We have a best free apps thread, which should be stickied given the thread starters efforts, an excellent thread. We should also have a best paid apps thread. I'll categorize them according to app store categories, link each app to the app store, and rank apps in order of mentions by MacRumor members. Try to concisely list the features that you like about your recommended apps (Your recommended apps will not be listed if no reasons are given, since part of the purpose of this thread is to help people looking for a particular kind of app decide what app to get).

Productivity
Things - a popular to do app, syncs to a desktop counterpart via LAN.

Pocket Informant - Schedule and task app. Multiple calendar views, timebars in monthview, and tasks that show up on the appointed days. Excellent developer experience and support. Syncs to Google calendar and Toodledo.

Documents To Go with Exchange attachments is proving to be a very useful app for me, allowing me to access, view and edit documents from my work Exchange email, and files synced from my MacBook using the DTG desktop app, which allows syncing of entire folders. Excel editing supposed to be coming very soon.

Air Sharing Pro - Great way to store documents and other files on the iPhone. Connect via IP Address. Can also access iDisk and print documents stored. Avatron.com (http://avatron.com/apps/air-sharing-pro/)

GoodReader - Decent and inexpensive PDF reader. Can handle large PDFs. WiFi transfer. How GoodReader Works (http://www.productiveorganizer.com/productivity/how-to-read-pdf-books-and-files-on-your-iphone-goodreader-app-review/)

Outliner - Great for lists, checklists, and brainstorming. Syncs to an online service.

Instapaper Pro - Read articles offline. Articles well formatted, and the tilt scrolling is an added bonus.

Instaviz - A learning curve to use this mindmapper/flowchart app, but the flexibility of node linking and automatic organization make it a superb app for figuring out more complex stuff.

Touch Goal - Quickly record and view whether you kept to a habit or activity.

Momo - Passcode to open this app, tags, full text search, and live URLs, phone numbers, and email addresses make this app very functional.

Readdledocs - Get docs from emails into this app.

iSaveWeb - Save webpages for offline viewing.

Utilities
Measures - Quick unit conversions, great interface.

Picture Safe - Lock pics, and organize them into folders as well as the order of pics.

Entertainment
myVideos - Download videos off various Internet sites for offline viewing.

Koi Pond - Very nice relaxing digital pond.

Social Networking
mBoxMail - Hotmail! Get all folders, and open links within the app.

Beejive IM - Instant messengar with push notifications. Supports MSN, AIM, Yahoo, Google, and Facebook. Great interface.

Tweetie - One of a a few popular Twitter apps.

Photography
Photogene - Crop, rotate, and add filters to your pics.

Photoforge - Curve tool bring out detail from shadows in pics.

Games
- Racing
Real Racing - The most realistic and best graphics racing game.

- Simulation
Let's Golf - Cartoon golf at it's finest. Lots of different locations/characters.

- Strategy
Uniwar - Turnbased online strategy wargame.

Stickwars - Recommended, but no description provided.

Galcon - Fastpaced online strategy game. A battery killer though.

- Not yet categorize games
Geared - Recommended, but no description given yet.

Business
1Password Pro - Encrypted Password to store Credit Card numbers, membership info, web logins, etc. Automatic login into sites without having to type in usernames and passwords. Syncs to desktop counterpart via LAN.

Reference
Oxford Deluxe - The entire unabridged single volumes Oxford Dictionary and Thesaurus all in a beautiful and easy to use interface. Expensive, but worth it.

Wisdom - Example sentences, and kanji jump make this indispensible for anyone living in Japan or studying Japanese.

Music
Spotify - although a free app, requires a £10/month premium membership. Unlimited access to millions of artists from all 4 major record labels and a host of others. Stream music over wifi/3g/edge, seamless syncronisation of your playlists, and choose playlists to be available offline (tracks download over wifi). This is a truly awesome service and quickly replaced my iPod app - I removed all my music through iTunes sync and set it all up through spotify, no more USB syncing for me! Not available in the US yet, sorry guys. Coming later in the year I believe.

Xewton Music Studio - Keyboard app, an assortment of instruments.

Beatmaker - Beats and sound effects, a DJ sort of app.

Health and Fitness
Bodybook Fitness Journal - Great workout log. Highly customizable. Graphs are superb.

News
Newsstand is quite simply THE best Google Reader syncing RSS app I have used. Feature-rich with landscape, sharing of articles, create & edit google reader folders and subscriptions. Superb UI.

Finance
Billminder - Great app to help you keep track of bills, due dates, account numbers, and creditor contact information. Passcode protection is an option (that I use). 1$ for App, and 1$ a year for push notifications. Great interface, calander view, and icons for quick reference. Also allows for auto pay options.

If you can, please try to list concisely what you find great about your recommended apps. It would be helpful to newbies to the iPhone and even Veterans like myself. Just as example, I've never tried Things, as I don't have WiFi on my computer.

this looks like a personal favorite but i will debate that GoodReader 3.1 at 99 cents actually makes a more worthwhile PDF reader than AirSharing. Just my point of view for this category of fight.

Master Dev that is one hell of a postal count, you will overtake me in another week if you carry on like that! :p

Have any of you played Geared? By far the best app that I have ever played. For something so simple its actually very addictive. I have 4 more levels to go but I have been stuck since last week!

I do have Koi Pond but it has been replaced by....Cat Piano for .99 Not only do you get cat voices as notes on a piano but you also get Grand Piano for the un-bent. There is also a free version, at least when I last looked. My brother thinks it's a total waste of money but he doesn't like cats and meow gets on his nerves. I myself, love the sound. :o It will also drive your dog crazy trying to locate the missing cat.

ColorSplash!

I just used this and Photogene to make my new wallpaper.

What you do is take a picture of whatever you like, make it black and white and then add color to the parts you'd like and then when your done you can reverse it too...very nice apps when put together.

I use the application iNet (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=305242949&mt=8). It's a great network scanner when you're in that wireless subnet.

ToDo - has push notification to remind you of your tasks when it's due

Flightracker Pro - good for those that travel alot. It'll tell you if your flight is arriving on time or delayed, shows which gate you're supposed to be at, and actually tracks the flight path on a map

Wunder Radio - thousands of radio stations, some of which can be played in the background (just like the iPod app)

Starmap Pro - the most advance astronomy app, it even incorporates the magnetometer for easy reference as to what and where you're looking at in the sky

Defender Chronicles - best tower defense game, with RPG element such as gaining levels and buying items

For music: Ocarina by Smule, a real instrument for the iPhone with a great community and lots of tabbed music contributed by users.

Guitar Toolkit: A lot of resources for guitarists in one place. Highly configurable tuner, chord dictionary, metronome (including tempo tap pad to make it easier to figure out the tempo of a song that you're trying to learn). Hardly a day goes by that I don't use it.

Now Playing--a great app for finding movies, linked to reviews from Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes--really great developer who will take the time to write you back if you have issues.

ooTunes--a radio app the way it should be. Lots of features, including a sleep timer, find similar, see the bitrate before you select (great for those times of network congestion), favorites, lyrics, and a cool experimental feature that lets you see what's currently playing on 9 random stations. And a bunch of buttons that I haven't even figured out. Wish I'd found this one first, because its less expensive than some other radio apps out there, and more capable.

Notemaster: simple and easy way to write notes. allow categories and is quick. A better 'Notes'
MemoryInfo: too bad it's no longer available
Docs to Go: MS word on you iPHone. syncs very nicely and easy to use so far

GSPsed shouldn't make this list until it matures a bit. It has way too many bugs. Interesting idea but terrible and buggy implementation. Just read the reviews.
