I have seen posts of Touchs being received with serial numbers that indicate that they were only manufactured 4 days prior to delivery so it may be hot of the press and coming straight from the factory warehouse.

The 32GB refurb that I ordered this week was shipped via FedEx from Hong Kong, also. Like you, my previous order (a refurbed 8GB 3g Nano) was shipped from California, although I don't recall the carrier.
How do you read the serial number to determine the date of manufacture?

The iPods are manufactured in China, so it's entirely possible they ship directly.

Apparently the 3rd digit indicates the year and the 4th and 5th digits the week of manufacture, so 939 would be the 39th week of 2009.

My 4 refurb iPod family items have shipped as follows:
Nov 10, 2008, ordered 3g Nano's from the refurb store:
pink: china
blue: california
black: california
July 2009, 2g 8gb Touch: Kentucky
I figure that the pink one was "new", the other 2 might have still been new, and that my Touch was a refurb.
Most people i know that have order iPod's have them ship from China.

When I ordered the 3rd gen itouch on 9 Sep it shipped from Kunshan China to Shanghai to Anchorage then Memphis before coming to Seattle. So I am guessing that they are all coming direct from China if you go through the Apple online store.

Ah, thank you. I'll have to look at mine when it arrives.

Most products are "made-to-order" in a sense and ship right from the factory.

My 64 GB touch is still on the way!
Kunshan, CN --> Shanghai, CN --> Anchorage, AK --> Newark, NJ --> etc...
It is taking quite a while to get here, I ordered it on the 14th...
(I am not very patient if you can tell)

Based on your name, I assume you or someone you know have spent time on Kwajalein Island... Just imagine if it had to go from China to Anchorage to Memphis to Kwaj!

Yup was there:D in mid 80s. Since you recognized it I am assuming you were there as well. And yes I am glad it didn't take this route to get there. Although it probably would have gone to Hono from China. Anyway it arrived the day after it left Memphis. Been having fun with it ever since.
