ok, I figured it out, I posted this in the Apple Discussions thread:

This solves the purple - must be something in the colour profile the recording pa doesn't understand. For the record, my custom profile was made with Color Eyes software.

It would interesting to know if yours is colour profile related, and how you generated that profile. SPyder 2 profiles don't cause the purple, for example.

Also, remember to quit Quicktime X in between - it obviously uses the profile it reads upon loading the app.
