Hello,
I have a 3G iPhone still running 3.0.
Tonight I received a text message at about the same time I was dialing a number and it froze my phone.
I have attempted to hard reset it several times and I get the "apple" boot screen but after about a minute it goes away.
Same thing when docking it. I get the apple then it shuts back down.
Any advice?
Thanks

Can you turn it off? If so let it set for a bit then turn it back on, Hopefully it will reset itself...

Yup. I've let it sit for about an hour. Then I started monkeying with it again.
Can't even call apple! <G>

Try a restore in recovery mode.

Try a restore in recovery mode.
How does one do that? When I plug it in to my dock iTunes doesn't detect it.

Do this:

if that won't work try DFU mode

About to try this, but does it make a difference that the phone is jailbroken?
I'm assuming that "if" this works I'm going to lose my jailbreak as the phone will probably be updated to 3.1 during the process.

It doesn't make a difference. Since you are jailbroken, it is ESPECIALLY important you do DFU mode, it will help solve any problems. Also you will be unjailbroken, and if you hold down option/alt before clicking on restore you can restore to 3.0/3.0.1.

Making progress. Looks like I am IN DFU mode but the message iTunes is telling me is the phone will be loaded with the latest SW. I held down option/alt and I am getting the message about 3.1.

Are you running windows? If so you should've held down shift or control. I forget which. :)

Looks like I'm there. iTunes is looking/asking for a file. Which file do I point it to?

Yes, look on iClarified's guides they have links to the OS downloads from apple's servers. A google search will take you right to the page. Also do you maybe have the 3.0.1 one? That one will work too. If you don't ever/care about unlocking your phone you might as well just update to stock 3.1.

Thanks. I think I'm downloading the correct 3.0 file now (iphone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw)
But your last sentence lost me.
I have no desire/need to unlock, only jailbreak. so what did you mean "update to stock 3.1"?
Looking at the iClarified page they have instructions for JB 3.1. I've been keeping tabs of the progress from the DevTeam but wasn't even aware 3.1 was truly jail breakable yet.
PS Assuming I get this up and going, PM me your PayPal address and I'll slide you a little token of my appreciation.

No you need firmware 1,2. That is for the 3G. The 2,1 is for 3GS. it's about 298 MB in size isnt it? ya the 3G file for 3.0 FW is not that large. Do not try to boot 3GS firmware on a 3G. It just plain won't work and you will have to start all over again.
Sincerely,

Just FYI you shouldn't be downloading that IPSW, that is for the 3G S. 2,1= 3G S. 1,2 = 3G. You should click on my IM icon underneath my avatar, and IM if you need more help/if you get confused. It can be hard if it's your first time doing it. :) I'm online now.
Using iTunes to update to regular 3.1 will update the baseband and possible prevent your phone from being unlocked in the future. You should just update to 3.1 in iTunes and then use Pwnage Tool from there with the 1,2 IPSW.

Well I'm doing the 3.1 update/restore.
I went ahead and went that route since on the iClarified mentions the JB process for 3.1.
AFTER I get the phone backup and running I may go ahead and give that a try........

So you're restoring to regular 3.1 first and then using Pwnage tool? Good choice. :)

Yup. Thanks for your patience and assistance. I was dreading going to ATT tomorrow and having to buy a new (full price phone). Thought for sure my phone was toast.
I'm just pissed I didn't have a list of all my JB apps.

Let's hope it all goes smoothly. I have faith in the Pwnage software. :) Did you make sure to choose expert/simple mode and uncheck the activate box? Hopefully that doesn't make a difference. My phone is unlocked, but I made sure to uncheck the box, and then just activate it with an official AT&T sim card before unlocking it. I find that "hacktivating" it can cause more problems sometimes.

Not quite there yet. It installed the 3.1 SW and is now doing a restore from my last b/u. As soon as this is done I'll start with the Pwnage install.

I would cancel the restore from a backup. Because when you run pwnage tool it is going to erase everything anyway. Also, do you have your info like contacts backed up on your computer? If so, you should "set up as a new phone" instead of restoring from a backup.

Well before I cancel and do the JB "riddle me this joker"...........
When I jailbroke this phone the first time (2.1 I think) I lost everything like you described. With the 3.0 JB the data wasn't lost and the process was easier then the 2.1.
So why the difference?

Because when you jailbroke using 3.0 I am betting anything that you used "redsn0w". It will jailbreak the device without requiring everything to be erased (just like quickpwn used to do), because it doesn't make a custom IPSW, it just jailbreaks the software already one the phone. Redsn0w hasn't been updated for 3.1 yet. They are getting it ready to work with the new iPod touch 3G and the iPhone 3G S. People with those devices have to wait for now.

Your right. I just looked at the folder/files I downloaded and it was/is Redsn0w. So that explains it.
I may just wait until it gets updated then before I JB again. I just remember how much easier it was not having to set everything back up. Plus my 3.0 was getting awfully slow having since JB.

So you decided to hold off on the jailbreak after all that? lol. Suit yourself. :p I only jailbreak for about 4 things.
iRealQuickSMS
5 icon dock
unlock
shuffled ringtones
:D Other than that, I would be on a stock firmware.

Yeah, I'm already thinking I'm going to miss SBSettings, and the one that keeps the phone's orientation from going into landscape, oh and Backgrounder.
And the 5 icon dock is nice as well.
Damnit Spock! May end up doing it sooner rather then later.
Thank you again!!!
