Syncing Photos

When I take a photo with the built in camera with my iPhone does it auto sync to my computer or do I have to manually open up iPhoto to sync the photos?

I have an older Mac. I have to open iPhoto with the iPhone plugged in and it syncs that way.
Sometimes I just e-mail it to myself and touch it up in Photoshop.
