I've got a new MBP 13" (2.26, running 10.6.1)

I'm going to replace the internal with a Seagate Momentus 7200RPM drive. Any reason (heat based) to go with 320 vs. the 500GB?

I do video and photos (hobby, not pro), so I'd like to stay with 7200RPM.

Related question: I've read here and there issues w/replacing the internal drive -- that the computer is having trouble recognizing the drive. Is this a real issue, or is it fixed.

Or.... since i don't need the full 500GB right away (was thinking "future proof") I should get the 320, and get a SSD later when the prices drop (maybe even doing the dual internal drive thing)...

Do 320 7200RPM drives generally run cooler than 500GB (let's say within the same brand)?

Have you heard about the DIY option of replacing the SATA optical drive for an HDD? You could keep your stock HDD in for boot/OS/apps, and use the second drive for docs.

I've heard about it. Wouldn't there be heat issues, though, with two HDD spinning up? I've got MB issues on my iMac due to heat, so I'm a little gun-shy on heat issues.

500GB. There's no downside to having more storage and I think it's stupid to even consider anything smaller given the cost of HD media these days.

And don't be fooled that a 7200rpm drive is going to make that much more difference with video production. It's what's on your motherboard that matters for this. 5400's are quieter, use a tad bit less juice and are a lot cheaper.

Buying a 320GB instead of 500GB to save money for an SSD later seems pretty stupid since the difference in price is really small. Just go with the 500GB, you shouldn't have any problems.

Well, looking more at the options, the only 500GB 7200 seems to be Seagate momentus, which is showing a lot of QC issues. But the performance of the 500GB WD Blue 5400 doesn't seem that much slower, and I'm assuming it's likely to be quieter and cooler?
