- Apple Releases iTunes 9: New Media Syncing Options, Genius Mixes, iPhone App Organization (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/09/09/apple-releases-itunes-9-new-media-syncing-options-genius-mixes-iphone-app-organization/)

- Apple Releases iPhone OS 3.1 for iPhone and iPod Touch (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/09/09/apple-releases-iphone-os-3-1-for-iphone-and-ipod-touch/)

The podcast video can also be directly downloaded through this url (http://movies.apple.com/datapub/us/podcasts/apple_keynotes/sept2009_event.m4v).

The event also marked Steve Jobs' return to the keynote stage after having received a liver transplant earlier this year. This clip shows him walking on stage at today's event:

Steve seemed rather contrite during the first part - he perked up when he started talking about great new products though.

He does look a bit better too. It might be the white balance but he looked like he had got some sun. I don't know if thats from the immuno-supressive drugs people typically take after transplants (he could be more sensitive to sunlight).

The green button that has switched to the mini player in every version of itunes no long does this. It only zooms the window. Kind of like how the windows version works. The only way to get the mini player now is to select it in the view menu or use the keyboard shortcut for it.

Not cool. There is no reason that just because we have feature parity with the windows version should it should work just like the windows version in every way.

Oh and home sharing seems to break regular sharing. Or maybe I don't have enough machines to see if the original sharing feature still works.

It’s sort of miraculous considering he had a transplant less than five months ago.

David Pogue was on CNBC today talking about his interview with Jobs. He said Jobs said since he had been away there were several projects at Apple that needed … then he stopped. Pogue said he asked him, “rescuing?” And Jobs said, well “polishing.”

He hinted that there would be additional announcements soon.

The original sharing feature still works fine. Blue shares are for sharing only (like before), and the new orange shares are for sharing and copying.

He looks healthier than before - definitely put on some weight. Also, remember, the camera always makes you look worse than you are.

I think his hoarse voice probably adds to the overall 'unwell' picture - but that could just be a sore throat, or having been talking all week in meetings.

Obviously he's not in the prime of fitness, but none of us would be after what he's been through the last five years.

Respect for the man - his drive to keep working is something.

Well, I stand corrected. I thought for sure that Steve would wait to retake the stage until the tablet announcement.

Gotta say, he might have looked frail, but he did have a firm "I'm back, the Cook thing is over now" type of tone, didn't he? :)

Jobs said since he had been away there were several projects at Apple that needed … then he stopped. Pogue said he asked him, “rescuing?” And Jobs said, well “polishing.”

Can you imagine the rant Steve must have gone on when he got back and saw that standards had dropped by even a hair? "I CAN'T LEAVE FOR A MINUTE WITHOUT YOU BOZOS SCREWING THINGS UP!!" :D I tremble to think what things will be like after he's not there to be Chief Quality Control Officer.

"We'll see you soon." How soon?

If the camera (and GPS?) on the iPod touch was/were delayed due to problems in production as has been rumored, do you guys think they could come out with another touch update within the next few months? Would they just wait until this time next year? I don't buy that they kept the camera (and GPS?) out to keep costs low. The nano has one and it's pretty cheap. How much would it add to the cost? 10%? Probably less than that. And it would be a killer feature. They'd sell tons more. I don't think they're deliberately gimping it to up-sell people to the iPhone either. So... When's the next update going to be? Is that the "soon" in "We'll see you soon"?

On the GPS, it'd be a killer feature too, but I have no clue how likely it would be. Does anyone know enough about the internals of the iPhone and of the touch to enlighten me on the likeliness of it?

There sure was a lot of clapping for him at the beginning.

That seems to happen a lot in the US. People clapping for things like this, FAAAAAAR too long and just making the person on stage uncomfortable. It only seems to happen in America, we get it, you can stop clapping now.

Steve clearly wanted to start the event after 30 seconds or so, not listen to 3 minutes of brainless applause.

This event was hardly worth the mass media attention it received.

I don't think Apple can really take the blame for this though. The media work themselves up into a frenzy, and then act disappointed when the products they were hoping for aren't announced. In fairness, Apple only put out an invitation about a week ago, and made no announcements suggesting it was going to be a huge event.

Well, I'm not sure where you studied up on American clapping, but you're inaccurate. This WAS a long clap, it was a way for the crowd to show respect and appreciation. When the crowd didn't begin to break after 10 seconds of clapping, it just showed "Hey Man, we're REALLY glad to see you back" and he looked overwhelmed. Not unappreciative.

I downloaded the podcast, the direct stream link and the other link on MR front page, but all the videos stop at around 30 seconds or so, whilst the clapping is still going on.

My system opened the QT files in QT7 by default (surprised me i thought the new version was default) so manually tried in the new one as well. still the same. :(

I disagree. Americans tend to over-lengthen their clapping rituals more than most, to the point of it just being annoying and uncomfortable for the person involved. I see it all the time.

This just went on FAR too long, 30 seconds, great, what seemed like 2 or 3 minutes? Dear god no. Served no purpose, the message and sentiment was clear after half that time.

You could tell Jobs (and most people) just want to get on with it, hence his multiple 'thank you....''s where he seemed very keen to start the presentation. The room would have probably continued brainlessly clapping for another few minutes if SJ hadn't told them to shut up with his body language.

For those people complaining about Apple no longer supporting PPC users, Apple also posted a link for iTunes 8.2.1 for G3:

To be honest, I'm a little surprised Apple did this. Wouldn't they think G3s are "Too old" considering they can't even run Leopard. Some can run Tiger, though.

1) iTunes doesn't download the podcast: it stops right at the beginning saying done. And yes, I deleted my downloads folder in the iTunes Music folder.

2) the direct link doesn't work, it only downloads 1.6 MB and stops there (the file is corrupt)

3) the QuickTime stream is a joke, for every second of play there are 5 of buffering, even at 320

Are you guys having better luck?

I know, it's hard to beat the iPod HiFi announcement, but this one...

...I'm still asking myself who the hell has written Phil Schiller's speech. That guy does not only have the charisma of a rotten apple but also is full of BS. Touting the iPod touch as gaming device is o.K. for me, but really daring to compare it to the DS Lite and the PSP - gee, you have to be full of ***** to do that.

And I started wondering: Haven't Apple learnt anything from the console wars?

It is plainly not about the features, the gfx or the processor power. It's about the games, stupid. As for any reference, check out this generation of console wars - the weakest of them all has won hands down (the Wii).

So wake me up, when Apple has sold 27 million iPod touches in Japan (count for DS Lite) or 12 million (count for PSP).

Anyone in for an online petition to throw Phil Schiller of the board?

Did you know that if you and another person are laying on a bed dying, and you are an organ doner and the other isnt, and you have a 25% chance to live and the other has a 60% they will go for the other person first. That's why I'm not an organ doner. I do commend people who are because that is very generous and kind-hearted but if I have a family and kids at that point I need to think about them before I think about the person next to me.

That's not true. And it's the number one myth of organ donation.

Myth: If emergency room doctors know you're an organ donor, they won't work as hard to save you.

Fact: If you are sick or injured and admitted to the hospital, the number one priority is to save your life. Organ donation can only be considered after brain death has been declared by a physician. Many states have adopted legislation allowing individuals to legally designate their wish to be a donor should brain death occur, although in many states Organ Procurement Organizations also require consent from the donor's family.
