Updated to 3.1 and now my visual voicemail does not work. I have to dial my voicemail to retrieve messages....none showing on the phone. AT&T was no help...opened a ticket. Anyone else encountering this issue and have a fix:) Thanks.

If you have a BenM.at profile, uninstall it.
A buddy of mine had the same problem, restored, no dice. I removed the BenM.at profile and his voicemail popped up a few seconds later.

:mad::mad:Same Here...one each, 3GS, and 3G.. After update to 3.1, have no VVM. Called AT&T they made me remove SIM card and install another sim from another phone I had. Waited for signal. Then installed the original sim back and I got voicemail prompt, showing 5 Voice messages waiting. but know VVM. Here is the Weird part, when I tapped on the voicemail ICON it actually dialed out to the voicemail...but still know VVM!!!!!!!! calling APPLE tomorrow..800-MyiPhone.. Good luck..

Thanks Andrew....worked like a charm. Wow...unfortunate...I liked his tethering program.

No Benm.at profile here, what i ended up doing was finding a 5.0 carrier file online, downloaded it and installed it and VVM works on both phones.

Which version of the carrier file did you have before? I thought OS 3.1 came with a 5.0 carrier file?

I had the same problem except AT&T was able to help me. He had me type in a code that didn't seem to do anything. I was still getting the message about accessing voicemail so he called me and left a message than I was able to get the voicemail. First it said my password was incorrect but once I entered it in everything was fine.
Sorry, I didn't write down the sequence of numbers that he had me enter.
By the way, the initial guy I talked to had to transfer me to a tech.

BenM was the culprit for me too. I felt like an idiot when I read this and tried it while I was on hold with an Apple Specialist. They gave me a gentle "Yeah, it'll work best if you don't have unsupported software installed in your phone."

so....
what if you don't have benm on your phone but did the www.michaeljohnston.me/IMAGES/us_att.mobileconfig and removed it and still don't get vvm to work? It says: Voicemail Unavailable. Unable to connect. Try again later.
When I got into Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data Network the only things in there are Cellular data and MMS. The option for VVM isn't even in there any more.
Ideas?

Same issue. I have a 3GS with tethering. I updated to 3.1. Tethering is still there but VVM disappeared. When I too go to Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data Network the VVM option is gone. I even reset my Network settings and no luck. Any ideas?

You need a stock 5.0 att carrier file, upload that and it will work.
My guess is we all had a custom carrier file that enabled MMS and Tethering, when the update happened it somehow jacked our custom carrier file.

I fixed mine but it too a little bit of time. Here's what I did:
1) Restore phone
2) Re-sync
3) Follow steps listed here: http://www.krillr.com/blog/N72ZCXJH/tutorial-mms-on-iphone-os-31-att
After this, my vvm worked again.

Thanks for this thread. Also had the missing VVM problem. Removed BenM.at profile, did a Network Settings reset for good measure, rebooted phone, and all was good again. Glad I didn't have to do any restore or anything.

I have no VVM either and am not sure how to get rid of that profile (or how to look for it). Can someone give me the instructions. Also how to download (manually) the 5.0 carrier file that was mentioned in case that is the problem instead...
Thanks so much!
I checked and I don't have the ben m profile. I did a restore last night and the tethering stuff I had loaded previously is gone. But I still have no VVM.

Um, my VM just stopped working. I can't use it.
And I have no idea who/what BenM is. Do I have to call AT&T?

Go to the settings screen and scroll down
If you see a line that says profile, touch it
Delete your profile.
Phone will restart
Now go back to the same screen and at the same place there will be a line to restore your profile
Once this is done VVM should start working. I spent an hour on the phone with Apple. Hope this saves you the trouble.

For those of you who don't see a "Profiles" section under "Settings > General", and for those of you who have Reset Network Settings and for those of you who have deleted the BenM.at profile file and are still having issues with VVM, odds are you DID, at some point, try tethering with the 3.0 or 3.0.1 iPhone software, which required that you install a non-AT&T IPCC file, so stop blaming your service provider and/or Apple, neither of whom is to blame for your modifying of your device software from factory installed software.
In your case, here's how to get voicemail back.
1) Disconnect your iPhone from your USB cable and quit iTunes.
2) On your Mac, browse to: 'Macintosh HD/Users/"yourhomefolder"/Library/iTunes/iPhone Carrier Support'
3) Drag all files in that folder to your Desktop. There will probably be one called "ATT_US.ipcc", which is the hacked/modified carrier support file that 3.0 used to allow tethering, which, as previously said is NOT supported by AT&T or Apple (but probably will be in the future).
NOTE - if you modified your original ATT_US.ipcc file and it is still located in that folder with a different name, like "ATT_US.ipcc.old" or something of that nature, then simply delete the one called "ATT_US.ipcc" and rename the old/original file to "ATT_US.ipcc". This will allow you to hold the "Option" key on your keyboard and click "Check for Updates" in iTunes, then manually browse to the folder listed in step 2 and choose that file... much more painless than a full factory restore. If that's your case, as it was for me, don't read any further. If you only have one file called "ATT_US.ipcc", keep reading...
4) Connect your iPhone and open iTunes.
5) Restore your iPhone to factory settings. Then re-sync whatever you want.
6) After all is well, delete the .ipcc files from your Desktop that you dragged there earlier.
Yes, this will involve re-syncing all your data - a long process. Restoring to a previous backup will not help, as that process will restore modified ATT_US.ipcc files - the correct ATT_US.ipcc file will be downloaded and copied to your computer during the restore. Hopefully you didn't delete your original, AT&T-provided .ipcc file and simply renamed it when you modified your software to enable tethering.
