Updating? New Imacs? Tablets? iPod touch with Camera? Actually, I hope it is an apple Game system based onApple TV. or Apple tv connected to the app store. Darnit, i want something cool.
i hope so for something, not just taking away a cable or something
It happened on me right at midnight, it took me a minute to decide what to do about it.

34 countries out.

yeah, it is def down but i doubt we're getting a revised ipod touch w/ the camera. cuz its been what. 1 to 2 weeks. It would been pointless to announce the camera less touch if apple was coming out with a cam in just 2 weeks. i think it has to do with the apple tv if anything since there have been price drops and such. maybe a laptop mini- update?

I don't think it will be a tablet or anything, though, Jobso would want to announce that, not just quietly add it to the store.

Why does Apple need to take their entire store offline just to make some minor updates? Is their merchant tech that backward? Imagine if Amazon, ebay or any other major web retailer had to close the entire front end, just because they add a new line item or change the price!

If they are adding some new product then I can understand maybe that they want to be their usual melodramatic self, but if this is just regular maintenance, then it is pathetic that they need to go totally offline.

I'm hoping for a Mac Pro quad speed bump, but I fear that hope will be in vain. :p

Still down! How long does maintenance last????

Maybe it is new iMacs after all? It's be great for Apple to get new flagship hardware out just ahead of Win7. :apple:

They can't rebuild the site offline and then switch the old out for the new? It's not like they have to take the site to the shop and get the tires balanced, why would the store be down?? I know that's just how they do it, but it seems silly.

Exactly what I was about to post. I'd guess Amazon would lose millions if they done this as often as Apple do.

Its part of apple, by doing this, they create speculation and excited, that wouldn't be there if they just 'added' it

But if they're not adding anything, aren't they just losing revenue just for the sake of maintenance? What needs maintaining anyway?

Maybe it's an iTunes-esque site revamp.

It gets tired after a while.

I was not aware that they did regular maintenance every Sunday that required the site to be down. That's a new one on me. But if so it is even more pathetic. I can somehow forgive taking the store offline when there is a pre-announced even and they want to create/support the buzz. That's part of their narcissistic marketing approach and bloated sense of importance they seem to have for every little announcement, no matter how mundane it is. But to bring the site down every week. That just sends the signal to me that you should not run e-commerce on apple kit. Harsh and incorrect i know, but it gives a negative impression of the flexibility of an Apple commercial platform in my mind.

I don't think it's every Sunday but the maintenance shut downs are fairly regular.

As far as I know, there have never been any new products updated on the Store on a Sunday. I can't think of any other major on-line retailers who close their site down like this.

Let's be sensible guys! There are certainly going to be no new iMacs or major hardware revisions out of the blue. Maybe some minor price changes in the light of rumours of new iMacs and Macbook revisions later next month but I don't think we'll see anything of magnitude. It can be done in less than an hour... Think about keynotes, it's down for like 30 minutes.

mickbab
Sep 20, 2009, 08:09 AM
Maybe they are doing some sort of complete rebuild.
I think there would have to be some sort of problem here because even the biggest product launch can't take this long.

It can be done in less than an hour... Think about keynotes, it's down for like 30 minutes.

For the iPod event the other week it went down a couple of hours before the keynote started and came back up just after it finished. We've had similar downtime for most other keynotes in recent years.

The usual Tuesday updates usually go down about 11:30 GMT and come back up around 13:30. I know this because the new stuff always comes out just after my lunch break has finished. :)

nullx86
Sep 20, 2009, 08:18 AM
A rebuild seems more logical considering the store has the iTunes 8 theme, and some of the store parts were messing up the other night when I purchased my iMac (I had to purchase it about 7 times before it went thru, kept saying it timed out, when it wasnt)

99% of the time, product releases are on Tuesdays. (Unless there's a Monday holiday that week). They wouldn't update products on a weekend because Apple's PR department doesn't work weekends.

Unless the iMac update is more than a speed boost and a price drop, then we won't be seeing a media event for it. They'll be announced via press release.

:runs: :D

If the Apple Store ran on Windows, then it would be working ONLY on Sundays for a few hours, if you're lucky, and offline for the rest of the week for "maintenance" (aka malware removal, rebooting, re-installing, finding which computer crashed the system just because a mouse was unplugged for cleaning and plugged in again, etc.). ;)

These days there should be no reason at all to take an entire website down for regular "maintenence", nor when simply adding products to a webstore, nor even for a complete redesign of the website.

They didnt take down the site when apple changed the header back in 2007 from the gell like tabs to the gray buttons. though I remember a lot of coding, and miss placed images all over the place (like the ipod pages were for the first few hours of being up)
