I would understand a thong to be an item of underwear, or something you might sing if you have a lisp. The footwear acquired by pengpai would appear to be a pair of flip flops.

I beg to differ, seeing as that term has changed in recent years:

Slippers = feet warmers, bedtime wear
Sandals = casual wear, exposes some of the feet
Flip flops = casual wear, exposes nearly all of the feet
Thongs = looks good on a hot chick
