Looking for Canon 1000D or 400D for cheap asap - Help?

So I've been looking around eBay and various forum marketplaces but I've either missed the buyer and someone else has beat me or just haven't found much good deals.

My budget is probably £250 for a Canon 1000D or 400D with 18-55mm EF-S IS kit lens.

Looking for a second hand one, or possibly pay a bit more for a new one.
But I haven't had much luck in finding many deals :/

Anyone willing to help me a bit here track some down?

specs aren't good enough for 350d and 400D is almost identical so I'd be looking for that too then. Cheers :)

But the latter is newer and hence more expensive. Either you wait a bit longer until you have enough money for the camera you want or you're a bit more flexible as to the camera.

the 400d and 1000d sell for similar prices second hand. especially on some other forums. The 400D's go for about £230 and the 1000d's go for a bit more (£260). I'm flexible as both cameras will do the job (I hope, 1000d is preferred though as it is newer and slightly better).

I've also been offered an ex-demo Nikon D60 for £230 delivered so not sure if I want to take that offer or not yet... :/

I'd jump on the Nikon if you've already been offered it. It won't hang around long at that price (at least not likely).

Why? The D60 is just as good as the Canons and since you insist it's urgent, why not go for it?

I'm not sure, I've looked and in tests they are really equal but...
I've always been looking at canon's so I'm not sure.

I can't remember why I wanted to go with canon...

I want to be able to tether with aperture but I think they both can anyway...

And its not 'urgent' just want it asap. It's for uni which I start on the 21st and I just want to be able to use it in the holidays I have left over. or at least to start uni with

I've been looking at them for over a year...

Thing with me is, once I've made up my mind, not even I can change it.
I have this gut feeling that if I buy the Nikon I will regret it... Not for any reason... just me.

I'm going to wait and keep looking for a Canon 1000D

I've got the 400D for my Graphics course and my housemate had the 1000D.

I had a play around with his 1000D and sometimes borrowed it in favour of mine... for some reason I found that mine often didn't focus as sharply and there seemed to be a little more noise on the images (I have had a few problems with my specific camera though, so I couldn't say if it was a general issue or just my camera being weird?)

It's worth thinking about the long term because if you start buying lenses and things and they wont fit if you decide to upgrade your actual camera to a different brand at some time in the future. I chose canon because from what I could tell I could upgrade in the future without having to buy all new lenses.

I'm wondering the same thing. If anything Nikon is more upgradeable, at least you can mount DX lenses on a FX Nikon, not so true with EF-S lenses on an EF Canon.

ah sorry, I just meant to make the point that when you buy a brand of camera and buy lenses that fit it, you'd have to buy all new lenses if you upgraded a few years down the line to a different brand. (I didn't mean canon's the best... it's just they worked for me.)

That makes a lot more sense.

I thought you were saying that Canon was the only company where all lenses can mount on all bodies. Actually as far as I can tell, they are the only company that doesn't.

But they make some preety nice lenses.

I think that should be worth around 450USD. I remember selling off that exact same setup for about 475USD a few months ago.

The grip gives it a nice heft and makes portrait photography a dream. Great camera and great pictures. A lot less menu digging than the Nikon equivalents and definitely a step up from the 1000D you were looking at before (construction, focus pts, etc). I had the exact same setup and was very happy with it.

Until I upgraded to the 40D that is ;)

Not sure about US dollars but I've bought the 400d for £235 with lens, is on its way :D

I'm definitely going to be happy having a 400d over the 1000d and in a few years I will probably upgrade when I have more cash, I'll probably go for a top of the range at that point. :)

Architecture at Lincoln (UK).
Was told i don't need a DSLR for my course but I do need a camera and I didn't feel like paying for a crap Point and shoot when I wanted to do serious photography as well. So I invested in a proper camera :P
