And I must say i'm not familiar with the AVCHD. How is it compared to H.264?

AVCHD is h.264, although different manufacturers implement it slightly differently.

How is this cam compared to Canon's 7D? I'm just speaking of video not their still photo functions (which the 7D is much better for anyway)?

Just in terms of video is this a better choice?

I gave significant thought to the S11 because of the much higher density imaging chip but that's for stills only. In the end, I just couldn't justify spending that much more money and ended up with the HG21. It records at the same maximum bandwidth as my HG21 but I'm already having issues dealing with the 24Mbps files on my MacBook Pro. They are very sluggish to work though. Lately I've been using 17Mbps to give my laptop a little room to breathe. If the 8MP stills capability isn't a big issue for you then an HG21 would be the same video quality (24Mbps) or, even cheaper, an HG20. The HG20 is the HG21 without an optical viewfinder (LCD-only), smaller hard drive and slightly different LCD panel. Otherwise it's exactly the same imaging/recording circuitry.
