I am truly truly dissapointed, but at the same time I just saved myself some coin... ;) I will not be getting any iPods now!!!
I see no reason why they would not include a camera on the top of the line iPod, and then include a camera on the Nano.
I see no logical reason!!! I was ready to buy a new iPod Touch, but now have little incentive to purchase the 3rd Gen Touch
Does anyone understand where Apple is coming from?

I agree. Apple developed all the features I wanted in my iPod... on the nano. I was looking forward to upgrading to a new touch today, but there's nothing in the new touch that I want.
I carry my touch everywhere, and yet the nano gets the new features. They're trying to make me carry two iPods -_-

Apple probably thought it would jeopardize iPhone sales because if it has a camera, it automatically makes it a phone killer.
I understand that every cell phone has a camera, but it doesn't mean it's taking away from the phone function.

I think that the ipod touch will get a camera. It's got to be some technical glitch or something, although the touch is basically the same shape as the iphone 3g! I don't see why there would be a technical issue, but maybe Apple will announce it in a few weeks.

SERIOUSLY disappointed. I sold my 1G in anticipation of a 3G with a camera and microphone. I was also expecting a 16gb model at $200, not an 8gb model. It was a pretty bad miscalculation on my part. I think I may go for a 16gb 2G and move on to a Zune HD for music.
I want to believe though that apple had manufacturing problems and in two months we'll see ipod touches with cameras and a 16gb at $200.

...maybe an iPod "Touch S" or something? I hope, but I really think if we were getting one on the Touch, it would be here for this keynote.
The Nano can record video, and the 3rd gen Touch cannot
I am so confused, I don't know where to start. Even if they are trying to gain a bigger market with the Nano, since it is so affordable - I would still include it in the top of the line iPod (iPod Touch).
...this update makes no sense!!!

I really hope they didn't think that.
They'd have to be stupid.
No one pays a monthly bill just to use a damn camera. Not to mention one that doesn't even have flash, which comes standard on many cheap phones.

Given all the cases we've seen with camera holes, I prefer to believe the production problem theory for no camera on the Touch. Steve won't release anything that's not "perfect". I'll bet the curving back of the Touch meant a smooth surface for the lens could not be achieved, leaving a "bump" to get scratched and nicked.
A lower price and 64gb model are the only significant improvements. My current Touch is fast enough.

Exactly. Some people on this forum think that's why.
I hope those production screw-ups were true and Apple decides to release a iPod touch with a video camera sometime before Christmas.

...definitely logical from a design point, but someone who is Head of Sales for iPods, must have been away on a long long vacation - this makes no sense for the Touch

That's what I'm speculating also, which is why there's no way I'll be updating any time soon.
But they kinda set themselves up for downfall on this one.
People who realize how substandard this update is are angry, and the people who buy into this "update" will be angry when a newer version with a camera comes out not too far into the future (hopefully).
Bah. Point is -- this update was extremely disappointing.

I understand that this could grow the Nano market in sales, but any minor update to the Nano could grow the Nano sales market. Just including the FM Radio would help Nano Sales. The iPod Touch market will not grow because of this, and the app store will not grow. The app store would benefit tremendously, and be a huge plus if the Touch came with a camera w/video capabilities!

People go and buy more nanos, nanos sell as much as touches, then update both. Imagine if Apple had updated the Touches with camera. People would go and buy touches only. Why? Because you can do more with a touch rather than with a nano. So Apple would have to stop producing nanos cause they wouldn't sell as much as the other ipods.

Okay I'm seriously tired of seeing everyone on the forum cry like 6 month old babies when there bottle is taken away. So what if there is no camera The new one with a camera would have essentially been an iphone without cellular capabilitys and gps because everyones going to say that too. so i see why they didnt do it. If you don't want one for the spec bump and all you wanted for a camera...that means you were essentially going to spend 300$ on a camera then GO BUY A REGULAR CAMERA! I'm probably going to get the new touch for the 64gb cause I just needed a new ipod for MUSIC not just a camera. My reasoning is simple. I'm going to assume you have an ipod touch aready or you sold it for the new one otherwise you wouldn't be complaining, but besides your money you missed out on a camera and a mic? They include a headset with mic so your not even missing that. Tell me if you were going to spend 300 at the least to upgrade at this point For the camera and the mic Why not buy a regular camera. Or better yet a 1st gen iphone without contract off ebay for around the same price at 16gbs. Honestly I don't see the point of complaining when you have either of these options. Maybe if you can convey your argument in an intellegent way or explain why its such a big deal to you i would understand but i dont. Well yeah, they are mostly for music but since they evolved, why should we expect less? They have so many options and Apple is adding about 5 new options every year(number random). Is this right with these abilities to continue to think that they are meant for music. They used to but not anymore. Since last year Apple is heading ipod touch mostly for gaming. So i would disagree with your opinion. :)

You are totally missing it Kwats. The iPod Touch is a multimedia player, not just an MP3 player.
There are a ton of reasons why the consumer and Apple would include a camera (w/video recording and a mic)...
...I wonder what the app store would gain from a camera in a Touch. I wonder if the user would upload more video to youtube. I wonder if the mic could be used as a recording device. I wonder how much freakin' money Apple would make off the app store if the new Touch had a camera w/video recording and a mic.

Adding the new features to the nano (don't forget the slightly larger screen) and not to the Touch will cause iPod customers to think twice before buying a Touch. Apple could sell way more nanos at its price-point than Touches at its price-point.
What I mean by "bringing the nano closer to the same level" is that by adding these premium features to the nano, it brings the nano's perceived value closer to that of the Touch's. It's not just a nano anymore- it's a nano.
As I said, the decision between buying a nano and a Touch just got a little harder to make.

Yes, because some people simply wish to spend less money.
Which do you think Apple makes more profit on: a $150 Nano or a $300 Touch? Why wouldn't Apple want people to buy up? And yes Apple decides to leave people in a quandary over whether to spend less money to get a feature they really want.
Is it a 3rd gen Touch? Or is it a 2nd gen with more memory? Did anything else change that wasn't just a software update?

I know everyone has seen all of the cases out there that were made for the 'Ipod touch 3G'. I though that after today's disappointment, I'd look back at those fond memories. I looked at this site:
http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/07/06/another-ipod-touch-case-with-a-hole-in-it/
What I found strange is that it seems like both the ipod touch and the nano cases are from the same source. Why, then, are the nano cases accurate to what was released and the ipod touch cases not? This is the closest thing to convincing I could get for the idea that there was a glitch and the cameras will come.
I guess the question is, when? I've been waiting since the 1G release for a capacity large enough (aka >64GB ) . Frankly, why do I care about a camera on my ipod? I don't use my phone's much and if I can't connect to the internet all the time anyway, then there isn't much upload value. All the same, if I knew for a fact that touches w/ cases are coming out, then I would definitely wait. I feel like I'm at a casino saying I can win just one more hand...

...good point Surely. I agree with most of what you say.
The only thing is that you are not mentioning, is what this could to do the Touch's sales and app store income in general. I agree that the price point is lowered for a Nano. More importantly, Apple on the whole - is looking to make there iPods keep a steady income as their percentages have gone down in 'iPod' sales as of lately.
The perceived value is geared towards the target audience, and that is where I can see your point. Apple would definitely like to increase sales in the 'iPod sector'. Especially, at the price point to target the younger audience they market to...
But, in reality, Apple can do both. They can make the iPod have steady sales with the release of a 'videocamera Nano' and also increase sales of the Touch by having camera/videocamera/mic. So, if I were to make any sense of this in my right mind, I would think that they are gearing towards marketing this feature of camera & video altogether... I guess.
But, on the other hand, there is a huge Marketing Oppurtunity for Apple to include a camera w/video & a mic on the Touch right now!!! I mean huge! This would be very innovative for Apple to include this because of all the secondhand features this would entice. SDK developers would be going through the roof creating apps for video & pics. It would be a huge source of income for the Touch & app store!
The Touch with a camera w/video & a mic is a flat-out...a huge "want" from an iPod Touch user. Yes, we want 64GB, but a we are searching for the Touch to be even better. We expect better performance in a new update. A camera/videocamera would be a start of a big feature, then may be one day down the road... a GPS. The Touch users were looking for something more...
Apple lead everyone to believe this is the "funnest iPod ever"... Well, I beg to differ now...
I am still searching for the right answer - the only one that I am pondering... is production/development issues...

Sep 9, 2009, 06:03 PM
Oh no .....
The iPod Touch has WiFi and the nano doesn't....
They put a cheap camera in the nano that only takes poor quality video as a gimmick to differentiate the nano from the nano clones. People who purchase the new iPod touch should be glad they aren't stuck with the same video camera that's in the nano. Then all the complaints would be "why can't we have the same camera that's in the iPhone and the ability to take still shots."
If a camera and internal mike mean that much to you, get an iPhone.

here's a solution, just buy a real camera, which is alot better quality than what the touch would have had...the iPod touch will always be a special iPod, but still just an iPod nonetheless, so you really shouldn't care that your digital multimedia player doesn't have a camera, because it isn't even necessary in the first place, we are seriously just talking cell phone quality at best here. The only thing it would lead to would be an increase in crappy, pointless youtube vids.

As I said, the decision between buying a nano and a Touch just got a little harder to make.
Eh. Not for me it didn't.
I want a touch based interface and high storage capacity. Where is the overlap there?

Seriously, how many times are you in a case where a cheaper model of a product has lots of features the more expensive model doesn't?
This is a pretty bad situation.
I totally prefer the iPod Touch with camera, video and FM radio with old prices!!

They popped in a new processor and a new hard drive. That's absolutely it.
Can the touch make phone calls without wifi?
that one major feature is what distinguishes the two in a major way not a camera, gps, compass, etc.
I can't tell you how disappointed I am with no camera on the Touch...I am SUPER bummed and WILL NOT be buying the new touch......it would make perfect sense to have a camera on the touch!!!
Brb emailing Steve Jobs to make an iPod touch with a cellphone, camera, GPS, UMTS/GSM quad band support (free though god forbid we have to ACTUALLY pay for using AT&T's service), microphone and MMS.....Oh wait....thats the iPhone (That was dripping sarcasm if you didn't pick up on it). Believe me when I say that I'm NOT looking forward to a $80 bill every month for two years but hey that's just the way life is you get what you pay for and your paying for an iPod in the end not a device that is so close to the iPhone apple starts wondering why there selling both. Suck it up and buy an iPhone and stop asking for features that aren't going to happen.
Apple lead everyone to believe this is the "funnest iPod ever"... Well, I beg to differ now...
I am still searching for the right answer - the only one that I am pondering... is production/development issues...
You can't do half the stuff on a nano (or any ipod for the matter)as you can on the iPod touch. Quit your complaining it IS the funniest iPod ever even if you can't get your little camera.

All this desperate baying for a gimmick is pretty ridiculous. If you want an all-in-one device buy an iPhone. If you can't, get a better cell phone. They all have cameras of equally mediocre quality and you'll have to carry both an iPod and cell anyway if you don't have an iPhone.

You act like you can't keep ahold of your money tell me really is it such a burdan to have 300$ in your pocket right now?
I'm not totally depressed about no cameras in the 3rd gen ipod touch, but my cell phone camera is crap, my actual point and shoot is the size of a brick, so I can't just slip that one in my pocket.
Then again, we all agree that the iPod Touch is a chick magnet, so any excuse for girls to take photos of themselves on your own iPod....is good. Especially when your friends play with it next and your photo library makes them jealous. ;)

This is a pretty bad situation. It happens in small amounts from time to time (I'm thinking HDD sizes of MacBooks and MacBook Pros some time ago), but not this big of a difference. It makes more sense if we think that the iPod nano and iPod touch are separate products (as opposed to high-end/low-end like the MacBook and MacBook Pro), since the iMac has a camera (and usually has similar/better RAM/HDD) and the Mac Pro doesn't. But even that's far from what we have with the iPods.

Because if it gets to minus one feature between the two it won't matter even more so. Samsung makes phones and an mp3 player but you don't see people bitching about not having a camera and a phone on there mp3 player.

I asked everyone for money for my birthday in August knowing a new 64gb ipod touch was being released. Just realised that it won't have a video camera or microphone and I am so disappointed. I won't be buying the new Ipod Touch. I really really hope that this is an error. I did hear rumours that they had trouble with the cameras in the manufacturing stage and set the first thousands aside! So, fingers crossed, they'll hurry up and sort it out in time for Christmas. If I am doubly disappointed at Christmas, I'll buy another brand instead! Steve Jobs, if you read these posts, please mark up one more very disappointed customer on your chart! Can some Apple employee please give us some hope that all will be fine by Christmas? Be good to get a better battery life and an FM radio to boot to like the new Nano! I simply cannot understand why they have upgraded the little Nano so much when the previous fab model has been out for such a long time. Surely the Ipod Touch deserved the same 5* treatment??

Guys...
Rewind two years.
The 8gb Touch was $299. The 16gb touch was $399. Holy crap guys. Remember that? The Classic was a mere $249. The iPhone launched at $499 before Apple cut it $200 off. Even $299 was steep for many because WinMo smartphones usually were $299 retail but with at least $100 off because carriers ALWAYS offer discounts (who ever sells at full price anyway?).
The Nano always sat at that 149 and 199 pricepoint with the 3rd gen.
Rewind 1 year now
8gb touch is now $229, 16gb Touch $299.
Why the hell would you get the Nano at this point? $199? Seriously? For $30 more you get a full fledged smartphone minus the phone. You get PC-like capabilities.
Now today.
8gb touch is now $199. The nano maintains its advantage in PRICE. If you want 8gb of storage you can still get it for $149.
The nano is losing its advantage because the touch is so cheap now. The recent buy a mac get an iPod promotions featured the touch only so people are more and more into the touch.
The nano was once just a slimmed down version of the classic, but people don't give a crap anymore. They see no reason to get it. Some people get the iPod Touch simply as a computer/gaming device. I had only 1gb of music on mine and another 1gb of apps. I could care less about the music with the touch. The only way to keep the Nano alive is to make a majorly expensive touch (the 32gb for $299) and keep the cheap one at small capacities.
If you add a camera and what not, the Nano is DEAD. That's why they jumped into product differentiation and introduced new features for the Nano.
You know that's just the way it has to be.
Think of it this way. For so many years now, you've been able to get an iPod for $249, or a nano for $149/$199. The Touch has fallen from $299 to $229 to now $199. This has encroached into the other iPod's space with storage space also growing for the touch. Thus, the only way to keep them apart is product differentiation. You can't give the Touch everything. I would've loved for the touch to have everything. I sold my 1G Touch banking on the 3G Touch getting a camera. Am I sad? Yeah. Can I understand why Apple did things the way they did? Yeah. It makes sense from a business perspective.
To those of you who remember Sony ERicsson introducing their cameraphones. The 2MP K750. Then the new Walkman series. The W810i had everything. Best in class camera, flash, autofocus, and the walkman player. EDGE (no 3G back 2005/2006), etc. Hey, it was great. Then Sony realize dthey had to differentiate. K/C series were cameras. Autofocus for them. W series were Walkman phones. Great music, but toned down cameras. You can't have EVERYTHING.
The same with the Nokia N-series. Nokia fans are craving for a new N95. The N97 they say is years late. Why can't it have Xenon flash, capacitive touch, 8MP camera, etc etc? The N95 was the last "do-it-all" phone and Nokia knows this. It has to separate its N-series so there isn't just 1 phone to do it all.
We're at that point where Apple realizes it HAS to differentiate its products. We can't please everyone. It's a time where we'll be upset, but you have to understand it maeks sense for the business.

well... they lost my money :(
...and when it comes to product differentiation. It is the network that is the difference. The voice/data capabilities being provided by AT&T are key...
Adding a camera w/video & a mic would spark a huge market in itself, then trickle down to more income for the app store.
The other thing is - Apple is a leader & innovator. And, if they do not adopt the iPod Touch to have a camera w/video... they will fall behind. I guarantee it.

I could go on & on...
Kwats...just think for once in your life!
I've thought about all the possiblities okay I'm not an ignorant idiot like you probably think i am it's just apple can do whatever they want and if they didnt think the touch was ready people have to deal with it. We can complain all we want but it won't change anything right away. Yeah it could have been great but for all the things you just listed above except the apps. The Nano does that. I'm done arguing i appreciate your opinions but i just will never cry over spilled milk. life will go on without a camera on the touch and it will probably come in the future just enjoy the 2g/3g for now.
My last point is most of this was based of speculations and random "real" pics on the internet none of it was confirmed so really it wasn't a loss.

This is an interesting discussion. My theory is that Apple kept the camera off the iPod Touch to help iPod Nano sales. Apple needs to think about their entire product line, not just the Touch. The Touch has exploded over the past year, and I bet that the Nano is not doing nearly as well. Apple needed to put some things in the Nano that the Touch does not have to generate some excitement for the Nano product line.
Many of you said that Apple lost a sale to you when they left the camera off the Touch. That's true, but realize that they also gained sales to other people who don't want a Touch, but like the idea of a camera in their iPods. Again, Apple is trying to make sales off their entire line, not just the Touch.
Apple also knows that those of us complaining now about no camera will be in line with our wallets out next year when the Touch does get a camera. In the meantime, they will be happy to sell a truckload of Nanos.

There's no feasible way Apple would want people to spend LESS money on a cheaper project. If Apple could get every potential iPod Nano customer to buy an iPod Touch, it would do so, and make a ton more money off it. Why? Because generally, the higher cost of the product, the higher profit margin made.

....But they can't. Not every consumer is in the market for a Touch. So, they are trying to make the Nano line improved enough to make potential Nano buyers sitting on the sidelines jump in and buy a Nano.
The Touch sales will still be there because of the things that make the Touch unique....App Store, Wi-Fi. Then, when the Touch sales get a little slower next year, BOOM.....here comes the camera and off we go again.... :)

Would you rather have more capacity or a camera?

The only reason I would have even considered a new Touch would have been if it had a pretty decent camera and gps in it. I don't understand why Apple put places in their Iphoto, without offering a way to utilize it. I mean without spending the coin on a Iphone or a high dollar gps camera that is.

Camera. Definitely.
My cell phone is Net10. It is all I can afford. I pay $15 a month for minutes I don't use. My phone is the HIGH END MODEL that Net10 sells. A Motorola something something slider with a 1.3MP camera and MP3/AAC playback. No video. And no games unless you count the horrible Java crap they preloaded on it. No App Store either.
Some of us can't afford $80 a month for cell plans we don't need. If I could buy ala carte, where stuff was dolled out in slices for reasonable prices where I could get a lot of data, and a small amount of texting and minutes maybe. But you can't. They don't even allow the prepaid plans on the iPhone. AT&T wants you to pay more than you'll use because that's how they make money.
I want an iPod touch that has a camera that does video and photos so I don't have to use my cell phone. Why? Because my cell phone is specifically designed to NOT WORK with Macs. USB, Bluetooth, it includes both, but does not even announce its presense when connected to a Mac. I have to take the MicroSD card out, put it in its adapter, place that in my Garmin, plug my Garmin into my MacBook, browse the disk to find the photos and manually drag them to my desktop to get to them, then eject the disk, take the card out of the adapter and place it back in the phone. That's not intuition. That's something you should never have to do as an end user. Ever. If I had known about this little feature, I would have stuck with the phone I had.
I want a touch with all the stuff my phone doesn't do, or doesn't do well, because I don't want to carry around a half a dozen devices. I have a Kodak Z700. It is huge. I don't want to carry that around to take simple snapshots of silly crap I see throughout the day. A touch would be perfect for that. It also takes video, but do I want to carry that huge thing just for video? No.
The less devices I have to carry, the better. Since I can't afford to waste my money on an iPhone cell plan, a touch in conjunction with my $15/mo phone is my only option to get as much goodness of an iPhone as I can get.
I need a touch because I need a PDA like device. I want the WiFi for when I can use it. I want to be able to take notes, all that stuff. I'd much rather have a phone in my touch for the simplicity of being able to sync the photos and videos I take to my computer with one step. Instead of the half a dozen I have to put up with as it is.
My sisters have iPhone's. They also have three jobs to pay for their iPhone's.

when i saw the improvemments on the nano, i thought WOW! apple has really outdone themselves. then i saw the touch and evreything turned around. this has been the worst thing apple has done. it doesnt make any sense at all!apple just lost so many sales to the Zune HD.they lost mine. i was gonna buy an ipod touch 3g, but am holding off now. it is just stupid. maybe steve is still on some aneshtesia ( bad spelling).
On the flip side, i am hoping this was because of a manufacturing problem. if apple had a camera in mind and maybe other features too for the ipod, then the camera didn't work. they wouldn't release all the other features, then add on the camera after a month or two. it would be too complicated to manufacture. i think they decided to hold off altogether, and release it in a month or two with everything. that would make sense from the manufacturing standpoint.
what i dont get is that apple had a speed bump on the 32gb and 64gb version of the ipod touch, and are ready to sell it. if they were planning the ipods with the camera, where did they get these from. they wouldn't be able to manufacture these at the last second. either they never planned a camera for it, or they manufacturing problem happened a while ago.
another thing is that they dont even call the new ipod touches the 3rd-generation, from what i have heard. maybe they are planning to release the "third-generation" later this year.
lastly, steve said "this is our holiday lineup" this indicates there wont be changes to the touch any time soon. looks like no camera for a while. Maybe WWDC will hold the new touch!

Its great to see the nano has a camera, but disappointing to see the touch without one.
If I already had a touch, I wouldn't be upgrading, but as I don't, I'll be buying one soon.
I just can't decide, 8gb for a cheaper price, but without the improved hardware and a very large amount of space for media, or the 32gb touch, expensive, but with lots of improvements.

From my nano point of view, Apple is a genius. They didn't just add a camera, FM radio, and pedometer. They added great video software for the camera, and an FM radio that does RDS and can cache radio so you can pause it. They also put in a pedometer that adds value to your nike+ use if you use your nano while exercising. They've just leapfrogged every player with an FM radio except maybe the Zune HD if you live in an area with many stations broadcasting in HD. I've got a few players that have cameras, but none will be as entertaining as what it's the Nano now.
And yes, it's a shame none of this made it into the Touch. I bought a new iPod though. It's a new gloss blue 16gb engraved nano.

Apple lead everyone to believe this is the "funnest iPod ever"... Well, I beg to differ now...
Okay I give up. what's the funnest iPod now?
There's no feasible way Apple would want people to spend LESS money on a cheaper project. If Apple could get every potential iPod Nano customer to buy an iPod Touch, it would do so, and make a ton more money off it. Why? Because generally, the higher cost of the product, the higher profit margin made.
I agree with that, and add this thought.
I would assume the cost of components are low because of volume on these, but Apple is also trying to push the platform so they can make $$$ in other assets like the Music Store and App store. The App store will generate Money for Apple only by selling products only to the iPhone and ipod touch customers. The nano can only really offer continued sales to Apple through videos / music from the iTunes Music store, completely missing the potential profits form app store sales.
I would imagine that Apple could make slightly less on the sales of the iPod touch up front, expecting / hoping to gain revenue from the App store.

You still have not answered my question. With the lack of the 'rumored' camera, has something taken over as the funnest ipod? Do you now see the nano as more fun?

This thread makes me laugh. It reminds me of when the iPod Touch was first introduced and everyone was complaining that it didn't have Mail, Maps, Weather, etc. All of these Apple apologists came out and said "Cry like a baby! The iPod is ONLY a music player and doesn't need things like Mail! In fact, I wouldn't want Mail on my iPod!"
Later on, Apple releases it.
Now people want a camera in the iPod (and for those that say it doesn't make sense to have one need to have their head examined - the amount of apps on the app store with features for camera based units are vast. There's a whole market of apps iPod Touch users are kept from because it doesn't have a camera.) and people are still saying "Cry like a baby! The iPod doesn't need a camera. It's ONLY a gaming device! In fact, I wouldn't want a camera in my iPod!"
Tell me, Apple apologists, if Apple kept with your view that the iPod Touch should have been limited to playing media - no mail, maps, App store, gaming, PDA like capability, would you still be defending it?
Now, I'm not going to start writing letters to Apple complaining about what I want. Apple is it's own company and can make it's own decisions. But I will say this: I was planning on buying an iPod Touch yesterday, but when I found out it had no camera, I didn't. Apple lost a sale.

I'm also with the people on this site saying that there had to be some sort of last minute (by last minute, I'd say this actually happened weeks ago, because the manufacturing process still takes a good amount of time) glitch that caused the Touch to be introduced without a camera. Like it was said above, there's all these case manufacturers that were spot on with the Nano w/camera case design, but were so far off on the Touch with camera? Not to mention the video (link floating around on MR somewhere..too lazy to find it) of the Touch with camera. A video "could" be faked, but it's a lot harder to fake that than a 'shopped pic, and who would honestly take the time to fake an entire video of a Touch with a camera? Not to mention the teardown photos of the same Touch showing the internals with the camera. I think somewhere something went wrong with the camera modules, and as the release date grew closer, Apple had to say "screw it", and threw the old back on at the last minute to get a product out. I feel that they were going to use the same dimensions as the 2nd gen Touch anyway (same as they did with the iPhone 3GS and 3G), so this "last minute" change to use the old backing wasn't that difficult of a change with such little notice.
That's my $.02, anyway.
Added: Also think that maybe, once the camera problem is sorted, and based on clamoring (if the consumers are vocal enough about it), that Apple may "add" and additional product line around the first of the year to the Touch family... i.e. iPod Touch Photo? iPod Touch Video? An addition to the product line in maybe 32 and 64Gb flavors, but keep the non camera offerings as well. To cater to both markets? Since there are a lot of people that use the Touch as a PDA/in a business environment, there are lots of places and businesses that don't allow cameras on phones/PDA's. Having a camera and non-camera offering might cater to both? I'm not sure how they will spin it/market it, but I feel certain they will introduce an iPod Touch Video before next September. My bet is around the first of the year, to give it enough time for the b***hing about not including it now to die down, and because of the after Christmas money that all the teenagers have received as gifts.

Some would say 'yes', and some would say 'no'... There is no clear favorite now. So, now, you could make it a debate. All n' All, it is nonsense though, I was making a joke at the time because sometimes Apple forgets their previous marketings ploys.
They clearly are going to market the Nano more than the new Touch, because of the big new feature on a Nano. If they market the Touch, and go along with last year's marketing campaign ('the funnest iPod ever') I think Apple will be second guessing themselves...as they should be right now.
Quadra, do you think Apple made a smart move for the new Touch and for the new Nano?

Great post; totally agree. I was set to buy 4 x 64GB iPt's for gifts, but not anymore. Looks like our netbooks will have to continue in their role of portable net devices until someone else puts out a pocket version with the required feature set.

It's because of the manufacturing issues, so they're delaying it on the iPod touch.
What I wanna know is: where are my video effects on my £440.40 iPhone 3GS?

Sure. I see it as a great upgrade on the nano, and a minor speed bump for the iPod Touch lineup. I think expectations for this round of updates were a little high, and artificially inflated by rumor sites (which I don't fault as I like reading them too). I would have liked to see more features in the touch lineup like most everyone.

Dino, people say it all the time. It's ridiculous, and some do not understand - they just want to raise an issue that is really never there. I just let it go... the people who say that usually have previous posts that are ridiculous as the one you see - It is not worth your time...
Altogether, I agree with you, but the people shouting 'get an iPhone' will never stop. ;)

I doubt that will happen. Or else apple would have shown the prototype and stated that the 3rd gen touch (with camera) would be ready by oct or nov. I think it was a strategic move to spur nano sales.
I want to believe though that apple had manufacturing problems and in two months we'll see ipod touches with cameras and a 16gb at $200.

I recently lost my 16 GB 1st Gen. iTouch to a video issue; so I am patiently waiting for the new iTouch 3g to hit the store shelves.
As an upgrade from my 1st Gen. the new 3g has a whole lot to offer.
I am not one for wanting to purchase a new iPod every year - A camera would have been a nice addition, but it isn't something I have really been missing either.
I'm more interested in having my iPod last a good 3 or more years. Lesson learned, I will be spending a the extra $ and getting Apple Care this time around.

Suck it up and buy an iPhone and stop asking for features that aren't going to happen.
Not everyone needs the phone part. What if your work gives a you blackberry that's already paid for but you still want the itouch features? Just get the iphone is not the answer.

I agree with you. It may indeed be a strategic move to get consumers to buy iPod Nano's. ...then at a later date, they will release the camera w/video & a mic. So, they basically get a ton of users who buy both (this it totally my assumption...I could be wrong).
I really believe this feature of camera/video/mic has to come to the Touch. It is a want an, a oppurtunity to add income to the app store. Steve Jobs' recent response means nothing to me. He claims the Touch users did not want the "feature." He is known for doing things of this nature - I truly think this is to spark Nano sales since, on the whole, they were declining in their sales percentages.

I would like to hear a side from one of the iPod Touch 3rd gen case manufacturers about this... I am kind of surprised there has not been any public messages about the circumstance
It may be production issues. But, who really knows...
