AppleInsider notes (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/09/10/nike_plans_ipod_nano_compatible_heart_rate_monitor.html) that a newly-posted Nike + iPod User Guide (PDF) (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Nike_Plus_iPod_User_Guide.pdf) contains a reference to an as-yet unavailable heart rate monitor that will apparently only be compatible with the new fifth-generation iPod nano launched yesterday (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/09/09/apple-updates-entire-ipod-family-bringing-capacity-and-performance-bumps-to-ipod-touch-and-video-camera-to-ipod-nano/) at Apple's "It's Only Rock and Roll" media event. The reference, found on Page 20 of the user guide, is part of a section entitled "Linking a Nike + iPod Compatible Remote or Heart Rate Monitor".Nike + iPod compatible devices are sold separately from the Nike + iPod Sport Kit and the Nike + iPod Sensor.
You can use a compatible remote to control Nike + iPod wirelessly while you work out.
iPod nano (5th generation only) also supports Nike + iPod compatible heart rate monitors.A further subsection provides information on linking the heart rate monitor to the iPod nano.To link to a Nike+ compatible heart rate monitor (sold separately):
iPod nano (5th generation only): Connect your Nike + iPod receiver to your iPod nano, choose Nike + iPod > Settings > Heart Rate Monitor > Link, then follow the onscreen instructions. The report also cites sources claiming that the heart rate monitor was expected to be launched alongside the new iPod nano, but has been delayed for an unspecified period of time, with no reason given for the delay.

+1 for the iPhone HRM…
But failing that it looks as if I will just have to get a new Nano as well. :D

Am I the only one misreading above? It looks to me like it might be something that could link to the iPhone if they update the app.

I haven't looked at an iPod since I got an iPhone, but a HRM would be awesome.

I don't think you're misreading anything. It says "Before using one of these devices for the first time, you must link it to your iPod nano receiver, iPhone 3GS or iPod touch." Since the 3GS has the Nike+ app built in, this makes a lot of sense.
I'd definitely use this. The Nike+ shoe chip is great, but I'm all for hooking up even more body sensors/monitors to give me more accurate feedback.

Good catch!
Still leaning toward getting the new nano rather than upgrading from my iPhone 3G. Not sure I want to commit to AT&T for another 2 years if I don't have to.

For the nano 5G, it sounds like with the built in pedometer, you can basically count steps (with nano either in pocket or armband - page 71 users guide) and upload data to computer. But if you want additional work out data, you still need Nike + sports kit to "monitor and record your speed, distance, time elapsed, and calories burned, and track your cardio workouts on Nike + iPod-compatible gym equipment." (per page 72 of ipod nano users guide). I'm assuming the Nike + kit, shoe transmitter and receiver add-on, are both needed (meaning nike+ receiver not built into nano).
If I'm wrong let me know.
Thanks.

That's the way I read it, too. Of course, two contextual shadings left me scratching my head. First, what was missing from the posted portion of the manual. Second, I really, really want a heart rate monitor for my iPhone 3gs but would keep using my Polar wrist watch instead of buying another nano.

This would be good. Anything to motivate my running. I'd also like to see a bike computer that could data log to an iPod.

I would prefer a HRM from Polar, or maybe Suunto. In fact, I would like an "Activity Monitor" (see here:http://www.polar.fi/en/products/fitness_crosstraining/FA20/) combined with a HRM.

You know, I have to say this really irks me.
I waited to get the iphone until it had the Nike+ sensor built in (like the touch), so I would only have to carry around one device.
Now this happens. I've been waiting for a nike+ HR monitor and I would be very disappointed if I was forced to buy a new Nano when I already have "the cream of the crop."

I really don't see their work on iPods and iPhones detrimentally affecting their computer side. It's not like it has been ages since the laptops and desktops have been updated (with the exception of the Mac mini, of course!).

I think it's a great idea to put this functionality into the iPhone, but I just can't see myself running with one. Firstly, it's a lot bigger and heavier then my shuffle. Secondly, I don't really care too much if my shuffle gets damaged because it's so cheap and easy to replace - not something I would say about an iPhone.

I think the nike stuff is a neat add on but I have no idea how it works. Is there like a chip you can strap to your shoes if you don't have nike shoes?

Of course it will be...and it will probably have non-removable batteries. So you have to replace the entire HRM. Gotta love it! That's why I went out and bough a garmin 310. Also GPS tracking is much better than the pod.

third party developers like Nathan make a sleeve that you run through your shoestrings. It's just as good as putting it in the sole. I can't stand Nike. They don't fit my feet. You get them out most active shoe stores

sigh, wish I could get in on the Nike+ business, but every receiver I've tried doesn't work well with those Nike+ sensor pockets. And I'm very partial to my Brooks running shoes =\

Most of the high end running stores by me will drill out a spot for the sensor in any of the shoes you buy from them. I'm sure that you could toss a few bucks their way to have them do it for shoes you already have.
Also, I've noticed zero problems having this done to my shoes.

I use this and strap it really tight to my laces - Marware Sportsuit Sensor Case (http://www.amazon.com/Marware-Sportsuit-Sensor-Sport-Black/dp/B000ID6DTG/ref=cm_lmf_tit_3_rsrssi2)
I've been using it all summer and it has been very accurate; I did an 18 mile run on Sunday and it was pretty much spot on in terms of distance recorded (I have a running distance map to check it against).
You can also always calibrate the sensor if the readings are off

I've bought my 5G Nano in anticipation of a Nike+ HRM, but reading what's out there, is it not possible that the references to connecting to an HRM related to gym equipment fitted with a HRM transmitter, rather than a wearable HRM?
I hope not, but has anyone seen anything that positively suggests that a wearable HRM is on its way? The Nano instructions could simply relate to connecting to Nike+ gym equipment.

It's wonderful that Apple's R&D are coming up with and patenting all these amazing ideas, some of which we might even see and be able to buy in a few years time.
However, in the mean time can we just have a plain old year-2000 technology HRM to see us through? The market is waiting for you NOW Apple!

Agreed. They're waiting on something that's for sure.
iTunes update after tablet release? I could see them stringing it till June for 4G iPhone release. But it'll be worthwhile. Can't wait to see runkeeper get a t.
Metrics, lovely telemetrics!

Official - coming in June - http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/05/18/nike_heart_rate_monitor_for_apple_ipod_coming_june_1.html
We'll see how Trails, Runkeeper etc respond - having a HRM provides mountains of health data - and a great metric for sports and training.
