Im settling for the 3rd gen ipod touch and I was wondering what effect in the future would an engraving have?

What if i had to get it replaced because of the warranty, would they still take it?

Yes, they would still take it.
It may affect your resale value though, if you put any identifiers such as names.

I'm also curious.. I've never gotten any of mine engraved, I've always thought that whatever I had put on I would eventually regret or just get sick of looking at it? LOL it's like a tatoo, you can't *easily* undo it.
