Why headphones mic and not on the iPod itself?

Title^^ I've seen the new headphones, and they come with a mic... why didn't freaken apple just put in on the FREAKEN iPod? I mean if their trying to make it so we can't use skype or something, than why bother putting it with the headphones, if thats not the case I don't get why they didn't put in on the hardware itself like the phone ....
 
I assume because there just using the headphones from the iPhone to save on costs. Its not built in the iPod Touch to keep it separate from the iPhone.
