It should. I'll let you know when mine gets finished. But just get AptBackup from cydia in case and then run that and then do a normal phone back up, if the cydia apps arn't there when you start up cydia it should download them again.

You plug your phone in normal and let it create a backup. Then you will have to go into DFU mode and install the new firmware. Once the new (jailbroken) firmware is installed you can restore from the backup in iTunes.

Yea, the 3G(S) name comes up a couple of times during the process. No big deal though.

It always writes over the JB files as well as everything else on the phone.

You never retain your Cydia stuff when updating.

As long as you never updated to Apple 3.1 IPSW as that locked your baseband.

The PT custom IPSW does not update the baseband.

However, I don't know if UltraSn0w works with 3.1 (even on old baseband ??)

If you get error 1600 "CLOSE AND RESTART" itunes, you still in DFU mode, and then you be able to load your customized ipsw file. I did it and works like a charm.

No, you will have to sync everything you backed up back to the phone after the update.

Re-sync doesn't take very long depending on the size of your library and # of apps.

Use of PT or Redsn0w won't make a difference. WB or MobileSubstrate needs an update to work with 3.1

Saurik will likely have it fixed by tomorrow. After all, tonight is the first night most of these Cydia apps have been tried on 3.1.

GIve it just a little time, it will all get updated.

I've tried redsn0w, pwnagetool and i can confirm after 15 tries, cydia and all related apps DO NOT work on my 2g iPhone. On the other hand Icy worked like a charm, there are certain sources though that don't work anymore:(

Few people have said that 3.1 couldn't be jailbroken. Most of us have been talking about unlocking baseband 05.11.07, which this does not do. The whole purpose of this is to allow you to upgrade without upgrading your baseband; those with 3.1 already installed or with new phones factory-installed with 3.1 are still out of luck for unlock for the foreseeable future (and perhaps forever).

You install ultrasn0w from Cydia, just like you did with 3.0.x

Yes, you can. But you will have to borrow a Mac or get someone to post a customized ipsw made on a Mac.

Never. PwnageTool is a mac-only application and always has been. But as I said right above, if you know someone with a Mac you can make an ipsw and use it on your PC; or you can look for customized ipsw files online. Be sure you trust your source, though.

Correct. Pwangetool as got the option to upgrade the baseband greyed out and not ticked. I upgraded. I didn't hacktivate. Installed Ultrasn0w and then stuck my Vodafone SIM in and get signal. Have made numerous phone calls today. Data works fine as well

Run Pwnage first and it will make a custom firmware for your phone. Once you have that you can use that to restore your phone to. I think upgrading will also work. Just alt + click on upgrade or restore to use the custom firmware.

one of the dev tem members has said keep your phone jailbroken to 3.0 or 3.0.1 (which ever yours is at) then build custom ipsw in pwnagetool and just hit restore in iTunes DO NOT use update

I'll let you know what happens. I upgraded my 3G last week to 3.1 and it upgraded my baseband. I'm in the middle of doing the pwnage restore now.

There are no known vulnerabilities in the 05.11.07 baseband, so there is no forseeable unlock for people unfortunate enough to have upgraded to or purchased with the new firmware. If an exploit can be found, I imagine it will be at least several months. And there is no guarantee that it will ever be unlocked.

I don't care so much about unlocking, I just care about jailbreaking. I have a 2G and a 3GS that will work for that.

Yesterday i got a problem with Winterboard causes by MobileSubstrate. Today MobileSubstrate is silent updated to version 0.9.3043-1 and comes through Cydia with the Winterboard package. Works like a charm!

Since you are using a Legit sim you need to make sure you DON'T check the Activate box when creating your IPSW in Pwnage tool. :) I did the same thing.

That's the actual location... /etc/hosts

Open finder and then (I think, not on my mac) go to Go>Open Location and then type in /etc/ and it should open up the folder with the hosts file.

Or go to Terminal and type su root
nano /etc/hosts

OR I think with TextWrangler you can browse in the Open File dialog to /etc/hosts

That's the only thing the Pwnage Tool does...

Just follow the directions. DL the 3.1 IPSW first. I always use Advanced Mode. Maybe that's what you mean about "custom". Follow the onscreen directions and it will make you a custom IPSW.
