Import clips to iPhoto or iMovie

I'm relatively new to Macs, so I appreciate the help.

When I connect my camera, iPhoto automatically imports the movie on my camera card. I also want to use the clips in iMovie, as I like the timeline of having all my movies in one place. Should I import into one or the other, or both?
