View Full Version : I'm stuck with 3.1 FW (I have a 3G S)-should I have my iPhone exchanged?

I updated to 3.1 FW, not knowing that you cannot downgrade. And now I'm currently stuck on 3.1. I do not have my ECID SHSH’s on file with Cydia, which means I am unable to downgrade to 3.0/3.0.1. I have the option of going to the AT&T store I bought my iPhone from, and having it exchanged (hopefully with one that is running 3.0/3.0.1 and not 3.1). Should I exchange my iPhone 3G S? If I do exchange it, would there be any benefits, as far being able to run 3.0/3.0.1 FW again goes? I need some advice. Thank you!

Only benefit I could see is that if you get a 3.0/3.0.1 phone you can jailbreak that and have your 3.1 ECID SHSH on file with cydia for when the jailbreak for that comes out.
which is a pretty big benefit.
or you could wait till the 3.1 jailbreak comes out and then have cydia store your ECID but that might take a little longer.

I read (somewhere) that Apple and ATT install 3.1 on all phones before they leave the store. I'm not certain as to the accuracy of these reports.

A few posters have reported that some AT&T stores are not updating the phones to 3.1, but since you will have to go to the Apple store for exchange, chances are pretty slim you will get anything less than 3.1

just be patient and wait for the devteam, hopefully they will find out the exploit and soon release the 3.1jb for 3gs. better than going through all the hassles by exchanging your phone and unlucky to get one with 3.1 already.

What is your justification for the exchange? You updated your firmware and now you can't unlock so you want a new phone??

Ok so there is nothing wrong with the phone so how are you going to get them to exchange it? Just saying you want 3.01 or 3.0 is not a reason that they will exchange for since it is not a defect.

I think you're getting "replaced" and "exchanged" mixed up. I bought my iPhone at the AT&T store less than 30 days ago. AT&T stores have something called the buyer's remorse program. That means within 30 days of purchase for whatever reason you can have your equipment returned for a refund, or exchanged for the same product. However a 10% restocking fee applies to the iPhone-which I am willing to pay. As long as there is no physical damage on the phone. Having an iPhone replaced, is when there is a defect within the phone, you go to the Apple Store, a genius validates the defect, and they issue you a replacement phone. Although as long as you meet the requirements I mentioned you can exchange/return, the AT&T store might still ask why I would be requesting an exchange. In that case I can just tell them that I think my in call volume is seems too low. And I wouldn't be lying either. But usually they don't ask (as long as you qualify you can exchange/return). My in call volume is a bit low-although I'm not sure if it's within spec or not. Anyways, that's if they ask. If they ask I'd have to tell them something. Now I am probably NOT going to exchange my iPhone, considering I haven't had any issues with it, besides the in call volume. Now I MIGHT go through with the exchange process. And that's only if I'd benefit from having an iPhone running 3.0/3.0.1. For now I will be waiting for the 3.1 jailbreak for the 3G S.

Read the policy again. Pretty sure it's only 14 days for iPhone, 30 days for every other phone.

Actually, "Buyers Remorse" is the first 3 days. Anything after that but within the first 30 days is just an exchange. Trust me, I have first-hand experience with this with the AT&T/the iPhone. Buyers Remorse is in the first three days and it doesn't cost you a single cent for anything. After those 3 days but within the first 30 days you may be charged a restocking fee for the equipment and you will be charged for any usage (minutes/text/data) if you are also cancelling a plan. After 30 days you are SOL for equipment returns with no warranty/protection plan and you are charged a cancellation fee if you cancel service.
I learned every detail right before the 3GS came out as I had just bought a 3G literally ONE day before the 3GS was announced (got it Sunday, Apple Conference was Monday). I had been wanting an iPhone since day 1 but was locked into a 2 year contract with Sprint, and AT&T was TERRIBLE in my area at the time. My contract finally ran out and I went straight to Best Buy to grab a 3G. I knew Apple was gonna announce a new iPhone the next day, but I DIDNT know it'd be for a week later as Im not an Apple/Mac follower and usually cellphones aren't announced one week before they come out. I figured it'd be months or longer down the line and I wanted (and needed) my phone right then. Needless to say I was PISSED 24hrs later when I found out an iPhone 2-3x as good as the one I just got for the same price came out in a week and a half. Talked to a really cool AT&T customer service lady and she explained Buyers Remorse and all that and suggested I go that route and completely cancel the contract then just re-sign a new one. Since I got it from Best Buy and not an AT&T/Apple store I couldn't just go in and do an exchange for the new phone since it would be within 39 days because Best Buy wasn't carrying the 3GS right away.

How could I possibly research a phone that nothing was announced about? :rolleyes:
There was a rumor it took video, that was all, no other specs or a release date were announced until that conference. Like I said, I knew a new iPhone was coming, I did not expect it to come in a week. Whatever though, I got one, on launch day, hassle free, and had an extremely good customer service experience throughout, worked great for me.

If you get one with 3.0 or 3.0.1, you will never be able to restore it to anything but 3.1. You would be able to jailbreak it, but if anything gets screwed up and you need to restore, you'll only be able to restore to 3.1.

NOT TRUE, you can always restore to a 3.0 provided you keep that file on your computer. its as simple as holding down your command key while in itunes.

Not if he has 3GS. Apple doesnt sign the 3.0/3.0.1 firmware anymore so it wont work when he tries to restore.
and you hold down the alt key while in itunes not command ;)

I can confirm that this is true. Is there a way around this. I have to do a restore to get the IBSS and IBEC Files. I've looked for a solution but can't find any.

Common sense would dictate that something new would happen that day. If you completely and absolutely cared that you would have the latest iPhone, you should have realized that there would be a chance that something new would be introduced that would affect your Apple purchase.
Yet, good for you, because you did happen to purchase it within a few days of the release. I suppose the only thing I would rely on when gauging Apple, if anything, is the time between Apple events and the 'age' of a specific product.

Everybody knew the new, speedier iPhone was coming, just didn't know the exact day.

Oh so you're calling me stupid? The reason why I was THINKING of having my iPhone 3G S exchanged was because of Apple. Apple was the one that stopped signing 3.0 and 3.0.1 restore files, making it impossible to restore to anything but that lousy 3.1 FW-basically giving us iPhone users that want more freedom the "Finger". And plus, the buyer's remorse program says that within 30 days (past the 3 day period in which the restocking fee doesn't apply-a poster on this thread informed me of this) you can return or exchange your equipment once for any reason. And for your info, I'm NOT going to exchange my iPhone, because my there is nothing wrong with my iPhone. If you actually took the time to read my original post, you'd notice that I was ASKING whether or not I should have my iPhone exchanged. I was NOT saying that I was going to exchange my iPhone. I was asking for advice. And if you're so concerned about inflation, you could have just politely said something like "I don't think you should exchange your iPhone, because I don't think you have a good reason IMO, regardless of what AT&T's policy says. After all exchanges like this contribute to inflated prices." BTW- do you understand that it's ******* like you that start flame wars?
