The rumored iTunes 9 was announced (http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2009/09/09itunes.html) today at Apple's "It's Only Rock and Roll" media event. iTunes 9 brings multiple new features, including iPhone app organization, "Genius Mixes", expanded media syncing options, and much more."iTunes 9 is a great iTunes release, with innovative features that make using iTunes better than ever and iTunes content richer than ever," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "iTunes LP, for example, lets artists share more of their creativity with fans and gives music lovers the feeling of being immersed in an entire album with art, lyrics, liner notes, photos and videos."Genius Mixes is a new feature that leverages the Genius information gathered since the launch of this feature with iTunes 8 (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/09/09/itunes-8-hd-tv-shows-grid-view-genius-playlists-nbc/) at last year's September media event. Genius Mixes can play an endless mix of songs from your iTunes library that "go great together." iTunes 9 will automatically generate 12 of these mixes by default, and more can be created by the user.
Device syncing has also improved in the latest version of iTunes. Genres and artists can be selectively synchronized along with playlists, and photos can now be synced by Faces and Events.
Home sharing is another new feature that allows iTunes media to be copied and shared among 5 authorized computers in the same household, with settings available to make copying new purchases automatically. All authorized computers are visible in iTunes in the Shared category in the Source list.
iTunes 9 includes the iPhone app organization feature that was previously rumored. Replicas of the home screen pages of a connected iPhone appear within the Applications tab where apps can be selected for syncing and removal and dragged and dropped to appear on the desired home screen page.

Additionally, the iTunes store interface has been re-designed to allow for easier browsing and now offers iTunes LPs – albums with additional content such as lyrics, photos, liner notes, and more. Movies also get a bump from extra content through iTunes Extras that include additional features, graphical chapter selection, and more. Finally, Apple is now offering 30,000 pre-cut ringtones from major music labels, priced at $1.29 each.
iTunes 9 is a free download (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/) and will be available later today.

Awesome. New place for the pissed off people to run too.
iPod Touch buyers, especially those that recently dumped their iPod Touch's have some reason to be upset though, I suppose. But, it's all rumors.

Like the new look in that "activity window" thing on top. The color is still ugly (I was hoping for something QTX-ish), but at least it is now tolerable. Oh, and it isn't 64bit. And it's eating about 120MB of RAM. And the install took over ~230MB. So much for slimming down. Oh, and that iTunes LP thing? You need a 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo or better to use it. Yikes.
And. It's.......shiny. The whole window has the gradient look, but....it generally looks more metallic and less matte than the other windows. Thanks Apple, we really needed yet another UI style.

I guess I'm waiting.
The new white background looks really awful, and for some strange reason it completely neglects the "Disc |x| of |y|" tag.. my 2 disc albums are ****ed up... what were they thinking?!

When I saw the home sharing, I thought... "Finally!"
But then I was thinking, what about between accounts on the same computer? Right now, there are a few ways to either share everything, including apps, ratings, but playlists, but it's not exactly elegant... and over time I've realized that I want to share most, but not all of this information. In fact, I've gone back to simply syncing both iPhones to one user account.
Will this feature make this better? If so, will I still have to duplicate all the music (copy?) or is it smart enough to "just work".
We'll see.

+1
As for someone who mentioned how they would do that without having Blu-ray drives on Mac's, my Mac Pro has a Blu-ray drive in the bottom slot. Physical data is burned which is great for backing up libraries. Final Cut also support Blu-ray. Apple is releasing new iMacs soon, adding Blu-ray drives as an option to Double-Layer drives isn't a big deal, just add the option. Having to boot into Windows 7 to watch Blu-ray media is a slap in the face to OS X users. C'mon Apple, Blu-ray will not eat into your iTunes sales, iTunes media doesn't even compare to Blu-ray quality.

Apple has got me so ticked off, I'll probably put my energy into getting a 1-G iPhone cheap and forget buying these ho-hum iPod touches. That way, Apple won't get a penny and I'll probably save money.
I need a camera, and I need a mike and I don't want to pay AT&T fees. I also need them soon. I thought I would get that in the new touches. Instead, Apple is giving the tiny Nano more features but not the iPod touch. Why? With that tiny 2.2-inch Nano screen you can't see much of what you've taken and the equally tiny battery isn't likely to last long in video mode.
What's going on? If Apple has production problems with camera-equipped touches, they should say so, give us the details of new touch, and a release date. This cult of secrecy is such a pain. You'd think they were the Kremlin circa 1935. Both have a cult-like obsession with not admitting mistakes.
Still worse is the possibility that Apple wants to build high walls between its products, doling out features in odd ways to fit a marketing straight-jacket. The iPhone would be for work and business for those with the money. The touch is for games but not recreation, hence the lack of a camera and the boring length of game promotion today. Color touch users fat and flabby couch potatoes. The Nano is for mostly outdoor recreation (camera and Nike added), but has nothing that lets you get work done. If so, it's stupid move.
To add insult to injury, I just checked the specs on the new touches. The 8 gig model ships with the old-style earphones not the remote earphones and without a plastic dock adapter. Total saving for Apple? Probably about 25 to 50 cents. Cost to customers who don't want to pull their touch out of their pocket every time they pause music: $30 That stinks. Heck, even the cheap little $59 Shuttle ships with remote earphones. While Jobs was gone, the niggling little bean counters seem to have been running Apple. This is the unfortunate result.
I hate companies that treat their customers as if they were stupid, and that's precisely how I feel Apple is treating its customers now.

Is it just me, but are the gradients on iTunes 9 ********* dreadful?
There's a dirty dark line that runs right along the top of my version here, and it's really noticeable on the time ticker bar in the top "info window" section.
If I tilt my iMac forward as far as it'll go it's really, really noticeable.

No, itunes media organization is something new
I turned it on, and it reorganized my itunes music folder. Music, TV shows and Movies are now separate. Also, there is now a folder called "Automatically Add to iTunes". I confirmed any files copied to that folder get automatically added to itunes and removed from the folder.
I can't wait to try this on my huge movie collection at home.
This is a welcomed feature. Now if they'd only let us backup iTunes purchases to an external USB drive... my current method of using Applescripts to copy playlists misses the SD versions of HD downloads.

I have to agree with people, the new iTunes doesn't look good. Doesn't fit in with the rest of mac apps. The news options for syncing are great though. I can't seem to get calendars to sync though. iTunes says I have no calendars, even though I have 4. Is it iTunes first bug?

No, no-one is asking for a kaleidoscopic of colour ... but iTunes 9 does NOT look more modern than iTunes 8 by a long shot. In fact, scrap more modern ... it doesn't even look as PROFESSIONAL, and that's the most worrying thing.

Same here. I clicked "download iTunes 9" from the Apple website, but the download didn't say "update," instead it said it was replacing only files that are updated. My iTunes still isn't version 9. Oh well, I'm moving on to the iPhone update now. I'll wait for the iTunes update to appear inside iTunes when I click "check for updates."

Since closed captioning for TV shows and movies seems to be the exception, rather than the rule, at Apple, I wonder if iTunes 9 will make this more of a priority. I'd buy a lot more shows and movies through iTunes if they had closed captioning. Just a handful of shows do. I can still hear, but it can be sketchy (I'm partially deaf), and the closed captioning really helps me a lot.
Until this happens, it's just hard to get excited about iTunes, unless it's about the app store (how about cleaning out all the duplicates from the store?).

Well I guess you don't understand how the feature works, you can have 5 computers authorized on one itunes account, and download and share any media, music, and apps across all 5 of those accounts. Although this was an attempt at satisfying the many of iphone users, including myself, who have been completely dumbfounded by the lack of iphone app organization through itunes thus far, this new iTunes 9 iphone organization ability is a far cry from the usually feature rich apple ideas.
It is nice that I now have the ability to move applications and pages around from iTunes, however, it is the same tedious process used to organize applications from the iphone itself. Where is the Auto-organization by category, name, etc? Where are folders?
This, to me, seems almost like a slap in the customers face. We heard you consumer so here is organization slapped together at the last minute. This is like a term paper for an english class, written the night before the due date.
It is not like people have not been willing to offer apple suggestions, ideas, comments or concerns regarding application organization. There have even been demonstrations online of wonderful organization methods. Apple executives KNOW what we want!
This attempt is pathetic at best and will not due in my book, as I am sure many others will agree. I hope this does not come off as though i am not grateful for the new feature addition, however, you cannot sit here and tell me that someone in the apple design team did not mention on how feature lacking this application management was at the time of creation. This is SO un-apple.

Wow, I just installed it and I'm shocked! I think the grey top bar is ugly, too much shine in the gradient. Why not let it look the same as other OS X windows? Also the white @ grid view is not good choice. :( I will try to put version 8 back, I don't like this new one.
I don't understand why companies like Apple and Sony[1] keeps adding minor 'enhancements' like extra glow and shine on icons, just to add something.
[1] Have you guys seen the new 3.0 firmware of Playstation3? They added a lot of glow and bevel on the same icons, and made them uglier. It's like the basic lesson in design: don't anything extra if it doesn't add any value.
Wow, I can't believe they removed the handy slider to adjust thumbnail size in the grid view. :S

This is most likely due to the design of Windows. You can't use 32-bit drivers (i.e. the iPhone or iPod) on the 64-bit OS. They probably had to make iTunes all 64-bit just to make iPhone and iPod stuff work on Windows x64.

I wonder if PowerPC Mac users should even bother downloading iTunes 9.
A lot of the new features have steep requirements like 2Ghz Intel Core Duo and every iTUNES update seems to make it more sluggish and more bloated.
With all the the Dual 2.0GHz or faster G5's that Apple sold, I imagine those people are gonna once again be very unhappy camper as Apple continues to support less powerful Intel Macs over their most powerful G5s that were ridiculously expensive.

I don't know if this is new, but 3 finger swipes can be used for moving forwards or backwards in the store now. And it seems like multiclutch gestures work now too. This is on SL, and I've only tested it with my Universal Gestures in Multiclutch, not any iTunes specific ones.
Edit: If you set 3 finger swipes left/right to the shortcuts for the next or previous, they only work when you're actually viewing a playlist. In the store, they're still back and forwards. I love this! Makes the update worthwhile for me. I love me some multiclutch! :D

Did anyone else lose their shopping cart? I can't find the option to turn it on.
 Me too! I like the "add to cart" but now I have to click the drop down arrow and then Wish List.
Why is it called Wish List? Shopping cart makes more sense in my opinion. I'm not wishing for them.
Anyway, everything else seems great so far. I'm liking the new layout actually.

I know I'm whining, but if I bought a movie from itunes in the past (I have spent more than $100 but less than $1000 on them) any chance I can get the itunes extras?
I think the extras are a great move. The "commentaries" are something I really miss from watching movies on itunes instead of DVDs. I hope commentaries are actually included, not just dumb pictures and games, however.

Anyone know if Apple has finally released a version of iTunes that is supported on Windows XPx64? I'm still on a hacked version 8.0.2.
You should be looking for a used iPhone 3G. The iPhone 1G has the crappy low resolution camera in it.
Instead, Apple is giving the tiny Nano more features but not the iPod touch. Why? With that tiny 2.2-inch Nano screen you can't see much of what you've taken...
My first digital camera had a one inch LCD and it was useable. I certainly had an easier time with later cameras with larger LCDs, but the first one did it's job quite fine.
and the equally tiny battery isn't likely to last long in video mode.
Apple specs say 5 hours. It's that what the playback time was on the iPhone when it first came out? It was the playback time on the first couple generations of Video iPods, too.
What's going on? If Apple has production problems with camera-equipped touches, they should say so, give us the details of new touch, and a release date.
Why? So people will completely ignore the products they just introduced and wait for the next version?
iTunes 9 supports aacPlus streams now! I'm pretty sure 8 didn't have this. Now I can stream GrooveSalad at 48 kpbs and it sounds awesome :D
Cool.

Seriously, some folk are deluded.
It's not a gloss effect, it runs the entire length of the application ... it's merely more noticeable in the song info window.
It's a gradient issue, it's not a "gloss effect". It's a big, dark, manky bar ffs.
It is most definitely a glossy effect. Check the loading "bar" in Safari or any other application made for OS X in the past 2 years. It's just a glossy effect, no need to get your panties in a bunch.

Application Organizing deleted more then half of my applications most of which were paid applications. I know I can get them all back for free but it is EXTREMELY frustrating. First impressions:
Goddamn, that "gradient" in the title window is annoying. I can't believe someone at Apple has been using this for months and not said "Goddamn, that gradient in the title window is annoying".
There is a black background in many of the windows. Cover Flow, for example. Why the bright white in the grid view?
Being able to sync by genre, etc has been a feature I wanted for years.
I still don't like how the Itunes toolbar is "clickthrough". What I mean is that, even when Itunes is not the front application (no focus), the play/next/etc buttons all accept clicks.
I guess we have to wait for Itunes X for 64bit-ness.

The loading bar, by which I assume you mean the little two tone grey section when a webpage is loading, is indeed split in two ... but it doesn't run into the address bar or appear on the other "silver" parts of the application window.
Sorry, in my opinion it's a bug ... there's no way it's a "gloss effect", I've seen better "effects" on far inferior systems in previous years.

Ugly white backgrounds apps, movies, podcasts etc.
Podcasts and Videos are a standard size and not able to change the icon size
Play and next buttons look unfinished and a little bit iconized on the top.

You can change the icon size.
On the grid view, go to the menu View --> Grid View --> Show Header.
There you go. Choose categories and controls for the icon size!

But before I couldn't share apps between my wife and I even though we're both authorized on each other's computers. Before if I, say pulled Bejeweled from her and stuck it in my library it would toss out an "this application cannot be installed on this device" error.
That's probably because you and her are using different iTunes accounts. If you share one account (like I have always done), both devices always could download and use the same apps.

Here is my opinion on all of this-
First I like the look of the new iTunes, IDK why but I do.
Second, to get Genius Mixes you have to update Genius in the Store menu
Third, I agree with Apple not giving cameras to the touch. Apple needs to keep the iPhone and the iPod touch separate. If the iPod touch is everything the iPhone is without the phone, then it will deter some people from switching to it. Why go out and switch to a new iPhone and get stuck with an ungodly bill when you can keep your GoPhone and buy and buy and iPod Touch with the same features for nearly the same price? It may suck for people that don't wanna get iPhones but its life. That is why they released the touch after the iPhone, so people went out and bought the iPhone. Its business.Remember, Apple is a company trying to get money. There marketing strategy has always been the best in the industry so I trust them for the most part.
As for the new Nano's: I was going to buy a Flip but now im getting a Nano!
Just my take, everyone has there own opinions.

Why would iTunes 9 still be 32 bit when all other native mac apps are 64 bit? I can't understand why they would not have re-written (or adapted) iTunes to a 64 bit vers. If you look in activity monitor at the CPU tab, under "Kind" column it clearly says that all other programs running in snow leopard are 64 bit, while the iTunes 9 is 32 bit still. I can't understand this, it seems very un-apple. With some of the new artwork, coverflow views, and videos, it seems that a 64 bit app would be very useful. I am very pleased with the performance improvements in 64 bit versions of other apps in Snow Leopard. It would only seem logical that iTunes be updated or adapted to 64 bit as well. Doubtful that they will change that in any incremental 9.x vers of iTunes. Seems like they missed their chance. Do we have to wait until v. 10 for iTunes to take advantage of Snow Leopard?

horrid,
lost all of its personality. the layout has no flow and we're back to little weenie interface element of 1999. Why make interface elements (horizontal scroll bars) so small? whats the point. and the top artist showcase area, whats up with the layout, no flow at all. one cool thing, you can click on an info icon thats visible if you hover over an artist, clicking this icon allows you to purchase and preview without leaving the home page. the app seems more responsive (at the moment) so maybe the new design was the trade off for more speed but i doubt it. too minimalist and very poor layout. but to apples defense, its not an easy job laying out all that info.
Edit: alright alright, it isnt THAT bad. the movie pages have some nice touches to make things easier to navigate and your personal music "Browse" navigation mode is a lot more streamlined.

for those who are interested. i'm feeling a significant performance boost with large libraries (mine is 383GB). iTunes seems to load a lot faster and clicking between songs is without delay as it occasionally was in 8. However seems to be a problem with scrolling? and there seems to be an increased amount of memory used (400mb real memory) im sure i remember iTunes 8 using a lot less.
on a side note i wish it wasn't white in the grid view :(

No, you're not alone. I actually quite like it. True, it has a different gradient, but iTunes is it's own application, not an OS element; I don't think it needs to integrate perfectly with the "look" of SL. About the only thing I don't like is that white background on the grid view - man that's harsh.

Make sure you have a widescreen- because if you used the column view- better plan on all of it being used!! 2 versions back of iTunes is when they should have stopped. Why would someone think that many columns- instead of the old 'browse' in column view that used to be available (and was via a hack until today)- I have no idea. I hope someone finds a way to put the artist and album columns back on the top half fast so myself- and many others -don't have to have all 24" of my monitor used up so I can browse my library with the information I need to see when I do.

Actually, you should be able to. iTunes will ask to enable Home Sharing, and you have to input the Apple ID to share, and then enter the same password on the other account/computer.
So, you are correct in stating that this feature will allow families to share apps if they use different Apple IDs. However, it's not exactly changing and allowing apps on more than one device, since in the past, using 1 ID was a simple way to share apps between family members.
