So I just bought my Apple TV and now want to expand its capabilities to:
1 - access NAS
2 - play multiple file formats

So far, I've come accross Patchstick.ca and aTVFlash as thje easiest solutions. ...are there better ones? Between these two solutions and the AwkwardTV site, I'm totally confused.

I've read that Patchstick.ca requires that I download the Apple TV firmware from them...I'm not very keen on that actually unless I can download it directly from Apple; can I?? Is this also a requirement for aTVFlash? Also, I can't even find the download link for Patchstick.ca

Please keep in mind that I am a Apple TV noob when replying ;)

I just did the hack two days ago and it went perfect. I did the free one that everyone talks about.

Go to this page and download the installer for your system.

Download this file and point the software to this file.

you can follow the instructions on the first link after you do that. I was having trouble finding the second link.... That is KEY!
