One thing i have noticed is we don't is a good list of free apps. so here is my attempt at getting this going.

Crash landing- Hard Game....try to land the shuttle by moving the iPhone
Paper toss- Flick balls of paper into a trash can. Watch out for the fan blowing air.
Tap Sudoku- Very good Sudoku game.
Chess With Friends - online chess. Make a move and come back a few hours later to continue the game
Words With Friends- free Scrabble-esque game
Tap Tap Revenge 2- guitar hero type game

Shazam - Don't know the name of the song playing. Use Shazam to identify and tag it

Global Apps - See the top 100 in every category in every iTunes store. I've found a couple great apps in other stores that aren't popular here in Japan due to their not being easy for Japanese to use.

My list:

1) Amazon.com - invaluable if for nothing more than to have its user generated product reviews handy while out shopping. Turn on Amazon one-click ordering, get yourself an Amazon prime account and then this app is like crack!

2) Pixelpipe - upload all of your photos and movies to whatever service you prefer, all from this one app. Supports popular destinations such as Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug, YouTube, Vimeo, Revver . . . the list goes on and on. Will even upload to multiple sites at one time. I haven't used the built-in uploading features of the iPhone or any specialized "single-site" apps since I downloaded Pixelpipe a few months back.

3) What's On - I've tried may "TV Guide" type apps over the past year or so, but none work as fluidly and are as elegant as this free app. Most are slow as molasses when downloading data, but this app really flies. To increase its speed even further, I suggest selecting your favorite channels in the guide and deleting the ones you know you will never watch.

4) Shipments - the easiest way I've found to track packages from FedEx, UPS, etc. You sign up for the service online, then whenever you get a shipping confirmation from a retailer, simply forward it to TrackMyShipments and all pertinent information will be synced with the iPhone app.

5) iDeals - find the best bargains offered online each day from popular sites like Woot!, Monoprice, DailySteals, Buy.com, etc. Sort deals by type, make in-app purchases, share deals with friends. Exclusive deals coming some.

You need to get over that then. How do you expect them to make any money? A developer has two choices (actually three, if they just give it away), they can sell the app for a price and maybe make money if enough people buy it or they can make it free and have lots of people download it and make money on the ads.


OP, I noticed you didn't put Funambol on the list. It's a life saver program if you ever need it (your HD has crashed, you didn't backup, and you need to get your contacts back).

remember it needs to be free.....no trials that only let you use the app for a short time or limits what you can do to make you buy the paid version.

You can add Tap Tap Revenge 2, Flickr & i.tv (tv show listings and Tivo remote).

Edit: you can also add the free version of Twitterrific and Now Playing (movie previews and showtimes) also. Kind of amazing how many good quality free apps there are.

Sorry to break it to you, but most "good" games cost a dollar or two in my experiences anyway.

Anyway some other good apps are Google Earth for traveling and The Weather Channel.

VoCal - Free Edition

It is very quick way set a reminder without the fuss of typing into my iPhone so i can also do it on the move. Allows upto 3 reminders which should be enough for most people. Professionals and busy people can get the full version for unlimited future reminders.

This is a new free voip application called Whistlephone ( http://www.whistlephone.com ). It is a free SIP phone that can work with any SIP service provider, it supports Banjour and three way calling. If you sign-up for their service, you can make inbound and outbound phone calls to any number. For inbound calls you do not have to have the app running, you can set up your own reach list. For example you can receive the phone call on your iPhone or home phone when the app is not running.
