Interesting; I'm waiting for the jailbreak and still using the tethering & MMS hack, go figure....

I assume this breaks tethering? I don't really need it anymore, though I did use it quite a bit this summer. It does come in handy in a pinch. I guess there is always NetShare or JB.

They need an option for requiring a passcode to turn off the phone or to turn on airplane mode. This would keep thieves from turning the device off, which would prevent contact from being made with MobileMe, unless they used a Faraday cage or similar. But honestly now...

So nothing was overwhelming, but from the stand point of iTunes and the iPhone, I am satisfied. Secondly, I think I am going to go pick me up a new Nano. Not like I need it, but just because.

Of course I'm not going to be the one to actually test whether the benm.at hack is broken with this update or not....

so i'll wait patiently while someone else tests that, thank you very much.

I'm hoping this 3.1 also includes some APIs which I heard a while back give special tie-ins to the video camera and some other hardware features so some of these devs can update their apps. cough*i'mtalkingtoyouQikdevs*cough

My guess is that 3.1 will break tethering (which I need, at least until the people at the Deathstar provide a supported solution).

My question is whether I can continue to use iPhone OS 3.0 with iTunes 9?

Hi,

Update my iPhone 3G 16GB. Tethering option was still there. I turned it on and attempted to connect from iMac. Failure message appeared after having to pair the devices. Tethering option then disappeared from iPhone.

Restarted iPhone..... no tethering option.

I was 99% sure this was going to happen. I got a text from O2 LAST Wednesday telling me about a new OS update for iPhone... important features blah blah blah.

I don't use tethering. Not bothered!

Stereo Bluetooth has been out since OS 3.0 release, but it lacks the capability of changing tracks from the headphones. Works fine for music, play/pause, answer/end calls, just no skip tracks. Stupid, I hope 3.1.1 fixes it.

I want:

- YouTube with decent quality on 3G cellular, I have about 2-3 Mbit/s effective download rate both on Wi-Fi and 3G cellular, why do I get lousy quality on 3G when I have the bandwidth?
- Removal of other 3G cellular restrictions to allow Skype calls etc.
- Possibility to run at least music apps like Spotify in the background
- Correction of the problem with third-party apps that stops working, solved by new app download
- Removal of the bug that stops execution for a second or more (no response) in any app now and then
- Display of accumulated cellular download in the status bar
- Display of turbo-3G as 3.5G or similar in the status bar
- Possiblity to change rotation of the screen when the keyboard is displayed
- Addition of a "go to end of page" in Safari (had to add a bookmark with javascript to get this)
- More home screens
- Naming of home screens
- Removal of 2GB restriction per app, let the user decide this

"Remotely lock iPhone with a passcode via MobileMe"

Thats nice. so If you lose your phone but didn't have it passcoded you can push that down and then no one will be able to get into it.

Also I d/l iTunes 9 and its nice. Home sharing is neutered enough where music companies wont get up in arms. Though I can see app developers crying about sharing apps between computers (buying a GPS nav system once and then putting it on many phones).

However I cant seem to get Genius mixes to show up, I get Genius but not Mixes.

I think that since the upgrades force a restart of the phone, any residual memory leaks or runaway processes are restarted as well. This would lead to better battery life and snappier overall performance. People notice this each time and attribute it to the new OS, when it is most likely just because they needed to restart their iPhone.

So let me get this straight. I paid 10.00 to upgrade from my 2.2.1 OS to the 3.0 OS and I could have waited literally two days and only paid 5.00 to upgrade from 2.2.1 to 3.1? That's BS!

But I intended on Jailbreaking so the point is moot, but it sucks for those who just barely upgraded/bought new iPod Touch's and did the 10 upgrade when they could have gotten it for 5.

You can already do that, as long as they all sync with the same iTunes account logon. It's not clear (to me anyway) if that restriction exists with the home sharing, but I imagine so -- maybe not though.

When they released 3.0, it took a very long time the first time you synced; after that it seemed to only do delta updates so syncing went much faster. I suspect it is the same this time.

Just to clarify,

3.1 (7C144) was released for all three generations of iPhone.
3.1.1 (7C145) was released for all three generations of iPod touch.

You can download them directly from http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ (which basically parses the http://itunes.com/version XML feed).

iClarified stated (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4536) that the BenM tethering hack was disabled back during the second beta of 3.1, so it's almost guaranteed that it's disabled in the final release.

3.1 beta 2 did fix the high-pitch noise issue that occured in many iPhone 3GS during recording of video and voice memos, so I'm sure it also remained fixed in the final release.

Is it just me or did iTunes9/3.1 upgrade dump all my obsolete firmware files for iPod touch and iPhone? It retained the latest firmware files, but why did it keep my first iPod touch firmware, but dump out all the rest? I guess a restore to factory for the iPod touch needs that first one. But what about the iPhone, then?

I haven't heard of or seen that bug. As an App developer I probably would.

- Removal of the bug that stops execution for a second or more (no response) in any app now and then

Usually that means something is going on in the background. As a very heavy user/developer I haven't seen this either.

- Display of accumulated cellular download in the status bar

That seems a bit specific and non-user friendly.

- Display of turbo-3G as 3.5G or similar in the status bar

I'm sure if you had that you'd get that.

- Possiblity to change rotation of the screen when the keyboard is displayed

Works for me.

When I installed 3.0 on my 3G 16GB, WiFi stopped working (a bug a LOT of people had). It had something to do with Bluetooth being on the same antenna or something like that. Strange that I didn't have this problem with 2.x. So I waited till 3.1 came out trusting that Apple would see the large number of people having this problem and fix it. Well, for me anyway, it isn't fixed. Has WiFi performance improved for anyone on 3.1 who was having issues on 3.0?

The ringtone thing still confuses the hell out of me.

Why is it you can buy a song for $0.99 but PART of the song costs $1.29?? I know it's still cheaper than most carrier ringtones ($4.00!! WTF!) but seriously, on my BlackBerry I just download the song (iTunes Plus, for example) then crop it and put it on my phone. That cost $0 more than the song.

Does it not seem obvious to everyone that ringtones are the same thing as music files? Gah!

Maybe this was a bug that only affected me before, but the Double-click home button setting now works with the combination of:

Search
iPod Controls (ON)

Prior to this, the iPod Controls would pop up if these were both selected, whether I was currently playing music or not. Now it does what it claims, defautling to the search unless music is playing. Interestingly, double tapping brings me to search from music when in portrait mode but brings up the music controls when in landscape (cover flow) mode (probably because it lacks the controls in this mode).

I hope they fixed the stupid bug that you cannot switch tracks with Stereo Bluetooth headphones...

Sorry - and someone can correct me if i'm wrong - but this is not an error. This is a lacking feature of the iPhone. The device needs to support the Bluetooth profile of AVRCP (Audio Video Remote Control Profile) and the iPhone I don't believe does. It only supports A2DP (stereo bluetooth for wireless listening).

Not that this has anything to do with 3.1, but I found after 3.0 I was equally wi-fi challenged (had to be within a meter of the router to get a signal bar on the iphone).

When I configured my router to be "G-only" as opposed to "G or N" suddenly my phone wifi came back to _nearly_ its original form. I have no idea why but it helped.

You may want to check that.

I had the O2 UK tethering hack installed on my non-jailbroken 16GB 3G. I just updated to 3.1 and tethering wasn't working.

I went to settings - general - network and there was no tethering option. I removed the O2 profile provided by the hack and the tethering option reappeared in network settings, but selecting it gave the message to contact O2 to enable tethering on the account.

I reinstalled the hacked O2 profile, back into network settings. As the page was displayed the 'set up internet tethering' option was visible for a split second before disappearing.

Looks like they've well and truly nobbled that hack. It was bound to happen I suppose. It hasn't exactly broken my heart. I'll just go back to using my 3 network mobile broadband USB dongle with my Macbook that is cheaper to use than the O2 tethering bolt-on. I just thought I'd post my experience in case anyone else uses it a lot.

Hmm... if 3.1.1 is iPod touch only, I wonder if 3.1.0 had a camera app for the 3rd-gen, when they had to scrap the camera at the last minute?

If they don't plan on adding a camera this year after all, and the iPhone losing AT&T exclusivity are true, then maybe they're going to phase out the iPod touch in favor of contract-free iPhones.

Gah!

Yep, total ripoff. But I guess they figure they can charge a premium for doing the cropping for you.

I'm still an iPhone noob, so I'll apologize for posting this if it's common knowledge, but here's how to create ringtones from your non-DRM music files.

I am disappointed that with iPhone 3.1, Apple did not give iPhone users the Pedometer, movie effects, and the FM radio that the Nano got.

The pedometer uses accelerometers (that the iphone has as well), the movie effects are simply software based, and the communications chip in the iPhone reportedly includes an FM transceiver that a software update could unlock.

Maybe iPhone users will get these features in 3.2.

Yeah but there's a catch...I enabled home sharing and it says you must use the same iTunes store account on the other computers to share so therefore you can't really do that unless you and all your family/friends use the same account.

This happened to both my wife's phone and mine:rolleyes:

I was able to upgrade my 3GS without too much of a hassle, but when I started my wife's 3GS it gave the same error as everyone above and forced me to restore it from its last backup---which takes much longer than the 3.1 upgrade itself.

When we all updated our iPhones to 3.0 a while back, I had a bricked iphone halfway through the update. When all else failed, I called apple and they said the servers that authenticate each iphone update were overloaded and to keep trying. Fortunately I was able to finish my update within 5 minutes or so, but it makes me wonder if they were really prepared for the massive worldwide updates with both itunes and iphone 3.1 today?

Guess I'll just keep reading and find out. I'm sure any problems will be tossed around here like a spinning beach ball!

AFTER upgrading to 3.1, I spent about 30 minutes re-arranging apps in the updated iTunes Applications pane, pressed "apply", expecting the new positions to take effect -- it restored the positions BACK to the way they were before I did all that moving! (or rather -- it had ZERO effect)...

I haven't found any real differences from 3.0 that I would use daily, or really even ever. Keep in mind here that I have a second gen iPod touch, so many of the changes don't apply... although I hope they fixed the problems 3.0 made withwi-fi

The best things seem to be the iTunes update, which (thank god) is 50 times faster then iTunes 8.

Hopefully this repairs the Bluetooth connectivity on some BMW's.

I have 330i ZHP and the Bluetooth connectivity icon on my OEM navigation screen hasn't been displayed since I've upgraded to the 3G S. In addition, when I make/receive calls; the audio only comes out through the bottom speakers (as opposed to hearing audio through all my automobile's speakers).

Sad, isn't it?

...and I was so looking forward to that feature. I've tried it again. After making all my changes and pressing "APPLY" (this time only 2 minutes worth of changes) iTunes CONFIRMS that I'm "deleting apps" (the ones where I clicked on the "X"), but after it finishes whatever sync process it does -- all the apps I've deleted or moved are unchanged on the iPhone.

If you drill down into the map, you'll see that it routes you past every available StartleBucks on the way - that explains the HyperCaffinated arrival time.

I think walking 20 miles should be more like 10 hours....

Average walking speed for a human is around 3 to 3.5 miles per hour. Walking 20.4 miles would take you 5 hours and 50 minutes at an average pace of 3.5 mph. If you can't maintain that pace then you either have some sort of physical handicap or you simply need to lose a lot of weight ;)

FYI: I'm on Mac 10.5.8, updated to iTunes 9.0 and iPhone 3.1, and everything worked perfectly.

Backups are just as speedy as before.
iPhone is the same speed as before.
Moving icons around in iTunes worked great.
Scrolling applications in iTunes is now fast and smooth.
Peggle now starts up with having half the screen logo flash at the bottom.

I'm not doubting anyone. I'm just saying that at least one person had a very smooth update.

Just checked and it shows up for me under Settings - General - Usage underneath Cellular Data Usage.

But I'm with Rogers in Canada.

If you're with ATT and they don't have tethering enabled yet then the setting to actually turn it on will be hidden.

Updated to iTunes 9 and iPhone OS 3.1. iPhone continues to work great on 'FI elisa' with MMS and tethering. :)

Oh no- tethering is still available for the LOW price of $29.99/month with 3.1. It is a great day to be an AT&T customer the representative said at the press conference!

Had they made it $9.99 or less I might have considered it, but how about raping the consumers that have already secured your company's future again and again. Especially when other companies have made it free - Trio. We're just stuck and there's nothing else we can do except jailbreak or not update! Nice! Take a lesson from Sprint, the way they pissed off all their customers with ETFs etc and their downturn and do the right thing?!

Can a company give a little to get a lot anymore? The only one I see taking care of it's customers is Costco (reducing food margins/profits to keep their members caused them to miss earnings/profits a few months back and the stock dipped) and they don't even sell the iphone!
