I was holding out buying an ipod touch until the new models were released as I was one of those idiots who believed the hype about the cameras! now I'm a little underwhelmed and thinking I might just go for an 8 GB refurb for $149 from the Apple store. I've never bought a refurbished product before - are they really 'like new'? if it will come covered in scratches and break the day after the warranty expires, I'd rather just pay the extra $50 for a new one. please advise!

Also, probably a stupid question but are the refurbs available in store or only online?

I bought a nano a few months ago that, aside from the packaging, I'd never have known it was a refurb. I've also purchased an Airport Express and a Power Mac refurb'd in the past. I'm a big fan.

It is highly likely you won't even be able to tell yours was refurbished either.

My brother has a refurb Nano. You wouldn't notice the difference from a brand new one.

I say, go for it!

Today I just bought a 2nd gen for $199 after the Apple's Touch "update" . Great way to buy Apple products. Still using my refurb Macbook. Looked brand new when I bought it.

Yeah, you should be fine with the Nano. However, I've seen some nasty (mainly dirty screen) Touch refurbs and though my iPod Video 5G refurbs were spotless, both came with problems ranging from random freezing to dead hard drives. I don't seem to have the best luck, though... :(

I bought my 1st gen 8gig like a month after launch (when they were still $300). Had to exchange that one 4 or 5 months later, grabbed a new one and it still has 0 scratches because of the heavy duty case I kept on it. I'm thinking of selling it for maybe $130 or so on ebay or craigslist.
