AppleInsider reports (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/09/09/sources_reveal_apples_new_ipod_lineup_with_part_numbers.html) on a tip from a reliable source who has also in the past provided reliable information to MacRumors detailing the forthcoming iPod model updates to be introduced today.

The list includes iPod nano models in both 8 GB and 16 GB capacities, each available in the same nine colors currently available in existing models. Also included are 160 GB iPod classic models in the same silver and black colors found on existing models, but increased in capacity from the current 120 GB offerings. Finally, iPod shuffle models in 2 GB and 4 GB capacities are listed in several colors. It is unclear whether the new iPod shuffle models correspond to the latest version (http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/) introduced in March in 4 GB capacities in silver and black or to earlier-generation models that have continued to be offered in 1 GB capacities in multiple colors.

There is no mention of the iPod touch in the alleged list of updated models, an omission that may be related to last-minute production problems (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/09/07/its-only-rock-and-roll-banner-and-last-minute-ipod-production-problems/) with camera modules.MC027LL/A - IPOD NANO 8GB - SILVER

I'm beginning to seriously wonder if this refresh really needs an event. Bump in memory, a few models get cameras (major yawn) and perhaps a new iTunes (major yawn with a little bit of dribble).

I could understand it if there was a new ATV or some brand new product or major new function - but a camera? Pah!!

That would cost $500 and be a niche product. Flash is still too expensive above 100 GBs. 64 GBs on a touch is all we'll be getting this year I think.

You couldn't even listen to that many song without the battery dying. I really do not see a point for such a large HD.

Plus, do you know how much time it would require to listen to that many songs? The price for a 360 would be ridiculous.

240 GB 1.8" Hard Drives are dual-platter. This means that it is substantially thicker, heavier and more power-hungry than the single-platter versions. There is an audience for over 160 GBs, but it's very very small, and not worth the R & D and production costs over such a small market. Let's face it, you could easily sync what you need and remove what you don't need with 160 GBs.

I owned two of the original 160GB Classics. One was defective right out of the box and the other one lasted about a year before it crapped out. Those were the only iPods I ever had any problems with. In both cases the audio output was heavily distorted. Is that why they discontinued them for a while? I hope these ones will be more reliable.

The idea is to be able to have your ENTIRE music collection with you, instead of having to pick and choose what you have on your iPod.

I moved from an iPod Classic to a 16GB Nano and have been regretting the lack of space despite the tiny form factor. I'm actually considering selling the Nano and moving back to the Classic. Being able to have your ENTIRE collection with you is awesome, especially when you're on a road trip and want to play obscure tracks for friends in the car. :)

They will unveil the iPod Touch today. There isn't a doubt in my mind. The way it works: (EXTREMELY SIMPLIFIED)
1) Apple creates a design for a product.
2) Apple sends this design to various product manufactures, or at least what parts they need with order quantities.
3) Parts are shipped to assembly plant in China and are assembled. (This is when an EXTREMELY diluted extract of Jobs' sweat is sprayed to each product giving it that amazing new unboxing smell. Can't stress enough just how diluted his sweat is. If ingested in 1:1 ratio. . . It could render that man impotent.)
4) Working prototypes are sent back to Apple for inspection. (Most likely what we will see Jobs pull out of his pocket today.)
5) 1-2 Weeks should start seeing iPod Touch in stores. (If not sooner.)

Not enough of an audience to matter, though.

They used to have a 120 and a 160 and then they dropped the 160. Tells you which one was selling more, doesn't it?

They're raising it now because they can get the 160 drives cheaper and thinner than before, but the fact is that not many people want even 160 GB.

If they did it wouldn't have been dropped in the first place.

Just out of interest, what can you do with an iPod Classic without pulling it out of your pocket?

I used to own one and was able to skip songs and press the play/pause button. Changing volume worked through jeans with thin fabric, but not with thicker fabric. Of course you could put your hand in the pocket to change volume etc but that's already half way to getting it out!

As far as I'm concerned, I can change tracks and play/pause on my iPhone with the Apple Headphones with mic (which also works on the iPod Touch AFAIK?). And I control the volume by pressing the buttons through my trousers...

So I don't understand how the Classic has any advantages over the Touch in that respect?

Other than a camera, and some tweaks, i recon they're going to keep the design of these models drifting along. The iPhone too got an arguably modest update (visually) so perhaps Apple are just trying to keep their new designs close to their chest until the economy picks up.

I was semi-hoping for a bump too, but really, the nano isn't the product of choice for audiophiles and people with large libraries. That and Apple wants to force you to the next model up where there's more profit. It's all about the money. Maybe a 32 GB nano next year.

There are many who use their classics not as a portable walking Pod but for DJing, or at studios, work, home where its plugged into stereos. I have more than 160GB of music and yes I can't listen to it all at once, but I want my entire collection (especially when I travel) with me so I can choose.

I have a 160 and many of us are not opposed to a ticker pod since it's not about portability.

FWIW, I know two people who rip all their CDs to Apple Lossless format. In that case, 120/160 GB isn't really that large and the Classic becomes the manditory iPod of choice.

Way to think right smack dab in the center of the inside of the box. I'm so sick of hearing people say this same thing over and over. "you could never listen to that many songs".

LISTEN TO ME RIGHT NOW. It's not about listening to EVERY song at once, it's about listening to ANY song at once! I have my entire music collection on my ipod 40GB, I can choose any song from my collection ANY time I want. I can shuffle through my collection whenever I feel like it. I hear songs I forgot about that I wouldn't even think of "syncing". It's the main reason i still have a 5 year old ipod instead of a touch. I'm hoping that changes today (or at least soon).

That's it. That right there is the reason why people want storage capacity. I have been eyeing ipod photo's/ipod video's because they offered enough storage for my library. However, I just got a 32gb iPhone two days ago and for now it will suffice. That is until I start loading it up with apps. Esp. if I buy that tomtom app I am on the fence about. I believe it is about 7 gigs or so.

That is actually pretty easy, if you know how Apple works – they need to forward everything to servers all around the globe, and that's where I step in to get software from (sometimes up to a day ahead of the official release).

p.s. I cannot provide a direct download link, for obvious reasons ;)

There's a new 64GB Touch at your local :apple: store with your name on it.

There is no mention of the iPod touch in the alleged list of updated models, an omission that may be related to last-minute production problems (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/09/07/its-only-rock-and-roll-banner-and-last-minute-ipod-production-problems/) with camera modules.

or there was never any intention, despite rumors, to put the camera on the touch because then it would be one decent VoIP app away from cutting into iphone sales

would still like to see a 128gb ssd classic though

That would be really cool, but I'd say we're a year or two away from having something like that become a reality. The prices for memory are dropping quickly though - the sooner we get there, the better!

. . . . and a new round of complaints can start.

Funny because it's true! Although, now that they've been announced, I haven't heard too many complaints so far. You'll never please everyone all of the time, and I guess that's doubly true for Apple products!

What about 32gb iPod nano. I thought that was going to be a given. They have been upping the nano since they came out! No hope for 64gb nano. Next year?

I think a 32gb nano would be an awesome product for someone looking for an iPod mainly dedicated to playing music. If the apps are a big draw, the Touch is a great purchase, but if music is the main concern, 32 gigs holds a heck of a lot of music - probably far more than 90% of the population has in their collection. With the addition of the Nike+ pedometer and (unreleased) heart rate monitor, it's a pretty compelling little MP3 player.
