A number of AT&T iPhone users around the United States are reporting that MMS is already working in advance of the September 25 date AT&T has officially announced (http://www.macrumors.com/iphone/2009/09/03/atandt-announces-iphone-mms-launch-date-september-25/) as the MMS go-live date. According to accounts from forum members and across the web, MMS has started to work for some AT&T iPhone users with iPhone OS 3.1 out of the blue, requiring no action on their part to get it working.
Other forum members (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=782654) have followed instructions provided by Krillr.com (http://www.krillr.com/blog/N72ZCXJH/tutorial-mms-on-iphone-os-31-att) to manually update a carrier settings file on their iPhones via iTunes, a method similar to hacks reported (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=724822) earlier this summer. Some have had success while others have not, though the ability to get MMS working appears to be more likely in some locations than others. Members have reported working MMS after applying the carrier file in California, Washington, Florida, Texas, and more, while others in Colorado, New Jersey, and other states describe that this method has not worked for them.
One side effect experienced by some who have tried this method is that visual voicemail ceases to function. Others report that MMS messaging will only work after the iPhone's Wi-Fi radio is turned off.
Another potential factor in enabling MMS functionality before the official go-live date is the selected messaging plan. Those on an unlimited family messaging plan appear to have better chances at success in enabling MMS than those on a standard iPhone messaging plan.
While the methods that require the use of a modified carrier file to enable MMS do not technically appear to be jailbreaking or hacking your iPhone, following these instructions may have some negative consequences that are yet unknown, so iPhone users should proceed with caution in following them. With AT&T's official roll-out of this feature in under two weeks, it may be less risky to wait.

Although tons of people will defend either apple or att, the time this took was simply pathetic. This is true, of course, without even mentioning the outrageous cost of the service and the phone itself.
Of course Palm is even lamer for not having 60,000,000 apps available within 3 months of release of the phone.
Is it just me, or does no one really use MMS to begin with? It's either text messages or email.
You're right -- Iphone users haven't had this feature to use in the first place; only available options have been mailing a picture with e-mail or plain text.
Also -- if nobody would use it, why would att say they needed such substantial upgrades to their network (and years to do such tremendous upgrades) -- because it's a service that "no one really uses to begin with"??

AT&T should wait until next year after their contract is done with Apple. Then their failure would be complete.

I have been a witness to this myself, It doesn't seem to target any particular generation of iPhones being that my friend in my Physics class has a iPhone 3G and she has the MMS functionality on her phone while I have a 3GS and a 3G and it isn't active on either one of them. Now as the article states, there are some methods that you can do that will enable it, but it is at your own risk. Personally, the 25th is just around the corner. It makes sense to just wait for the go-live date. :apple:

How do they "enable" it on your phone? Do they push some kind of update over the air or would you have to check for updates in iTunes?

The same thing happened with me. I have an iPhone 3G running OS 3.1 and Carrier is AT&T version 5.0.
The downloaded AT&T carrier file is also version 5.0. I wonder which carrier file version that the lucky people have where it just started working magically. :)
It would be nice to have, for now I've been emailing my girlfriend on verizon photos using the phonenumber@vzpix.com trick, she was able to email me photos back thankfully, but this'll make things easier... hopefully... if it works that is.
I agree it's long, long, LONG over-due. AT&T should have been prepared earlier. Apple is not without it's faults, they should have had MMS ready from 1.0, maybe 2.0 but that's pushing it. I can see where they wanted people to email photos instead of using MMS but, a lot of cell phones didn't have that capability for email. Not everyone has a smart phone. Sure some people will love and enjoy using MMS and some people won't touch it at all, the point is - it's great to have it if you'll use it! :D

It's either text messages or email.
All this hoopla over missing MMS is a tempest in a teapot. People seem to want it not because they're actually going to use it, but because they can then claim their device is feature complete, or finally has a feature that other devices have had for years, etc. In other words, the motivations of the complainers seems fishy.

Oh no doubt.
But I can count on the fingers of my one hand how many times I've received an MMS, wanted to send one, or whether it was ever an issue.
I'm only writing about my own anecdotal observations, however. I may be wrong in the general sense.
MMS does seem to be a growth industry, though:

I called ATT 3 times today and everyone gives me a different answer but the end result is that they all say the 25th and some of the people have no idea that it's available already.
Anyone have any luck calling into and complaining with ATT?
I have talked to Apple support and Att support and some people know about the OPT OUT CODES in ATT systems but apparently on account the MMS option isn't even there so there is no OPT OUT code to erase from my account.

Its a combination of software and AT&T. VVM worked fine before I upgraded to 3.01 and then 3.1. And you can't tell me the iPhone software has been perfect either. With every version of the iPhone OS, my 3G gets slower and slower.

I wish I had a dollar for everytime somebody on this forum said that because they don't need a feature, the people who want it are whiners and complainers.
Except that MMS usage isn't very widespread, and seems to be much less of a concern outside of our little corner of the internet.
And you misunderstood. Complainers are just that, people complaining about something, whether rightly or wrongly. My question has to do with their motivations. As in, are those who want MMS so badly and who have been so critical of its absence actually going to use it? Did they actually have a need for it in the first place? How many of them just want to indulge in games of featurism? Which tech-heads on the net are famous (notorious) for doing.
In any case, the entire issue is just for consideration. It would be difficult to quantify these groups.

There are some situations where MMS is absolutely better then email. If i need to send a quick work related picture to my boss who is not near his computer, its absolutely better to be able to send direct to his phone. He doesn't have a smart phone with email capabilities in the first place but he can send/receive MMS.
Bottom line is this is a basic function that ALL phones should have.

I would use this all the time to send pictures to my friends and wife who mostly don't have phones that can receive e-mail. In fact just this past weekend I was wishing I had MMS on my iPhone because I wanted to send an image of a product at the market to make sure I was getting the product my wife wanted... I couldn't. Now THAT is a good reason for MMS, if there ever was one. ;)
Too late, AT&T and Apple are already being sued because they used misleading advertising concerning MMS capabilities with the new iPhone release.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-10321437-37.html
According to the latest lawsuit, first reported by InformationWeek, customers were told that MMS would be enabled on June 17, 2009, when iPhone OS 3.0 was released.
That seems rather strange, considering that Apple and AT&T announced on June 8, during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference keynote that MMS would not be available until later in the summer. AT&T confirmed that time frame to Wired on Friday.
Whether any of the suits have a whole lot of merit remains to be seen, I suppose.

Working in Phoenix, AZ after countless hours of non-working. 3.0.1 and Carrier Update 5.1
I would like to recomend the following steps to those who have not yet tried.
Steps I took:
Updated carrier settings with 5.1 and reboot (using tutorial in this thread)
Take sim, put in other AT&T phone
Log into AT&T account via cingular.com
Change phone from iphone to other AT&T phone
Change text message plan from "iPhone Text Messaging Unlimited" to "Messaging Unlimited"
Sent test message
Put sim Back in iphone
Camera icon present and sent test message to self...now works flawless.
PS. MMS worked when wifi turned off, however, after entering in all the wap settings works now with wifi turned on.

Well it will not work for most people off the bat, but if you update your carrier settings via that guide, it should work just fine with the family unlimited msg plan.
Thanks but I'd rather wait for the official way.:)

Yeah, June or July and I may give it a shot, but it's so close now I'll just wait. :p
Still, I have to wonder... how many will I actually send? I've probably only used copy/paste like 10 times and we whined about that too.

I haven't.. been trying to figure out whether this was user-enabled or something that just randomly started rolling out over their customer base.

I have unlimited family text messaging and have not used the "hack" and the phone has not been JB'ed. I haven't received the MMS.
Does it suddenly come up (the picture icon on SMS) or should I expect some sort notice from AT&T or software update?

Just wait until the 25th, by then they will send you a message via E-mail & Text. Or if you go into iTunes, on the next update day, it will ask you update your carrier settings. Or you can just press update on screen. Also, remember that you will have to turn on MMS via Messaging panel in your iPhone.
Although this, "Hack" isn't really a hack and doesn't require a Jailbroken phone. It's just an updated Carrier Setting.

If you are on a family plan with the unlimited messaging plan, it will automatically do it. But I'm not sure about individual plans.
*EDIT* Also, it pops up on the edit rate plan area. And if you go to your local AT&T store, you may be able to get someone cool enough to remove the opt out. The customer service people on the phone will not do it, but certain people in store are nicer.
I've also had the complete opposite experience. The employees in store are some of the biggest *******s I've dealt with but the phone support is great.
Mind you, I don't have any hatred for at&t.

I know what you mean. I have had some ****heads of people I've met in my old hometown in California, but out here in Indianapolis, everyone is super cool. It also could be because I have a big business account with them as well.
And yes phone support people are cool, but always go by standards.

if i had to guess, it would be by billing date or when your billing cycle ends. this way you are sure to spread it around the coverage area instead of doing it all at once.
AT&T is probably afraid of everyone MMS'ing all at once on the 25th just to crash their network

Installing the carrier file doesn't magically make MMS work. It's at&t slowly removing the opt-out.

Well I just followed the instructions on the front page (Krillr) and it seems to work fine! I'm on an iPhone 3G running 3.1. I am on a family plan with unlimited texting if that makes a difference. I didn't have to go into General Settings and change anything. It just worked, I'm in central New Jersey.
The downloaded carrier setting file says 5.1 on the iPhone (funny how when I did a "Show Package Contents" and viewed the IPCC plist it said version 5.0).
I sent a photo to my girlfriend on Verizon and she received it just fine. She replied with a photo and I saw it fine also. I sent it to my brother who didn't have MMS turned on and he didn't receive anything. Sending the MMS just took a few seconds longer then a regular SMS message, but it seems to work.
Yay! :) :D

Is it just me, or does no one really use MMS to begin with?
It's either text messages or email.
All this hoopla over missing MMS is a tempest in a teapot. People seem to want it not because they're actually going to use it, but because they can then claim their device is feature complete, or finally has a feature that other devices have had for years, etc. In other words, the motivations of the complainers seems fishy.
I bet when MMS finally does come out there will more people using it than you think. When you get an e-mail with a picture does the picture just show up on the screen like a MMS. Nope you have to go into your mail app select your e-mail account your using and then on the message and then have to download the picture from your e-mail server.
Everybody thinks email is the way to go when sending pictures, if your sending a bunch at once then yes but if you want yo send 1 quick picture then MMS is the way to go

Works for me here in SoCal. Sweet. And I've used it more in the past two days than I used it on any other phone with MMS capabilities in the past.
The photo quality seems pretty nice; perhaps sending these "email-sized" pictures was part of the reason MMS was delayed with the iPhone. It's the only phone, smart or not, that I've ever used or been around that sends pictures the way it does. I've had friends on other carriers/devices comment on the size and clarity of the pictures I've taken and sent with my iPhone.
I still have lots of friends and family who don't have smart phones, and they've been sending MMS to me, but recently [almost past year or so] I've not received anything, not even that silly link and code bs. It's nice to finally be in touch with the rest of the non smart phone world. LOL. :D

1. Go to Settings -> General -> Network -> Cellular Data Network
2. Enter these settings under the MMS category:
APN: wap.cingular
Username: wap@cingulargprs.com
Password which is case sensitive: CINGULAR1
MMSC: mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: 66.209.11.32
(keep MMS Max msg size and MMS UA Prof URL how they are)
3. Now reboot your iPhone again.

Mine has been working great since Friday night. Visual voicemail still works flawlessly and it doesn't matter if wifi is on or not.
Follow this guide perfectly.
PS: some people are still getting red exclamation marks, I did too up until Friday when AT&T was out for about 4 hours in my area. All of a sudden they would go through.
It works it works it works....no problems on my phone and I am trying my wife's phone now....Thank you thank you thank you!!!! no problems with exclamation marks and no problems with visual voicemail......thanks !!!!!!

I'm getting the exclamation point as well in Nashville. I'm not on a family plan, which seems to be why it's not working. Any solutions? Other than wait til the 25th....
Has anyone answered how at&t plans to un-roll this service? Obviously it's got to be synced/updated correct?

Where are the exclamation marks showing up?
they show up when you attempt to send a picture message. the progress bar gets stuck at the end, sits there for a second, then you see the exclamation point next to what you were trying to send. see below.
http://images110.fotki.com/v1585/photos/5/51621/223476/photo-vi.jpg
when you click the red exclamation point, the option to resend comes up
http://images110.fotki.com/v1582/photos/5/51621/223476/photo2-vi.jpg
in settings i originally had wireless.cingular.com:80 (didn't work). then i tried 66.209.11.32 since other people seemed to have success with it (didn't work either). I'm in Los Angeles and it seems as though other people around here are getting it to work. not sure why. i'm on 3.0, jailbroken, and on a mac.
also...
anyone else's custom carrier icon disappear after the update? mine disappeared. i went into /system/library/carrier bundles/ATT (and /system/library/carrier bundles/Unknown), replaced the carrier logos the same way i always do, but it's still reads ATT. also tried updating the following folders: 310150, 310170, 310180, 310380, 310410, 310980, 311180 and ATT_US.bundle. none of them worked. anyone know what's up?

I did call att and they said the opt out wasnt on my account it should be ready on the 25th. Also talked to someone online via chat and they told me the same thing. I did at one point earlier today see a switch for tethering to turn on and off and explained how to hook it up via usb or bluetooth. I do not have that setting anymore after playing with the settings more. I have unlimited texts on an individual plan. Also I'm in NY and so far from what I've read online it seems to be working for most people west of here. Havent seen any east coasters working yet.

Hey everyone, thanks to Andy A. I now have an IPCC that will enable MMS a little bit differently in the ipcc itself. For this one you will not need to enter a username or password or anything. I am currently rewriting my guide, then I will post the new guide and IPCC.
For this one, all you will have to do is upload the ipcc to your phone, reboot, and bam...it will also enable tethering if you are on 3.0 or 3.0.1 but just MMS if you are on 3.1.

in addition, earlier in this thread, someone mentioned that you can make changes to your online account. where? i don't see any opt-out under the 'manage features' area.

Me: "Is MMS blocked on my account?"
ATT REP: "No, you have unlimited data and txts for your iPhone plan. Currently, iPhone is not capable of MMS until the 25th of this month"
Me: "Okay, I will wait 'till the 25th then. Thank you"
Theres your main problem...you are on the iphone plan...
PEOPLE: calling is not going to do any good, they won't change anything.
and having a friend who works at a store wont do any good either. he doesnt have the same system and tech support

Then what plan do I need to have in order to get this MMS working before the 25th of this month? Business plan/Enterprise? What's the difference?

My wife and I did the hack and got our 3gs's to work. They worked when sending from the message app. However only my wifes worked when trying to send them from the camera app. I discovered when I entered my wifes contact info in the contact app I did not enter her area code so the mms I kept sending didnt recognize her. As soon as I put her area code in I could mms from the camera app. Just a tip.

Guess I got a bit overzealous. I can wait another week. Just was hoping that it would work now, instead. With the option to do it but with ! is just a tease :p

first off your prolly old second i have a couple of lady friends who like to send me pictures of themselves and it kinda ruins the mood saying oh yeah btw you gotta send to my email bc at&t is lame and won't release mms and apple is 4 yrs late on it, and i won't be fishy ill be straight up. I WANT MMS TO SEE PICTURES OF MY FRIENDS BOOBAGE!

Great site first off... I told a buddy about the process regarding getting the mms feature. I have a 3gs - which he jailbroke etc. He followed the directions from the pdf however one minor oversight (I hope...) I did not have the 3.1 update before he did anything with it... I am terrible w/ computers and only use my mac for pics and home movie editing... Please Help or am I screwed???

so.. having read all this, am i correct in assuming that no one's phone simply.. started working with mms?
it sounds like everyone had to do some sort of modification to something they wouldn't normally be modifying.
did anybody's phone "just start working"?
My phone "just started working" after I upgraded to 3.1. I haven't hacked anything since upgrading to 3.1, but I did try to hack it to get it working on jailbroken 3.0.1 with no luck. Upgrade to 3.1 seemed to be the magic bullet for me. I'm in Central Florida and have the unlimited family messaging plan.

Is there something wrong with your iPhone? Or is everything working besides the MMS feature?
If there is something wrong with your iPhone try a Hard reset by holding power and home button for 5 seconds until it powers back up. If this doesn't work then the only thing you can do is plug it in to iTunes and hit restore which brings you back to the last backed up stage. This should solve your problem.

Voice mail feature not working - the mms feature semi-worked. I have the camera icon but when I tried to send I got the red exclamation mark.

Is there anyone in San Antonio area (area code 210) that has MMS???
I'm in SA now with a 210 and after making the text plan change I was able to get MMS working.. There was a hint a while back that said to put your sim into another phone and make a few calls in the other phone, then login to your AT&T account and change the text plan from iPhone Text to a Normal Text plan...it would see the phone change and allow you to do this..
This seems to have worked along with making the changes as noted in tonight's postings by krillr and then the updates to the fields.. the combo of these 3 seemed to get it working for me...
YMMV....Rick.

if you are on Carrier 5.0 then you haven't followed either of the guides at all....The latest will put you on 5.2 and the guide before that puts you at 5.1
