight through...you listen to mixes or an artist on shuffle. You can't do that with cds!
Even for myself and my friends (late 20's)...we're all Beatles fans but none of us own all of the cds. Personally, I stopped purchasing cds (with the exception of my favorite artists that I collect their material) because it was such a waste. All I was doing was buying the cd, bringing it home to burn, and then the cd sat there, never being used again. I use iTunes on my computer, have my iPod wired into my car stereo, and have my iPhone with me for any other times I want to listen to music.
My PC using, non-iPod owning roommate put it perfectly the other day when she said that if Apple came out with a Beatles iPod preloaded with their music, she would run down to the nearest Apple store and wouldn't care if it costs $700...she'd be first in line to buy one.

The only flaw in this argument is that most 15 year olds are likely using bittorrent or rapidshare instead. :)

twitter. Apple Records or Apple Inc. is a partnership of Yoko Ono, Olivia Harrison, Paul and Ringo, so she most certainly does have a say, and would know. It is what they call a reverse democracy, so if any one of them does not like a release or project, it is shut down. Paul himself recently said it was onyl EMI holding up the release, and their copyright on early beatles recordings runs out in 2013. Sky News posted the headline (Yoko, Itunes, etc.) but has not posted accompanying article to confirm yet. beatlesnews.com will have more details when available.

Regarding the "shuffle" issue, the CD player in my car (2009 Chevy Malibu) has a "random" button that allows me to shuffle the songs on the CD if I want. Interestingly enough, I never use this feature and yet the CD player lacks a function that I wish it had: a constant display of the time of the current track. The only way it will display the time of the track is when you hit the fast-forward or rewind buttons.
As for CD's in general, I use them primarily as a backup of data at this point. When I buy something from the Amazon mp3 store or from iTunes, one of the first things I do with the album is burn it to a blank CD so that I can have a backup of it. My Macbook's hard drive crashed last year so I'm pretty paranoid about that.

yes. Second time i've made that mistake on this board. I myself prefer the original Parlophone pressings but will buy the mono box. I rarely buy anything off Itunes unless it has serious extras. That said, the itunes releases would immediately capture many of the top selling spots on itunes and it would be great press and profit all around. Not that either side needs it as much as you or me, but alas...oh and BTW, Sgt. pepper and Rubber Soul stereo mixes sound fantastic, i already loaded them to my ipod (AIFF size, im that much of a beatles geek)...

Why are you yelling? Check your import settings in iTunes, you can set mp3 bit rates. 384 is very good quality, most people can't tell it from CD. If it's set to 128 by default, that's the reason.

Honestly, I think most of the people who want the Beatles on their ipod, already have them using other mechanisms. I think they are a few years late.
I agree, and I don't understand why EMI didn't jump at the chance to make them available a long time ago. Why not make your music available to as many people as possible, in as many forms as possible? It seems like a pretty easy decision to me.

I'm sorry I have to call out BS on All things D I think they are just trying to keep the rumor mill going and generate more hits on their site.
Apple almost ALWAYS hosts these keynotes especially the iPod ones on Tuesday, why a Wednesday all of the sudden unless there is some sort of special reason why. Beatles music gets the remastered release on 09-09-09 there is just too much significance with that date for them not to release beatles on iTunes.
If I recall Apple has made some of those "11th hour" deals hours before keynotes to ensure that specific music or DRM issues made it onto the iTunes updates.

I don't quite get the fascination with having the Beatles on iTunes. I am a big fan of them and got most of my Beatles already on my iTunes from other sources like CDs. Why is it so important to have them on iTunes?
Im not a Beatles fan - however there are a handful of songs off several albums I would like to buy but not the whole album. Thats where it would benefit me and the Beatles because Im more likely to copy them off a friend than buy the physical CD to get a few songs. Im sure Im not the only one.

Final Predictions for Me:
(1) iTunes 9
- 64 Bit for Snow Leopard / Leopard, 32 Bit for everyone else
- Quicktime X visual style built into iTunes
- Facebook / Social Networking
- App Management within iTunes
(2) Cocktail (this might not even be ready)
(3) iPod Classic
- untouched
- price drop
(4) iPod Nano
- Larger Screen, 1.5:1
- Video Camera / Mic
- 16/32 gigs
(5) iPod Touch
- Video Camera / Mic (No HD)
- 16/32/64 gigs
- $199/$299/$399
(6) iPhone OS 3.1
- To be released late September
No Beatles, No Blu-Ray, No Apple TV (which I am very hoping for), No Tablet, No HD for either output/playback/recording on the iPhone/iTouch.
As far as Steve Jobs, I think he will be back since we haven't heard anything about other Apple Exec's being in charge of the event. This will help the stock, especially since the products are lackluster.

I don't exactly find that being a good reason and I will tell you why.
They have held the keynote and iPod refreshes late into the month of September before (once being the 25th of September) Now reports that the new iPods are even delayed. If this was a possibility of happening don't you think Apple would have help the conference later in the month as they have before due to iPod manufacturing delays?
That's why I believe the Beatles releases have something to do with it. Apple wants to make a big deal out of it and rightly so Jobs has stated many times how he would love to have the Beatles on iTunes.

Apple has done this before. Whenever there is a holiday on a Monday, they delay the Keynote a day. Doesn't mean Beatles won't happen, but every source says Beatles on digital distribution isn't coming (except this last minute Yoko Ono Twitter thing, but no date is there).

Which might make lend you to think maybe they did reach a deal. I know they have done that because of Labor day but I'm not denying that now. But lets look at previous keynotes that have been later in the month due to iPod delays.
And the 9-9-09. Apple know how much everyone wants The Beatles on iTunes. Even if they are not available tomorrow out the door doesn't mean they might not be announcing that it's coming (hopefully) with a date.

My problem with this is that there are more than one digital distribution method for music now (especially Amazon.com, which is successful). The music industry has been reluctant with Apple (look how long 256K, non-DRM music took to come to iTunes even though it was originally Apple's idea). I find it highly unlikely they struck a deal to get it exclusively, especially on something so major.

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!!! Do you realize 3.0 just came out 3 months ago?? They haven't even released 3.1 yet, why would they release 4.0? Besides, Apple doesn't release new iPhone/iPod Touch OS's until June/July of the next year.
Don’t you get it! Apple likes to purposely confuse their consumers. They spread wrong rumors to make us think something other then the actual product is coming out. "Its only Rock and Roll" is Apple stating the opposite. I bet Apple is coming out with a whole lot more then music related products. They're throwing us a curve ball with have a Rolling Stones lyric on the invitation causing us to assume it there can't be a Beatle announcement. I bet Apple is going to have semiannual announcements, September and March.

It's like anything else on iTunes. If you don't own the CDs, you might be interested in having them on iTunes. If you own the CDs or don't like the music, you probably could care less if they were on iTunes. As far as why buy on the iTunes store vs buy / rip a CD, it's for all the same reasons that people currently use when buying music at the iTunes store.

Well, apparently EMI, via the Financial Times, via Gizmodo, has confirmed that the Beatles be making an appearance with Apple: iTunes, the event, or otherwise.
http://gizmodo.com/5354915/extra-confirmed-emi-says-no-beatles-on-itunes-tomorrow
http://blogs.ft.com/techblog/2009/09/apple-might-offer-a-cocktail-of-new-ipods-and-music/
According to McCartney, it is piracy that EMI is worried about (read: money). McCartney and Starr are all for putting it on iTunes, but it's the label that has the issue.
on a side note, did EMI purchase Apple Records? If so, could there still be some feelings from the lawsuit? and how much would McCartney and Starr get for their catalog going to iTunes, when it's the Jackson estate that would seem to earn the most?

True dat. If we see Steve Jobs at the keynote tomorrow The Beatles are on their way to iTunes. They may not be available immediately but Jobs could announce a later date in order to allow for the distribution of the remastered CD's.
And why didn't Sky news simply retract the story instead of having it pulled ASAP ?

2007-- Wednesday Sept 5th Two days after Labor Day.
2008-- Tuesday Sept 9th One week and a day after Labor Day.
2009-- Wednesday Sept 9th Two days after Labor Day.
So over the past 3 years the iPod event has taken place a week or more after Labor Day. This time it's the Day after Labor Day.
Actually this time it's two days after Labor Day not the day after

I sure hope iTunes 9 fixes the sound quality/noise/dropout problems with iTunes 8.
Playing songs thru AirTunes for example causes the audio playing through the host computer to become noisy/distorted. Quite unacceptable. Was hoping installing Snow Leopard would help but no such luck.
Im not having this problem at all - did you check your cables on the Airport Express?

OK it's official now, Beatles on iTunes, yes. Beatles on iTunes tomorrow, no.
“Conversations between Apple and EMI are ongoing and we look forward to the day when we can make the music available digitally. But it’s not tomorrow,” Ernesto Schmitt, EMI’s global catalog president, told the FT’s Andrew Edgecliffe-Johnson.

Audio on the host computer becomes distorted, not from the Airport Express.
It's not cables because I can temporarily clear it up by changing the output settings to something else and then back (or by disabling AirTunes).

John Gruber posted his predictions on Daring Fireball (http://daringfireball.net/2009/09/rock_and_roll_prelude).
He says:
-The word is that Apple’s “secrecy machine” has been kicked back into high gear ever since you-know-who returned from you-know-what.
TOUCH-The most important iPod, the Touch, is getting a camera, and I believe will match the iPhone 3GS on processor speed and RAM.
CLASSIC-The Classic isn’t going away just yet — I think they’ll bump the capacity from 120 to 160 GB and keep the price at $249.
NANO-First, that Apple has developed some sort of top-secret new material / treatment for the Nano shell. No idea what it is, if true. Second, that the Nano is getting an FM tuner
SHUFFLE-My gut feeling is that the current no-button Shuffle has been a dud sales-wise, and at best has been a disappointment. So I’m thinking Apple will announce a brand-new design — maybe even with a button.
STEVE JOBS-I hope he’s up on stage doing his thing, but my gut still says no, that he’s done as the company’s spokesman.
Wildest prediction and most interesting:
-iTUNES-What makes iTunes such an odd duck for Apple is that it’s not just a Mac app — there are far more iTunes users on Windows, and but there is no 64-bit Cocoa runtime for Windows. So here’s my pet theory: at some point iTunes will be rewritten using WebKit to render the UI. I’m not saying iTunes will become a web browser — just that the UI itself will be a WebKit view. WebKit is cross-platform and built for the future.
-COCKTAIL-What platform could this be based on that would support playback on Mac OS X, Windows, iPhone OS, Apple TV (with a software update), and even, say, a new tablet platform scheduled for early 2010? Oh, and it would help if it were based on technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript that developers are already familiar with.
Obviously: WebKit.
So my guess is that Cocktail is going to be like a sort of next-generation Dashboard.

Finally, iPod resellers have also reported dwindling stocks (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/28/apple-resellers-report-ipod-stocks-dwindling-all-skus-being-discontinued/) of existing iPod models and discontinuation of product codes for those models.
Alright... reporting about the mockup images again is totally stirring up the hype. it's kinda sad when people make photoshopped images (and the sadder part is that they make it believable in some cases i.e. 'leaks' and again, stirring up interest) and whilst at it, 1.5:1 is usually denoted as 3:2, even though I understand that ppl are trying to get it into the x:1 form.
And lastly, it's obvious when new products come out they don't stock up on old stuff. 'dwindling stocks' has been mentioned countless times in the past in many articles... :D

Camera
CPU Speed (might not be shown, but it will be faster nonetheless)
Stronger speaker

Here's my final "three-day wild guess" on what we'll see on 9 September 2009:
1) Steve Jobs will host the keynote address.
2) Will announce that the iTunes Store now sells an amazing 25% of all new music in the USA.
3) Will demonstrate iTunes 9.0 with QuickTime X, available immediately in a 64-bit version for MacOS X 10.6 and Windows Vista/7 in 64-bit mode. Will use somewhat revamped interface, adds social network support for Facebook and MySpace, and adds support for the "Cocktail" digital album liner note format.
4) Announces the phaseout of the iPod shuffle (!).
5) Announces the new 5G iPod nano with new, wider aspect ratio screen and "Cocktail" digital album liner note format support. Will be available in three versions:
a) 8 GB with no camera/microphone (US$99). Case color will be silver only.
b) 16 GB with 3.2 megapixel camera/microphone (US$149). Case colors will the same as current 4G iPod nano selection.
c) 32 GB with 3.2 megapixel camera/microphone (US$199) Case colors will be black and Product Red only.
6) Announces new 7G iPod classic with new, higher-resolution and wider aspect ratio screen (smaller click wheel to accommodate wider aspect ratio screen) and "Cocktail" digital album liner note format support. Storage capacity is now 160 GB using a new 1.8" single platter drive, and case colors will be silver and black only. Possibility exists for 128 GB flash memory storage if Apple can secure supplies at a decent price in lieu of 160 GB hard drive. Will be priced at US$249, the same as the current "6.5G" iPod classic.
7) Announces new 3G iPod touch, essentially an iPhone 3Gs with no cellphone function. Will incorporate new 3.2 megapixel sensor camera on back of player, will incorporate iPhone 3.1 software with full "Cocktail" digital album liner note support. Will be priced at US$199 (16 GB), US$299 (32 GB) and US$399 (64 GB).
8) Announces deal to offer the remastered Beatles albums on iTunes Store, to be available for download including the full "Cocktail" digital album liner notes in mid-November 2009.

About Steve Jobs, I think we have a 50/50 chance of seeing him. But I wouldn't mind seeing Phil Schiller, I like him.
4) Announces the phaseout of the iPod shuffle (!).
As much as I think the button-less iPod Shuffle is a stupid idea (the last gen was the sweet spot between size and functionality), they are definitely not getting rid of it. Especially now. IDK if anyone else has noticed, but the shuffle is not updated with the rest of the iPods. They do it during the Spring/late winter (~March for those of you south of the equator). Besides, the shuffle is selling quite well. So no.

I think you've pretty much nailed it. I agree with what someone else said that I doubt they would phase out the shuffle though - unless of course the video nano was getting down to the size of the original shuffle
I haven't seen anyone else mention this, but they had to leave the iPhone OS 3.1 introduction until the ipod touch had a camera. If 3.1 has the rumoured augmented reality APIs included then they would need for all devices running it to have a camera. I hope we see the OS3.1 launch today. I'm wondering if google maps will have a nifty street view tie-in as a demonstrator app.

I don't think the iTunes/Beatles announcement is coming tomorrow. If it were indeed true, wouldn't they have chosen a Beatles song to headline the show vs. a Rolling Stones song? LoL That seems to sort of fly in the face of that idea IMHO. ;)
Hopefully, they'll announce some new damn text tones for my iphone. It's only been never since they last did that.

By the way, one reason for the existance of the shuffle in the first place was because it could play FairPlay-DRM'ed AAC files.
But now that Apple has dropped FairPlay for AAC audio files, there is no real need for the shuffle anymore. Hence the possibility of a non-camera 5G iPod nano with 8 GB of flash memory selling for only US$99, not much more than the current 3G iPod shuffle with 4 GB of flash memory.

itunes/beatles announcement
end of shuffle
iPod touch w/camera 8gb-64gb the 8gb will be $149

4] Not going to happen. See the camera comment above mine
5] Don't see the tiered thing happening. Probably cheaper to have all the nanos have the same case design (unless they decide to plug the camera hole in a camera-less model, but I don't see Steve Jobs okaying that), and after the current nano-chromatic scheme, I don't see them going back to the way the second and third generations were structured color-wise. I don't know about a 32GB model either; last time Apple hastily added a 16GB model and canned the 4GB model after production started because of the Zune 8 and Zune 16. Not much pressure on that front this time.
6] 160GB single-platters don't exist, not that I know of, at least. Currently it's still 120 single and 250 double. While it's time for a hardware change, I don't find it likely.
8] Why announce it now? EMI already said it wasn't happening yet/soon.

Usually a week or two. I too live in Cali. However, I'm imagining there will be a lower-priced tax-free & free shipping online store out there. Amazon usually doesn't discount off retail, though their free shipping and no tax more than make up for it.

I don't know if I am in the minority on this or not.. but does it seem like a pointless upgrade for the ipods to have cameras in the back of them.. I have never once looked at my ipod (classic, nano and 2 shuffles) and thought to myself I wanted a camera on the back of it.
it almost seems like Jobs is running out of ideas this year.. maybe it just one of those years where nothing really new is coming out, but a mild update
only time will tell I guess - I guess every 3 or 4 years there is something revolutionary that Apple puts out if my mind serves me correctly

I use to think that about camera phones. I now take at least 6x what I use to take (according to iPhoto). I use the camera on my iPhone daily.

well that is another idea entirely.. every phone has a camera in it now too.. so why does an ipod need one? just in case we need to take a picture and our phone isn't with us, but our ipod is? who takes their ipod more places than their cell phone? you may argue this but I guarantee more people take their phones
and I agree they will fly off shelves.. I was just stating my opinion about it

Gruber has lost his mind. He needs to quit drinking the Adobe AIR kool-aid. The iTunes Store may get rendered by WebKit in iTunes 9, but there’s no way the UI will be in WebKit view. Maybe Apple will bring back “yellow box” for Windows?!?
You made me laugh and I don't mean that in a offensive way with the yellow box reference. iTunes on Windows would require a complete redesign on the Windows side if they went with 64bit Cocoa and it has to be mIntained. It's interesting that he says this as iTunes is already in a sense a browser, albeit a specialized one.
I really couldn't care less as long as iTunes is faster than it is now. It seems to be the slowest app on my Mac and I use it most as a music player which is a problem.

I disagree. An iPod with a camera in it at least gives it an ability of a eye-fi card which costs a lot. Many would use this instead of their personal camera as I do. Also it will probably have the iPhone's ability to touch focus and that's not considering that it will probably have a microphone that the nano has built in already which will help it with a lot of apps. You're looking for something special and it will not happen. The iPhone will get those special features first. The iPod touch will benefit from getting some of the features of the iPhone w/o a cell contract while always have twice the storage in a new update. Be happy with that. Nobody can offer more and that's including the Zune.

Most camera phones have crap cameras. Not that the iphone's camera is going to replace any camera, even the worst P+S, but it's far better than the camera on my phone, and it's only a year old. Does anyone know of any phones that have better cameras than the iphone? I'm certainly no expert, just curious.
The way I look at it is this: I had a 1G ipod and didn't buy another one until my current 5G. I'm about due for an upgrade, and if apple wants to put a camera on my new 64 GB touch, why not? I always have my ipod in one pocket and my phone in the other. I'll certainly be pulling the ipod out to take a picture if I have a choice. I've NEVER used the camera on my phone for anything other than phone wallpapers or picture messages. At least with the ipod touch, I can take a photo that I would actually look at on my computer.
Now, if I wasn't already in the market for a new ipod, there's no way a camera would make me upgrade. And if they don't up the capacity to 64 GB, I'm still not upgrading.

Far-fetched I know, but that would be hella-interesting if they did bring back yellow box.

You are forgetting one other very important time when you need to take a picture of your phone, but don't have a mirror available. This seems to create a grave and desperate need for iPod cameras. ;)
lol, but seriously, I agree. I see the logic behind an iPod touch camera, but the nano/classic don't (seem) to need one. Although if Steve Jobs is presenting then you will need one... oh yes... you will need one...
scratch that, you will need two

who takes their ipod more places than their cell phone?I do. I hate having a cell phone. I hate it when I am at the park relaxing and have my serenity interrupted by the brash chirp of a cell phone. With just my iPod though, I can listen to some good music or an entertaining audiobook and temporarily remove myself from life with no interruptions.

Ummm, just about any Sony Ericsson ever created, or even some Nokias for that matter.
but if you ever do find yourself using one of these, you will quickly discover that a good camera is no replacement for a usable interface.
iPhone's may not have the greatest camera, but everything else makes up for this minor inconvenience ten-fold.

So they don't need to take them to school or leave them where people will steal them. High School students fall in that same group you just stereotyped and I think they're the most common iPod users. It's a responsibility thing. If you don't think they need one don't buy it. If they buy it and loose it, they learn faster. ;)

Too much Beatles talk and games for it to not happen. Even Amazon is offering remastered Beatles albums. Besides, Michael's dead and his funeral cost too much. The family needs the money. :D

They may not need them, but they have them.
And the risk of teachers taking them is minimal, because well, most just don't care. If you are unlucky enough to have it taken, they usually give it back at the end of the day (although they probably hate you at this point)

I feel almost responsible to point out that the go ahead to create Beatles: Rock Band would have happened about a year ago. Those things aren't made overnight.
and they started remastering them back in 2005 i think.
The only decision that could have been made after his death would be if they do wind up on iTunes. And to be honest, I am sick of the whole Beatles/iTunes thing.
Really people, anybody who so obsessive about that topic probably already have them on CD's ripped to iTunes, I know I do

Some tablet confirmation would go miles at a dull event like this.

Hmm. It doesn't seem like there's anything REALLY interesting to look forward too. I guess the camera in the iPod touch is exciting, but that's all. Maybe we'll see refreshes to other line ups too, even though I don't really think any of the ipods except the Touch needs a refresh.

You just made my week even more with the link. I'm a 31 years old partying right now and haven't heard that mentioned in almost 5 years from a friend. Every time I post on this board I feel like I'm talking to a 15 year old. Thanks for the link. I totally forgotten about that post and I've been reading MacRumors for a while now. All I care about is making iTunes faster with people larger than a 10,000 song library (not torrented).
