A very nice bit of recognition for Apple's design department, and absolutely deserved. I completely agree with the article's sentiment about the packaging being an experience to open...when you finally get to you iPod, you almost hear a choir singing "Hallelujah."

As the Director of Creative Marketing at a medium sized business, I applaud the keen design sensabilites apparent behind this iPod packaging. Congradulations to Apple's design team for designing, in my opinion, one of the most innovative and brilliant packing designs of our time.

Coolest thing is--- it's not just the iPod team that does it.

My iBooks, Powerbooks, iSight, etc all had the same attention to elegance in the packaging quality and "opening experience."

It's really a nice thing that they pay attention to it... you only get one shot at a first impression-- and the first impression is important when your customers pay (usually) high prices for (almost always) high quality.

The link above goes to a very brief Macworld story, which then links to a page on the ID Magazine site, from there it's only six (ok, might have been 5) pages till you finally get to where you should have been all along.

Here's a link straight to the real info:

Yes, the iPod's packaging is really cool. Take for instance the iPod mini box. I had the pleasure of disassembling the box. What most people don't realize is that the iPod box is made up of one large piece of thin cardboard ingeniously folded.

hmmm i say the the team that worked on the box should work on imac G5/cube design if you will. A nice computer in a little square box that everyone would just love to open and poke around. hmmm now that i think about it, i think i would start touching things if it was that tempting.

I find it hillarious that so many critics (even one idiot on MacBytes today) saying that the Ipod is a piece junk. Yet none of the alternative audio players that I know of has won any kind of award for anything. The ipod is so great even the damn box has an award. HA!

So true. I was amazed at the packaging for my PB and iPod. However, the thing that blew me away was just recently when I ordered a set of in-ear headphones. It just astounds me the attention to detail in the packaging of something so small. It becomes more than just buying a set of headphones - you actually get consumer gratification, as if you've made a big purchase....but it cost less than $100!

I've actually had the pleasure of working with the designer, Jeff Zwerner. Jeff used to work at Apple but is now the Principal for the San Francisco office of Factor Design an interactive design firm. He also designed the TiBook packaging.

He has also been a speaker at an AIGA conference and is currently co-author on the book "The Defining Factor: Using Design to Strengthen Your Business and Your Brand" due out late 2004.
