I haven't found any mention of the Shoreline neoprene sleeves that MicroCenter sells fairly cheaply (12" iBook sleeve is $20):
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0162836
They seem similar to Shinza - http://www.shinza.com
Has anyone tried the Shoreline sleeves? is the neoprene too thin to be effective for anything?

This is pretty similar to the list I saw as a sticky on macnn.com in the PowerBook forum. That forum is great because everyone who owns these different bags had added their own persective after ownership.

Anyone try the Radtech PowerSleeve.
Is it as good as it sounds? What sort of drop protection does it offer, cuz all it looks like is two pices of cloth sewn together with Powerbook on it. Also, I think the fact that it says Powerbook screams steal me in University.

The RadTech sleeve offers no drop protection what-so-ever. Its used for scratch protection only. So long as you don't walk away from your Powerbook no one will be able to steal it anyway :) You could put a sign that says "Take this laptop on it" and so long as you stay with it no one has a chance.

It's the only one of it's kind. It is made out of a microfiber material, and they're the only company to make sleeves from that material.

I wish you could get it without the "PowerBook" branding like you can the ScreensaveRz. Ah well, I'm happy with my Tucano Second Skin.

Do you guys know of a bag that fits a Powerbook 12", and is fairly cheap (like under $75). Finding a bag for a 12" is difficult.
*EDIT*
I found one! The Crumper McBain's Lovechild, Small. Looks great. Is it too small to hold the PB 12", AC Adaper, a mouse, maybe a few other cables or something? It doesnt look like it has any pockets, but maybe it has some inside?

Awesome list. Nice work. It's similar to the one on macnn but I think we should have one too.
So here is my vote for a sticky too.
Also don't forget Samsonite (http://www.samsonite.com)
I don't really like the ones they have in the US shop, but the ones in the German shop are awesome. I have the Inventure Series 400 ITC one in black and it is really nice. Lots of pockets, you can put a lock on the zippers, hole for headphones, etc.

Great work Celeron, I just ordered a foofbag (http://www.foofbag.com) as a fun alternative to my Tucano second skin. I can't wait to see what it's like. I been in contact with them a fair bit and they're really nice people to deal with.

I've narrowed down my possible laptop cases to the Crumpler School Hymm 15" or the Booq Powersleeve14. I've been lucky enough to see pictures of both, with powerbooks in them, but I just can't seem to make a final decision. Ultimately, I would like to be able to throw it in a simple backpack like this Jansport Super Break (http://www.ebags.com/jansport/super_break/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=1) But which ever I pick would have to have plenty of padding. ANy good or bad expereinces with either bag?

I have the PowerSleeve12 for my Powerbook and I have no complaints at all. It is very well made and features a good amount of padding. I vote for the Powersleeve. It fits nicely in my Eastpak backpack too.

sorry mem, but still haven't received the school hymn so can't do that comparison for you (supply issues with crumpler i think - eta early august :( )
but the booq is a very good sleeve, very well padded and offers a lot of protection. also has the two zipper compartments on the flap and at the back, good for cleaning cloths, a magazine or two, couple of cds.
one observation about the booq - it does not completely enclose the powerbook they same way the school hymn does. there is a tiny gap/space at the top of the sleeve where the flap folds over the main compartment. howeer i get the vague feeling that the booq is better padded than the crumpler, but can't yet confirm..!

It's a different aesthetic, not funky or wacked, but I've always been a big fan of Tumi bags. Their site, tumi.com has a ton of bags that cater to a more conservative yet classic style.
I've seen the booq bags and they look really well designed. My friend owns one and has no complaints with them.
Lastly, I also have an Oakley backpack which gets lots of rave reviews. I have one of the original Icon bags and for some reason the newer ones seem less well made but what's nice is there's plenty of room for everything I need and they fit under airplane seats or in the compartment above. http://oakley.com/catalog/gear/gearbags/
My wife thinks I'm addicted to bags. She's probably right...

The slightly bigger one is for the ibook. I had one for mine and although my pb fits in it too it is kind of loose in it.

Thanks -- looks like the larger one is about 1cm x 1cm bigger. I went to Apple's page and looked at the sizes more carefully -- I never noticed there was such a difference in the sizes between the two -- I always thought the PB was just thinner....

OK, I've read all the threads (here and at Macnn.com) and I'm down to 5 sleeves for my 12" iBook. I need help from people who own these. I know there are plenty of others out there but these 5 fit my needs (very tight fit, very slim profile, no handles/pockets/etc, some light impact protection).
1. Crumpler School Hymn: this is my favorite but at $50 + shipping it is very expensive for just a sleeve. I guess the question would be, is it worth it? Most sleeves are around $30 and I can get the Turcano Second Skin for under $20 so how can I justify the Crumpler?
2. Marware SportFolio: they list the BarracudaSkin for the iBook and the SharkSkin for the 12" PB. I don't like the look of the Barracuda at all. Can my iBook squeeze into the SharkSkin? Do either of these look cheesy? How much protection do they offer? They seem a bit thick, are they?
3. Tucano Second Skin: Great price. How much protection does it offer? Is it only for scratch protection or can in handle light impact also?
4. Shinza ZeroShock: I like its protection, but I'm not sure about the materials and its "squishyness". Price is ok.
5. Radtech Glove: Does this come in horizontal? How much protection? Is it just for scratches?
If I could hold these in my hand my decision would be easy. It is hard to judge these by pics on the web.
any help you can provide is appriecated.

I recently picked myself up a Kensington Saddlebag Sport laptop backpack.
http://www.kensington.com/html/3208.html
I really like it, lots of padding, waterproof, and the sleeve for the powerbook is suspended off the bottom of the pack. That way if you drop it the powerbook can't hit the ground. It also has a little waterproof compartment at the top of the bag for your ipod or mp3 player, with a little opening for where the headphones come out. Still waiting for my ipod so I haven't had a chance to check that out yet.
I was able to bring my Canon Powershot G3 camera, wide angel lens, macro lens's, logitech wheel mouse, the power adapter, powerbook, 2 magazines, and a hardcover, sketchbook, memory card reader, a dvd, and pencils quite comfortably this weekend in the backpack.
It was also affordablee. I was looking at the crumplers locally and they were over 180 canadian, this one I found for 90 canadian. Thus far I would highly recommend this product.

Just thought I'd mention that I got my Booq Powersleeve 14 for my 15 in Powerbook and am very pleased with it. It shipped the same day I ordered it and Booq customer service was very helpful. A few things about the Sleeve itself:
Pros:
Padding is thick all around
Sides are much harder than I expected...not hard plastic but much sturdier than I expected
Nice design
Fits perfectly in a very modest size backpack
Very cool Booq logo (looks the same rightside up as upside down! :p )
Comfortable handle and shoulder strap.
Cons:
Top is just a flap that comes down and buckles-leaves a bit of the PB exposed.
I would prefer a sturdier buckle-this one is just plastic and not the one that's pictured on the website. It's not very substantial, but luckily it doesn't support much of the PB's weight.
All in all I'd say about 4/5 stars. I don't think I would use it by itself (in the event of rain) but it is perfect for putting in my backpack!

If you want a big bag to carry other stuff, Crumpler's Very Busy Man is nice. I've got that and a Crumpler McBain's Lovechild. I got the Lovechild because I was so happy with the water resistance of the VBM. It looks to be quite protective as well, but I just got it this summer so the real test is still to come!

Anyone try the Radtech PowerSleeve.
Is it as good as it sounds? What sort of drop protection does it offer, cuz all it looks like is two pices of cloth sewn together with Powerbook on it.
i bought one, though i haven't actually used it yet. I like it because, i can stick the Pb in another bag, and the sleave doesn't take up a lot of space (like most out there, the other recom. is acmemade.com, but its pricey) but prevents scratches on the PB, which is what i bought it for. and yes it is two pieces of cloth, so it offers zero drop protection.
Also, I think the fact that it says Powerbook screams steal me in University.
interestingly enough thats what it says on the other side. :)

I've posted my review with photos of the Tucano SecondSkin sleeve and the Tucano Cobra messenger bag here (http://www.geocities.com/rilina/laptop.html). Hope it is useful to people on the market.
Short version: The bag is great if you want a compact, stylish, inexpensive bag designed for 12" laptops with moderate storage space. The sleeve is quite attractive too. Caveats: (1) Probably not enough storage for students and (2) 12" iBook, once in the sleeve, doesn't fit in the padded laptop section (though it fits quite perfectly otherwise -- I think the bag was simply designed to be used without a sleeve on the laptop). I'm told powerbooks in sleeves do fit the Tucano messenger bags' laptop sections.
Unless you plan to carry your laptop in a number of different bags, I'd advise getting just the sleeve (to use in the bag of your choice) or just the bag if you own a 12" iBook.
Both can be purchased from royalbusiness.com for a combined total of less than $50.

So I think i need a little guidance here. I was thinking of buying a bookbag case but I feel like they are less protective of the laptop. The back of the bookbag seems kind of weak, is this just the models I have looked at or is it not an issue? Also does a sleeve serve any other purpose than keep off dust and such?

a little more detail would be helpful. what kind of book bag were you looking at (brand, style, etc.)? what else will you be carrying with your laptop and where (school, work, other)? do you mean a sleeve case or a thin sleeve (like the radtech powersleeve)?

Got the Boog Viper M. Even though it says it's for the 14" iBook it seems just a tad big. Otherwise it seems like good protection. My wife says that she wished it had a handle and a pocket for her mouse. Geeeeez, I wanted to get her an actual bag but she said that she just wanted a sleeve. Oh well, bag will probably be next. FYI, shipping was fast. All in all a good experience. Boog does have a sleeve for a 15" PB that "fits like a glove". That's my next project ;) . Cheers

I picked up a maccase 12" sleeve for $25--this is at the bottom end of sleeves and you get what you pay for.
http://www.jambags.com/MacCase%20Sleeves.htm
It certainly isn't a bad case, but it is quite thin and light so it's not for shock protection. It also is partially open at the end and has a grill on the bottom so not waterproof either (though the openings probably help heat dissipation if you leave your pbook/ibook in sleep mode).
I just needed a sleeve so I could fit my laptop in my backpack's nook (meant for larger notebooks) without it being loose. So this sleeve does the job perfectly.
Summary: if you need a cheap sleeve to prevent scratches and scuffs while your laptop is in a briefcase, backpack, etc., this does the job perfectly. But if you need more serious protection, especially when you carry just the laptop alone, get a more rugged case.

I'm waiting for my new 15" PB to leave China right now, so I need atleast a sleeve for it. I have one that came with my moms laptop briefcase (she got it at target, it fits a 14" iBook perfectly) but I don't know if it'll be too small for the PB. I actually want a bag too, since I just have a canvas army messenger bag thats about 16" wide, so with all my textbooks and stuff, I'm not sure if it'll be big enough.
Ok, so heres where I get picky. I like the crumpler bags due to the fact that they're not stiff. I HATE stiff bags. But they are a little too expensive. Something like the wonder weenie or the very busy man. Only ALL BLACK. hahahah. I know. I should probably just stick with my bag and buy a sleeve. I think the maccase is ok and in my price range but I'd get a different sleeve.

No one's mentioned Brenthaven!
Well I'm very picky about my bags. Up until recently Brenthaven only made rock-solid, indestructable black bags, that were about as exciting as my kid brother's mashed grapes.
But this new urban bag (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/71901/wo/Mt3y6eIjwhbl21BRpWF29JQrPNm/1.0.11.1.0.6.25.7.11.7.3) is my perfect bag. Well worth the price, it has this cool zipper design that fits a 14" iBook, 15" or 12" Powerbook... and easily a 13.3" in the future... (I can only dream).
I could just be a sucker for earthtone messenger bags, but I really think Brenthaven got it right this time.

Hi, I have a bit of an odd request. I want a sleve or case that actually goes on a 12" PowerBook- somehow- so that I can keep it on when using the PB. I saw the Biolithic- but it looks like you need to take of the top cover to open the computer. Can anyone vouch for this or recommend other models? Thanks.

Just thought I'd mention that I got my Booq Powersleeve 14 for my 15 in Powerbook and am very pleased with it. It shipped the same day I ordered it and Booq customer service was very helpful. A few things about the Sleeve itself:
(EDIT)
Cons:
Top is just a flap that comes down and buckles-leaves a bit of the PB exposed.
I would prefer a sturdier buckle-this one is just plastic and not the one that's pictured on the website. It's not very substantial, but luckily it doesn't support much of the PB's weight.
Would a PS15 not solve the PB 'exposure' issue?
I've done a fair bit of research and am stuck at whether to go for a PS 14/15 or thinner sleeve like a Tucano Second Skin. Anyone tried the PS 15 with a PB 15?
Cheers

Couldn't wait for the G5 any longer as my display went crazy and they wanted minimum $500 to fix it.....gave in...got the new G4 superdrive and loving it so far....was wondering about personalizing it...any ideas? Love to do something sleek/classy or funky to the exterior...Also on my old G4 I had a great handle put on that served as a stand also- anyone know about putting a handle on the new one - doesn't seem to be a place for it.

I'm planning on re-using my Swiss army messenger bag, with the Swiss Army CS2 laptop sleeve for a 15" PB. The CS2 sleeve is super shock resistant, and both sleeve and messenger bag are water resistant. I've used this for over a year and a half, and it still looks new.

I just bought a refurbished iBook 12" from the Apple Store yesterday, but I am looking for a sleeve now. I would like something thin, but with enough padding. I will be attending the UW next year, but I think if I get a sleeve I can just throw it in my backpack which is already waterproofed. Anyways, I saw that Macally is coming out with a new memory foam sleeve, and I like the looks but am worried about the protection. I've narrowed my choices down to about 4 sleeves and would appreciate any comments you might have on these sleeves.
1. Booq Vyper XS- Heard it fits good, but out of stock until mid-April and do the zippers scratch the iBook?
2. Macally 12" iBook Neoprene Memory Foam Case - Looks very good, and great price, but worried about protection from memory foam
3. Spire USA Boot- Looks ok, but haven't heard much feedback about it
4. InCase iBook sleeve- Looks very nice, but is it really worth the high price ($50)?
Thanks in Advance, all of you give great advice! :D

I've no experience with the 4 you listed, however, protection was my #1 concern as well for my new PB. The Shinza (http://shinza.com/product_info.php?products_id=45&osCsid=a829845605eb15e799b72d5756f44ae3) is actually 29.95 and is built really well. It's got extra padding on all four edges and seems very well built. Of course the ultimate test would be dropping it but.... :D

My 2 cents
I actually bought a Timbuk2 Commute and the Brenthaven Flex Fusion (which I have yet to find a review.)
Timbuk2 was 99USD, While the Brenthaven was 79USD with student discount, while usually 129USD.
I bought the Brenthaven bc it is the toughest laptop messenger bag made. It's got tons of pockets, and is very well padded.
I bought the Timbuk2 Commute bc it is a good all around bag. It also doesn't look like a laptop bag.
The Brenthaven bag has a removable sleave while the Timbuk2 (T2 for now on) has a built in pocket
IMHO, The Brenthaven is better for travel, and the T2 is better for local travel ie college campus and coffee shop.
I will keep both.
The T2 has less pockets but more space for books and notebooks. The Flex Fusion (now FF) has alot of protection, but besides computer gear, you can barely fit anything in the bag but a couple of slim magazines despite 20+ pockets.
Test One
If I had to throw my PB out a 2nd story window, which case would i prefer?
Brenthaven, without a doubt.
Test Two
If I was a college student that wanted both my notebooks and PB in the classroom, I would pick T2
Test Three
They are both great, that is why i am keeping both. I can use the T2 as a normal bag too, magazines fit perfectly in the laptop pocket. Also Bigger books.
The Brenthaven Flex Fusion is designed to protect your PB.
The T2 is designed to carry your PB + other things
It all depends on your environment

Anyone familiar with Crumpler Shrinkle? It holds a laptop and camera gear, sounds like it fits my needs, but how much space is there for other stuff? (books, papers, ect.)
I found a helpful review online...but anyone out there with more opinions?
Cheers
Milesar, I looked at the Shrinkle (and the other two similar) in a shop and they were all huge! It was a year ago so I'm afraid I can't help you with specifics, but all three of those type bags are massive, far bigger than I had imagined seeing it as a picture on the net. Apparently you can also remove the photo section padding and make more space if you don't need your camera that day.
If you can afford them!!!

mem: I am averse to carrying computer bags as in my opinion you might as well have a "please mug me" placard draped around your neck, particularly in certain parts of London I commute through.
For this reason I tend to carry instead a standard battered leather briefcase that has a central pocket that I place my 15" powerbook within.
To ensure the PB doesn't get knocked to pieces I bought a Crumpler School Hymn sleeve and its perfect for the job. It has a hard external cover, lightly foamed on the inside with a strong zip forming a very snugfit around the PB. I love it.
If you have - or are going for - a computer bag they will invariably have a purpose built padded zone for the PB so you can probably get away with a Tucano second skin, which are very nice.
However for my needs, with the hard external skin the School Hymn provides that extra level of security that enables me to carry it safely in my old briefcase or in fact any case, without fear of other bits and bobs inside the bag pressing on the PB etc.
Hope that helps

Wow, i'm now entering the world of cases and bags... considering things I never thought I would.
So I'm thinking of a Booq Vyper M to be placed into a Crumpler Very Busy Man.

Anyone have experiences with these bags?
Thanks.

After buying my 17" powerbook this thread was a Godsend. I ended up buying an Acmemade felt bag and it's fantastic - I use it, even when I'm not carrying my PB, for carrying documents iPod etc.
The only problem I've had is that the flap fixings broke on the first one - Acmemade replaced it, including postage costs to and from the US, without any quibbles.
Unfortunately my new one has had the same problem. But to be honest I think that's to do with me trying to pack too much into the front pocket, like my video camera... :o

Sams club here in Phoenix has a Samsonite 17" notebook case for $29.95. Fits my 17" Powerbook like a glove. 10 year warranty. I've been reading through this and it is full of lots of good places but I was wondering if anyone reccomended something specifically for a 14 inch screen ibook. I checked out the booq site but they don't make anything special for this and also their viper sleeve or whatever only came made for the 15 inch powerbook and said the ibook would fit loosely.

Does anybody here currently have one of these being used for a 12" iBook:
Crumpler neoprene sleeve -The Gimp 12" Standard-blk/orange
Or a Crippy Duck
I'd love to know what you think of them as they look the business and when I get (tic, toc, tic toc) my iBook I'll probably go for one of these.

Hello greenguy4! I actually purchased the BP3 System and I must say that it is a bit bulky for me (I'm a girl), but it does fit my 15" PB along with my large binder and other items needed for school. I purchased their "system" because of the fact that they had other items included with it. The system that I purchased was with their PowerSleeve which I currently don't use as much because I need to also carry my binder and other items. I also got a Vyper sleeve which I'm waiting for shipping on so we'll see how that goes. I hope that helps you. The Boa does not seem to bulky and their 2006 version is currently out of stock.

I have recently purchased a 12" powerbook. Now I need a sleeve.
I started looking for one. My criteria were a very snug fit, so I won't waste more space and that the computer won't slide around in the sleeve. I was also looking into a less boring look than the regular black.
ANyway, I am down to crumpler scholl hymn 12 and segai now.
From what I read from the reviews, the crumpler is actually a not so snug fit for the 12" powerbook. They give domensions. but my understanding is that often the dimesnsions given are not the actual measurements, but the dimensions of the computer it is "meant" for. Is this everyone's opinion or are the reviews exagerated?
I could not find any reviews about the segai ( http://www.segai.com ). So, if anybody could tell me if they have the sleeve if it fits the 12" powerbook snugly, that would be wonderful.
Also, I was first leaning more towards the crumpler since it has a semi-hard sehll and I thought that would be better protection than the thick neoprene material of the segai. But then, I am worried that if it is not going to be a snug fit, it may start hitting the shell. Is that the case?
What would you say about the protection the crumpler school hymn 12 and the segai 12" powerbook sleeve offer?
Thanks a lot!

I have a 15" PB and had the same dilemma as you. I went with the Crumpler because of the semi-rigid material and the soft lining. Also, it's not much bigger/thicker than the PB itself. I like that because I put it into another bag, my backpack or other bag. Sometimes I can just carry it like a book.
The Crumpler School Hymn fit the 15" snugly. If the 12" Crumpler doesn't fit as snugly, you can probably add some foam to it to make it fit better.
The neoprene in the Segai is good padding for soft bumps. However, if you'r e going to be rough (nobody means to be) then the Crumpler would be better.
I'm very happy with the Crumpler.
Good luck!

I went with the BooqBag Powersleeve (http://www.booqbags.com/Detail.bok?no=21).
They had good email communication, but no response to two messages left on voice mail. I was wanting to add the Vyper (http://www.booqbags.com/Detail.bok?no=93) . Glad they didn't respond. I have no need for a Vyper after seeing the PowerSleeve. The PowerSleeve is small enough to put the PB in there and then put in a larger bag, suitcase, backpack, etc. It also has a zippered bag large enough for the power adapter with our without the extension and a zippered compartment on the rear side for legal sized file (small) or individual sheets of paper. Perfect solution for me.

Love the Victorinox stuff and they are really durable and for the price you pay, I think they include some form of insurance for the bag, that if you lose it, it will be tracked back to you (provided you register it of course).
I was tossing between Swiss Army and Kenneth Cole, and in the end, since I get a discount at KC's I bought this instead.

Hey greenguy4! Yes, to me, it was rather bulky, but it does allow me to put lots of stuff in the front pockets including a 2" 3 ring binder, a few books, and other things. Keep in mind that I am a woman and don't have broad shoulders so the straps are a bit wide for me. :) However, I don't regret purchasing it because it has lots of pockets to keep stuff in. There are two side pockets and a host of other pockets inside and outside. I even just recently found out there is another pocket on the side that is a little hidden. That was a nice surprise. Are you thinking about going with the BP3?

Thanks Cotton, I'm seriously considering it now. I've got a 12" PowerBook though, but I imagine it also fits well. The reason I'm now definitely considering it is I droppped my PowerBook yesterday  It was less than a foot drop, but was still terrifying and there's now a slight buckle where the CD slot is. Well, there was, I hammered it out with a big hammer :D
So, it made me realise something regarding bags. I dropped it as I was taking it out of my bag, to then unzip the sleeve on a table. If I had had a proper laptop bag, I wouldn't have bothered with a sleeve, and it would have hit the floor unprotected. So I definitely think a really tough sleeve's the way to go for me, cause if I'd had one yesterday it would have bounced, and my heart wouldn't have *actually* stopped, and I wouldn't have felt sick for an hour afterwards. :)

Oh Lau, just you saying that your PB dropped to the floor and you hammered it out with a hammer made me go into shock! ;) However, I am glad that you are currently seriuosly considering something (anything) to protect your PB from getting dented again. I hope that nothing was seriously damaged, but I do know that the PBs do have this thing where they protect the HD when it "senses" a drop. I don't know how they do it, but it is cool that at least Apple thought about that one. :) Good luck and I hope you get your sleeve quick!

I have a booq Vyper XS for my 12" powerbook and I would recommend it without hesitation. I was looking for something low profile that would slid into another bag, but that provided more protection than just a neoprene type sleeve. I like that it's semi rigid and the ballistic nylon matched my vertical brief just perfect.

Hey Piarco75! You might be able to fit the Vyper into the Crumpler bag. The Vyper is snug to fit for the 15" PB and from looking at the picture of the inside of the Crumpler bag you mentioned, it seems like the Vyper would fit in there. Hope that helps!

I just ordered a booq boa.xs. Have not received it yet, but at 2.5 lbs it weighs just 8 oz. more than their mamba.xs messenger bag. Not to mention the fact that it's on sale for $79.95 at the moment (see the coupon code on the page linked above). I wanted small and light, but a comfortable backpack design. It was hard to find something small enough that I would not be tempted to carry too much crap. I'm hoping this fits the bill--imagine I'll know soon.

After getting my powerbook I needed something to keep my precious safe and clear from harm. I had a look at various options but the ones that leapt to mind were the Crumpler Wee Bee and the Tucano Second Skin
Crumpler Wee Bee
This is a tiny little bag for the 12in powerbook. I cannot believe how well made this bag is, material is top quality as is the seems and stiching. There is plenty of velcro to keep all the flaps in place. Opening it gives access to a small front pocket with a velcro opening I've put my network and phone cable in there. On the main flap is a small net pocket with a zip for smaller items. The powerbook has its own special slot with a large flap holding it securly in place.
There is space inside to put a fair bit of stuff along with your powerbook. The inside is a bright orange material which looks fairly waterproof which is a bonus.
The strap is nice and comfy with a pad for your shoulder.
Overall its very impressive and looks like it would take a lot of abuse without any problems.
I got mine for £51 inc vat and shipping from http://we-sell-crumpler.co.uk/index.asp it took a few days to arrive as it wasn't in stock at the time but they pulled out all the stops and even shipped it direct from the supplier for me which was very good. I emailed them and got a very quick response from Paula who answered my questions and helped me out. They are the cheapest by some margin so its well worth a look if you are after a crumpler bag.
One of its biggest plus's is that it looks nothing like your normal laptop bag so thieves wont be drawn to it when you are out and about.

Tucano Second Skin Black 12in
This case is very different from the crumpler its aimed at people who want to chuck there powerbook in any old bag. Its a perfect fit and seems very well made. It provides quite a bit of padding but I dont see the powerbook surviving drops for massive heights in this case, but it would help things a lot.
Its quick to put the powerbook in and you can tie it up with the wee bee for extra protection as it just fits into the slot for the powerbook.
My main critisms of this is all the silly writing on the outside I'd prefer a simple logo as it tells everyone you have a very expensive laptop for stealing.
I got mine from the local apple reseller it cost £25 which is far too expensive for me, you can get it for £16.99 online but have to pay a fair bit of shipping with most of the stores I looked at (9.99 in one!!) As no where had the in stock I just bit the bullet and got it.

Has anyone tried Crumpler's "Sheep Scarer" backpack?
Is it comfortable? Roughly how much does it weigh (I can't seem to find the weight on the Crumpler site)?

REI has the '04 model on clearance. Lists the weight as 2 lbs. 11 oz., so it's just 3 oz. heavier than the boa.xs. Exterior dimensions are, however, MUCH larger. This might be good for most, but I'm looking to avoid being tempted to carry stuff. My boa.xs arrives tomorrow. I'll post once I receive it.

Got it today. It is perfect for my use. Straps are very comfortable. Size is TINY. We're talking just a touch larger than most sleeves. My 12" pb fits well in the laptop pocket. There's room for about another 2" in length (as it goes in, but width in terms of screen). Beyond the laptop pocket there are two zippered sections and an iPod pocket. The larger of the two sections can handle a book and a few file folders. The smaller section has several pockets for cables, etc. If you're looking for something about the size of sleeve w/ a few pockets, but want comfy backpack straps rather than a shoulder strap, the boa.xs is the ticket. If you're looking for something that will hold more than your laptop, necessary cables, a mouse, and a book, go elsewhere.

I'm curious if any of you have the new Booq Boa? I'm interested in getting one. Their customer service department recommended I get the older version (either Boa.xs or Boa.xm system) since I have a 12" powerbook and the laptop compartment on the new Boa.XM is designed for a 15". But I'm thinking with a powersleeve 12, it will still work OK. I think the styling of the new pack is better, but would be interested to hear your opinions...

I just came across this on the STM website - it's made of Shinza Zero Shock type material, but (in my opinion) 345 times more beautiful!
Just thought I'd share (I think I'll wait until it's available in the UK before I splash out on the khaki one...mmm).

I'm buying a 12" powerbook soon (whenever apple decides to update), and I've narrowed down my case choices to
1. booq vyper
2. shinza
3. crumpler school hymn
does anyone have experience have good/bad reviews of these? how much impact protection do they give? I know that the crumpler is the only one that has a hard shell...but I'm worried that the vinyl outer layer will peel (plus it doesn't look as cool as the booq :p ) By the way this is for college use...so the powerbook will be wedged between/under books and handled roughly sometimes..not that I'd mean to. Therefore, I'm most concerned with impact protection and sleeve rigidity (sp?). Thanks in advance for the feedback!

I've had my Shinza for 4 months now, I really like it. I haven't yet dropped it but it does bounce around in my backpack quite a lot and I do tend to toss it on the couch when I get home so it has had some abuse but nothing major.
The edges are all reinforced with an extra bead of the same foam the case is made of and it seems really stiff. The only thing I dislike about it is that the fabric on the outside seems to pill, sort of like a sweater would so it doesn't keep its newness like a glossier or sturdier fabric would.
The great thing though is that it is totally anonymous. I really like the Booq bags but they scream "expensive bag with laptop inside" and I'd just as soon not advertise that fact. So, my $30 backpack is the carrier and the Shinza is the protection and it works great.

has anyone ever used the tom bihn brain cell, booq vyper, or crumpler school hymn for the PB 12"? how do those compare? I just bought a PB and really really want to make sure it's well protected running it around in college. Right now the brain cell looks the most protective, but it's also $15 more than the other 2. I'm willing to pay the extra money, but i was just wondering if anyone had experience with any of these to offer a comparison/review. Thanks!

I'm headed off to college in the fall and recently purchased a 15 inch PB.
Looking at booq's site has me intrigued in the BP3 and the Boa.XM with a vyper sleeve on the side. The BP3 seems like it would be a better school backpack with laptop carrying capabilities, but the Boa.XM is a much sleeker bag (in my opinion)
Can anyone comment on the college capabilities of either bag?

I'm looking for the Incase Portfolio Maharam Series in either the Downtown or Safari color schemes. If anyone knows where I can pick one of these up, please let me know. I'm deciding between one of those (if I can ever find one) or a Brenthaven Profile 12/15. Give me your thoughts.

So, I e-mailed Incase about my question and they told me that both the Moya and Maharam lines have been discontinued. This is very disappointing. I guess it is off to the Brenthaven Profile 15 or Pro 12/15. What do you guys think would be best? Take in mind that it will be for a 15" PowerBook and I will be attending college with this bag.

I just bought an incase Nylon backpack for my 17" Powerbook. I was considering the Axio Hybrid and was going to purchase the Booq XL, but when I went to the Apple Store I couldn't justify spending another $100 on a bag. (Incase backpack was $60).
I'm very happy with the bag - it has all the compartments I need and my Powerbook is pretty well padded and it fits my 17" fine.
The best part is the bag looks pretty small. Looks just as big as most regular backpacks but fits everything I need it to (Powerbook, couple notebooks, 1-2 books, CD's/ipod/pencils/misc).

I received my Booq Vyper XS for the 12" PB/iBook and it is a gem. It fits my father's iBook perfectly and, in my opinion, my PB even better. The resistant foam is quite strong and the whole unit feels very durable. The zippers are well-removed from the interior, so as to not allow contact between the laptop and the zipper line (there is a fabric partition to guard against scratches). I am very pleased.
I've been trying to buy the Booq Viper M sleeve for over 1 month now. They keep pushing back the date of shipping. And they have not sent any emails about the delay. How can they run a business like this?
I ordered mine on June 8th and at the time the shipping date was June 10th. My order did not ship on that date and the next listed shipping date was June 20th. My order shipped of June 20th and received it in two days. Booq is not a large manufacturer of goods and does therefore not have large resource for mass manufacturing. If you want one of the products, order now, just as they suggest, and you'll get it in as soon as it is available. From the detail and care I am witnessing in this Vyper XS, I do not blame them for taking their time to get products to customers. As a testament to the waiting list, it just shows that people see the quality and value in their goods.
To realityisterror, check out the Vyper sleeves if you want just the sleeve. The PowerSleeves are nice, but serve more so as a full laptop & accessory bag.

This is a great forum and thread! I've been trying to make up my mind on a work-in type sleeve for a 12" powerbook - and I've finally decided upon either the Zeroshock or STM Rebound sleeve...
Only problem - shinza.com website says they're currently out of Zeroshock 12" and give no definite date when they'll be available - Rebound sleeves seem to be available in Australia, England, Europe - but I am in New York, NY, USA and would rather not pay huge shipping costs and have to wait 3 weeks for delivery from overseas.
Zeroshocks are being sold on US ebay by I think "Elecom Warehouse" who charge .99 for the bag itself but $36.00 for shipping. Also- didn't go through ALL the glowing user comments on thier page, but those I saw were obviously copy and past job fakes (several "A++++!'s", etc.).
I have no experience buying on ebay, so maybe someone can reassure me that the above is some sort of common ebay practice and the seller seems fine (maybe high shipping prices deal with export costs from Japan?)
Barring that - anyone know of anyplace in the US that carries not just STM bags, but specifically the Rebound bag?
-Or - know when Shinza.com is going to get in a new shipment of 12" Zeroshocks? (I emailed them to ask, but they haven't replied)
-Finally - the Radtech Neocase - in pictures it looks like the current Shoreline sleeve, which I find too flimsy for my tastes - has anyone actually SEEN it and can say if the Neocase is any more substantial?-----------Thanks!

When I had my 12", the Booq fit it like a glove, loved that. Not sure about the Crumpler though. It too might work great.
One frustrating thing is that neither the 14" or 15" Powersleeve fit the 15" Powerbook as well as the 12" Booq fits the 12" PB.

Thanks ChuckF. Two follow-ups for you:
1. How bulky (or not) is the Vyper? It *looks* like it may be bulky, but one can never really tell these things unless one has one at hand, like you :)
2. How is the workmanship? (I've heard some people complain the stitching is shoddy).

I don't think its bulky at all, fits the iBook like a glove. Craftsmenship seems very good, solid zippers that mesh well and shouldn't sratch the case at all. It doesn't have a top handle which would have been a nice addition.

I've recently ordered the Booq Powersleeve, had it almost a week now. It's built real nice, and seems pretty durable. I ordered the Powersleeve 15 but recieved the 14. The 14 is a little bit smaller than the 15, but fits the 15" Powerbook just fine. I'm able to fit my power adapter, Shuffle, iPod, and some cables in the front. I could fit some papers, a magazine or two in the back as well. I was originally going to go with the Incase sleeve, but went with the Powersleeve in the end. I don't regret my purchase one bit. If I do purchase another laptop case it will be from Booq.

I agree that the quality of Booq's products is great. I just got their Vyper XS sleeve last week. While my Powerbook does move around inside it a little, it still does a great job. If their backpacks are made as well as the sleeves, I might just have to get one of those too eventually. :D

I just found the STM Rebound at Radtech!! They're in the process of putting it online, but I ordered it on the phone at 877-777-9088. I'm SUPER exciteed for one main reason: it comes in 5 sizes, so it will fit the 12" powerbook like a glove. It has been the BIGGEST hassle trying to find protective sleeves for the 12" powerbook because retailers apparently want to save money and make the sleeves to fit BOTH the iBook and the powerbook (i.e. the Shinza Zeroshock). The iBook is a bit larger than the powerbook, and I don't appreciate having the powerbook slip around...if you're as picky as I am (and I know I'm picky)...this STM discovery should excite you TREMENDOUSLY. I'll post once I actually receive the case though...

Hmm I just wanted to update, I actually returned my Brenthaven Fusion and got a Sleevecase and bag from Waterfield (http://www.sfbags.com)... and haven't looked back since. Reasons I went with Waterfield: style, function, and build-quality. Just like my Mac, Waterfield exceeded all three. :)
Unlike the crappy Brenthaven it has really strong metal D-rings and hardware (not shoddy plastic) and I can throw it in any bag I want or use it with the included shoulder strap. They run a little high in price but they're custom-made in San Francisco. I asked the owner many questions before I bought (also bought the Large Cargo bag, which works with the Sleevecase), more often than not he personally answered me in length. The craftsmanship is nothing short of amazing. Incredibly comfortable. A high price for laptop travel but worth every penny.
I should add that they can make one of these in like 20 different sizes.

It is ok, I've a Shinza sleeve that I just toss into my North Face backpack and it's fine. The only issue is that if there's nothing else in the bag, the sleeve tends to slide around a lot. I don't know if it is really an issue or not but my gut feeling is that it would be better if there wasn't so much play.

Hey Steadmuffin,
In the end I went with the bitolithic pack, as it came with a screen protector (by their own admission, not as fancy as the one by RadTech, but seems it will be okay; the person I talked to at bitolithic was really great in answering my questions and was very candid about their product and others I was looking at, and this was part of the reason I went with them in the end.) and a case for my mouse and power supply, in addition to the sleeve, for a decent price. I also liked its looks (nothing fancy, just a decent looking thin sleeve, which is what I wanted) and that the zipper goes around 3 sides, so I can ‘leave’ my iBook in the case when I use it.
That said, while I have ordered the bitolithic pack (just last week), it has not yet arrived (they are in Australia, I am in Canada, so it can take up to 2 weeks). I’ll post some comments on what I think of it when I actually get it.
No idea about the foofbag, sorry. Hope this helps a little.

Akm, yeah the person I emailed at bitolithic answered all my questions really quickly too. She was great. I think I'm going to go with them unless I find something a lot better at my local future shop, which I doubt.
I live in Canada too (Ottawa, Ontario)! Can you let me know how long it takes to get to you, and also if you have to pay GST/HST/PST and any import duties? That's basically the only thing holding me back from ordering it, I'm worried there's some kind of import duty, but there probably isn't.
Anyway, thanks for giving me your opinion on the bitolithic case. Hope to hear about it soon.
Is it ok to use a sleeve in a regular backpack, im on a very very tight budget so I was thinking about using my sleeve and keep my Jansport bag from last year. Is this ok?
I was at the Apple store in Sacramento, CA today to buy an Airport Express. Ahhhh, the joys of wireless!
Anyhoo, they had some bags there so I checked them out and ended up buying
this. (http://www.stmbags.com.au/sports) It has a separate padded pocket for the computer, a special pocket for an iPod and lots of storage space for whatever. It seems really well made, although it doesn't have that "steal me, there's an expensive laptop inside" look. And, best of all IMO is the price, only $50.
It's made for computers up to 15" but the computer compartment has a velcro strap and a drawstring at the top so my 12" PB fits pretty snug inside. I'll continue to use my Shinza as added protection but I highly recommend the STM bag.
Hie everyone. I'm new here but I've been reading aroung a lot before I bought my PB 12inch 2 days ago. I was searching high and low for the STM rebound bag because I knew it would be hard for me to find them once I'm back in the States (currently in my home country, Malaysia). I didn't know Radtech had put up theirs online recently when I finally found it just now at the local Apple store. I bought it for RM99 (USD 26). Its a perfect fit for the PB and doesn't move around at all. I thought I'd provide some pics in case someone needs to see them in "action" :P.

Hi everyone,
I'm in the market for a backpack for my 15-inch PowerBook, and there are WAY too many choices. My head was spinning just looking at that list!
I'll be using the backpack for the PB, my iPod, cell phone and probably quite a bit of school-related stuff.
Anyway, I believe I've narrowed it down to the following choices (Booq Vyper M sleeve applies to all):
1. Brenthaven Pro 15/17: I'm kind of leaning away from these because they don't seem to have a unique style to them, and I personally don't think it's big enough for my needs. Plus I think they're too expensive for what you get.
2. Booq BP3 [system]: This is one of my top choices, but I'm concerned with the external dimensions. The sheer number of pockets coupled with the dimensions leads me to believe that the pockets and compartments are not very big. It says you can stack books up to 6" high, but I don't see that happening based off of their pictures. Any users care to comment?
3. Crumpler BeerBack: I think this is my top choice because of the sheer size of it. I'm curious as to how much the 15-inch PB will move around the backpack while in the Vyper sleeve, so if anybody could comment on that, I'd appreciate it.
So, those are my thoughts, and I'd love to hear any comments or other recommendations you may have for me.

I ordered and received my Booq Vyper XS. At first my initial impressions weren't all that great. I guess I was expecting something else in my mind from this sleeve, something like leather I suppose. Well after using this product for the last few days I can safely say this is a great product. The material protects much better and is very easy to carry around. The size is perfect for my 12" iBook as advertised and hardly adds any weight. I'd recommend this product to anyone that's thinking of getting a good sleeve for their 12" iBook, and I have already got a friend to buy one.
Good stuff!

Is anyone interested in swapping their Booq Vyper M or L Sleeve for my Red Crumpler School Hymn 15? I hope it's okay that I posted this here, I just figured this would be a more fitting place. Here is a link to my thread in the MarketPlace. (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=143420)

When I bought my 17" widescreen PD, I bought the Crumpler Basetoucher backpack.
Am very disappointed with it - there is no way to fit pretty much anything else in it, expect the laptop. With the laptop in it, you can zip it up and no more, any sort of addition (even just a pad of paper, or say a couple of t-shirts in the front section) prevents the zip from closing.
Going to try and get a refund from the apple store on it. (what are my chances of that?)
So can anyone else recommend a rucksack for the 17" PB that actually holds some other stuff in it....?

I have a 15" Powerbook and am looking into getting the either the Booq Vyper sleeve M/L, the MacCase sleeve, or the FoofBag. However, I need to know which one will offer better protection. I'm leaning towards the Foofbag because it doesn't have zippers. Zippers scare me, I do not want my gorgeous PB getting scratched! Also, my PB will be in the Sleeve of my choosing, then in a laptop bag. What one do you guys think? Anyone have any experience with the MacCase or a Foofbag? I can't figure out for sure if the Foofbag fully closes once the Powerbook is inside, or if one end of the sleeve remains open. I really need some advice here, I espically want to talk to someone who has used a Foofbag!!!

The foofbags defenitley do not close fully. The end that you insert the 'book into always stays open. There are no zippers or latches or anything.

I totally recommend investing in the Screensavrz. In my opinion they are a dire necessity. Yes, keyboard marks are a problem, it would take a while for you to start noticing them, but nobody wants marks on their screen. I'm telling you I have a ScreensavR for my Powerbook and I love it!!! Because of the Microfiber, they are really useful for cleaning the screen and casing.

Hey Steadmuffin (and other Canucks to whom this information applies); It took unusually long for the bitolithic pack to arrive, but it reached me in Toronto today (took 12 business days and the bitolithic people were concerned it was taking so long when I talked to them, but assured me they would take care of it if it still had not reached me by the end of this week). Canada Customs charged $CDN 11.52 on it, of which $5 was some generic ‘handling fee’ and the balance ($6.52) was GST/PST. This ended up making the pack more expensive than I had anticipated, but it looks and feels good, so I’m still happy. I’ll try and grab a digital camera if I can and post some pics/review when I get the time.
Hope this helps.

Just received my package from Bitolithic- http://www.bitolithic.com/
The neoprene is a little lighter-weight than I expected, but the case is nice and tight (form fitting) on my 12" iBook.
Construction is top-notch, quality stitching and zippers all around. Shipping to Canada took around 2 weeks total, and was very well priced... (judging from the postage on the package, they're not charging enough :) .)
Not padded well enough to provide a high level of crash protection, but it will definitely protect against scratches and light bumps while it sits in youR backpack.
The screen protector is basically thin fleece, but it works. The mini (accessory) bag is a nice bonus too for stashing your charger or iSight.

Hello.
I am considering the Crumpler "The Moderate Embarrassment" for a 12" PowerBook. I plan on using this bag to carry my laptop and books to school. I will be riding my bike and would appreciate some extra protection on the off-chance that I take a spill.
Can anyone comment on the shock-protection of the built-in laptop compartment of this bag? Should I be looking at purchasing a sleeve to fit in the bag (such as the Rebound), or is the current protection enough? And if I need a sleeve, will one actually fit or is the compartment very snug?
Any info would be most appreciated!

I decided against the Booq Vyper mainly due to the zippers. I had the School Hymn, and didn't really feel comfortable with it because of the zippers. I ended up going with the TimBuk2 quilted sleeve in orange. Its freakin' Awesome!!

Just bought this bag from the Gap for £19.50 (30€). Thought people may be interested to see it and to offer their advice if they think it is ideal for protecting a 12" iBook etc.
I really wanted a Crumpler Wack-o-phone, but for the time being this Gap bag seems to be quite good. See pics attached. My only concern is that the laptop section does not have a flap to fully enclose the iBook, so an edge of the iBook is showing and not fully protected from dust/bits etc, there's only a small velcro strap to hold it in place until the main bag flap is closed.
The padding seems fairly adequate but I haven't compared this to other laptop bags and wouldn't know how it compares to a Crumpler as I haven't been able to get my hands on one to inspect one yet.
The size of the bag is quite small but seems to have quite a few sections to store everything from an iPod (or other music playing device) with slot for ear/headphone cable; a mobile phone pouch built into the shoulder strap; various smallish zip pockets that I'm sure would easily fit the power adaptor; a section to hold a thin book and the main compartment would hold one, maybe two text books and some other bits. The actual fit of the iBook into the laptop section is a bit of a squeeze but I'm hoping that this will loosen up. There's no way that the laptop section would fit a 12" iBook with a sleeve.
Bought this from a UK store.

I already have a compartment inside my backpack where I can put my laptop (12" iBook) but I decided to buy a sleeve, just in case! After looking at the comments in this thread, I decided to go with the Shinza Zeroshock and I must say that I'm very pleased. It's relatively small, provides a good fit for the iBook and seems to be able to take quite a beating.. but I'll try not to test it soon!

After long-term lurking on this forum i finally registered because this topic is just what I was looking for! Hopefully someone can answer this slightly stupid question...
I have a 12" ibook and ordered the Crumpler School Hymn after reading good things about it... it was only after the transaction went through that I realised, duh, actually the School Hymn is made specifically for the Powerbook not its fatter sibling. However I've read reviews that say the 12" Powerbook is not exactly a snug fit inside the School Hymn, so I'm hoping the iBook can squeeze into it.. does anybody know? Anybody tried it? Or maybe I should get about cancelling my order before they ship it..

I have recently purchased the Crumpler Part and Parcel. One good thing about the built in Crumpler laptop compartments is that the bottom of the sleeve does not extend all the way to the bottom of the bag, thus reducing the risk of the laptop taking a hit from a straight drop. If you ride a bike with a messenger style bag you'll definitely want the feature of a stabilizing strap. I'm not certain the Crumpler Embarassment series utilizes this, but I know the Hee-Goer, Part and Parcel, the Horseman, and the Cashmere Blazer do (same bags, increasing in size). Crumpler calls this (in typical Crumpler crude) the 'third leg'. The sizes are comparable to the different Embarassment bags. Unfortunately Crumpler is too smart-assed to provide decent info about their products which almost prevented me from purchasing one. However, the website turd splats were funny, the Crumpler attitude and humor grew on me, and I realized they do make pretty nice bags. (P.S. However, do not pay $130 for one. Check out the previously suggested Academic Superstore and ebay. Also, a lot of bike shops will run deals on certain messenger bags.)

Here is a thought;
My wife is a seamstress and I have asked her to make me a sleeve for my PB. Then I read all this here. I asked her if it would be worth her while to make some and maybe try selling them. She said she would give it a try.
I'll post a pic when she gets mine done. I told her they need to be somewhat padded and the interior should be pretty much static free. Any other suggestions? I told her no zippers or anything scratchy. Maybe just a tie latch on the open end or something.
What do you think? The quality would be good knowing her. They would also be durable. I also told her they would have to be no more than $15.

After reading many of the post I have decided I should invest in a keyboard cover for my Powerbook. What are most keyboard covers made of? One you are content or happy with? Radtec?
I question my motives when I think of skipping to Wal-Mart and purchasing a cheap fabric to cover the Keyboard. Seemingly a lack of common sense? Spending for the Powerbook, case, then a sleeve, now a desire to get cheap?
Thank for allowing me to chat aloud.

I plumped for the Zeroshock sleeves as they seemed to offer much better padding and protection and were much cheaper than the Tucano variants. PC World are selling these at good prices - I paid £10 for the 12" for my iBook. They did not have a widescreen version, but I found that the 14" sleeve at £13 stretched nicely to give a snug fit for my PB 15". I liked the look of the School Hymn, but at £35  a pop they could not compete with the Zeroshocks. Both laptops are in pristine nick despite constant travelling.

Hello All,
I, like many of the other readers of this forum, am waiting with baited breath for Apple to upgrade the powerbook.
Anyways, I have a question regarding cases. I was thinking about purchasing a case for the new machine now so I can have it ready to go when I get the new powerbook (i still have some faith that it will come soon).
From what you all know about powerbook upgrades, do you all think that the phyiscal size and form factor of the machine will change with the upgrade that is rumored to coming soon? Is it a safe bet to buy the case now?
I'm thinking about getting the Booq Viper M. Seems like it's going to give the best protection for my new investment. Please feel free to also give impressions of this. I have heard a range of different beliefs on the best case from responses on this forum.
Thank you all for your help...... Hopefully the powerbook upgrade will be coming soon!

Okay, I am home from my day-long excursion with the Crumpler. I bought an Orange/Orange model of the Moderate Embarassment (it has a light green interior). I think that overall, I enjoy it, although it is not what I expected.
The bag itself is very small. It has a compartment sewn to the back wall on the inside of the bag for your laptop. My 12" iBook fits almost entirely inside it, with a flap coming over the top to cover most of the top edge. All sides (including the flap, which does not completely cover the top edge of the computer) of the compartment are padded about 0.3", I'd guess. There is a slight space underneath the bottom of the padded compartment and the bottom of the bag (Maybe 1.5"). There is a zippered compartment attached to the padded laptop portion, as well as space for two pens and some business/credit cards. On the opposite side of the bag (the front interior) there are three pockets, the middle one of which closes with a square of velcro. There is also a zippered compartment behind that which I put my powersupply in. The bag held my laptop, powersupply, ipod, a few random cords, a 300 page book and some pencils comfortably. I tried to add a 5-subject notebook, but there wasn't room. There is a removable pad for your shoulder, and the bag flap both velcros and clips. I would say the construction seems to be quality.
The bag is not entirely what I expected in that it is smaller and holds less than I would have wished. It is highly preferable to a bag made only to hold a laptop, though, and may help me cut down on the load of books I usually carry to class. When it was entirely full, it was much lighter than my other bag (which is typically fully loaded with books), so this might be a good thing. All in all, after one day of use, I would recommend it with the caveat that you are aware that the bag is small and will not hold much more than your laptop, a book or two, and all the accessories your computer needs (ipod, cords, mice, power supplies, extra batteries, etc).

Thanks for the thorough review. I am looking at the considerable embarrassment for my 15" PB. I am still not sure. I am leaning towards the Crumpler but I am still looking around. Thanks again for you input.

I want to buy an ibook tomorrow and do not know a lot about it?
my questions:
-has it an internal microphone?
-what about the speed? I'm a law student from europe and I have a packard bell easynote d notebook whith is pretty slim and has a lot of speed, but windows sucks. The bettery's life has 2,5 hours (it was 4h).
-I used openoffice on it, an I had a french and german dictionnary, so that when I was writting on it, openoffice wrote long words automaticly when I tipped the 3 first letters. Does something like that exists for the os x?
-I need the ibook for 6-7h a day? what about the autonomy of the battery? I have no possibility to recharge it.
-what about 12 october? update probable?
-is my packard better (512 ram, 40gig hd, 15"(it's to big for school))
I really want that thing, so I can give the packard bell to my father.
Please help me. I want to become a member of the mac community.

I just want to report that I bought a Tucano Second Skin folder for my new 17" PowerBook. It gives a good protection against scratches. I use it inside my Boblbee backpack, so I just needed a sleeve.
And the Tucano does what I expected. There's a lip that protects against scratches from the zipper. And the price was reasonable. I think it was $23 from the local college bookstore.

Okay, will you guys help me out here? I want a sleeve (black is fine) that is just that. jsut a plain neoprene sleeve that will zip up and fit snug with a 15"pb, and i mean nice and snug. PM me your suggestions and maybe where i can get them. k? Thanks guys!
EDIT: forgot to mention, i do NOT want any extra pockets on the thing, no straps, no logos (if it needs to it can). I just want the plainest sleeve to do the job. So basically, 2 key words. PLAIN and SNUG

The Tucano Second Skin sound like just what you need. There is a small logo on it, but it doesn't bother me.

Zero Halliburton -- for a 12" PB -- the Z5 (13.8 x 18 x 4 in.) or the Z5 Small (11.3 x 16.5 x 4 in.)? Which fits best? Which works best?

This thread has been amazing. I ordered a Foofbag for my 12" PowerBook and I love it. I spend a lot of time at the library, so I like to be able to put my laptop in the sleeve and then put it in my backpack without worry about scratches. And I put my PowerBook on top of my Foofbag so that if I knock over my Starbucks, it'll just dirty up the bag and not ruin my computer. The bag is bright pink, very cute and stylish. I've been getting lots of compliments on it, and my friend liked it so much that she decided to order a Foofbag for her 14" iBook. Without this thread, I'd probably be stuck with a very boring sleeve.

I have a older Crumpler bag for my old WIN XP 12" laptop and I also have one of their camera bags for my digital camera. What you've said is right on the money: the Crumpler bags, because they're so well padded, are always a bit smaller than one would expect from seeing the exterior or even interior dimensions. After reading your review, when I got ready to order a new Crumpler bag for my coming-soon-from Apple 15" Powerbook, and based on my experiences with my other Crumpler bags, I went ahead and ordered the next largest size, the "Dreadful Embarrassment," which is actually the one meant for a 17" laptop, as that way there should be plenty of breathing space for my new 15" PB as well as for the necessary gear that accompanies it. I am definitely a lover of the color orange, so I was ecstatic to find that the new Crumplers come in Orange/Orange! :-)

are any of these bags truely waterproof? I live in Seattle and attend the UW so I need something that can deal with a good ammount of contact with Rain.
Hi Neighbor - I live in Portland and I'm surprised no one's mentioned Trager yet, for the rugged NW snob ;) , which is a Seattle company! The link's below. In Portland we see these bags everywhere - they make bags that are rated by degree of protection for laptops, very rugged (though in the case of the bag I got, not too heavy - which is important for me), practical (pockets for different purposes, and in the best loacations) and yes, rainproof. The bag I just bought is called "Cross Country." It's great cause it's not too big and bulky, can be used as backpack for that occasional need, or just hide the straps away and use the long handle as the currier/carrier type (mail-bag look?). The strap is nice and big and won't move around on your shoulder. It has one of those computer sleeves that comes out or stays in with easy-access, and with nothing around to scratch the laptop. I also like that there's enough room for extra accessories but also a text book and notebook can fit in there, too - but still the bag remains fairly small, compared to others.
Click on the laptop bags ("Laptop Protection") and mine is the Cross Country one, in which the 15" fits in perfectly/snuggly. Online it doesn't say the 15" will fit in it, but the tag on my bag says it fits up to 15".

Hey guys, I'm new to the MacRumors Forums. :)
I have just ordered an iBook 14" and its on its way. I intend to carry it around campus a lot so I'm looking at various sleeves I can protect the iBook with so I can toss it in my backpack.
I've read a good deal of this thread and there are several sleeves everyone seems to like a lot. I have narrowed it down to a few for myself:
1) Booq Vyper.xm
2) Waterfield Sleevecase
Can anyone that has owned these tell about your experience please? Specific likes and dislikes? I like the Vyper for its good looks, heh, but the Waterfield seems so minimalist and easy to use. Not that this hasn't been asked a thousand times already, but what do you guys think?

This thread has been great.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a very water resistant, very secure, extremely durable sleeve? Perhaps not a sleeve, but a thin case at least? When I talk about secure, I mean scratch and tear resistant, and a impact frame would be highly preferable? I mean something really durable and secure, for a 17" powerbook.
Oh, and while I'm at it, does anyone have any recommendations for a pack or combo of cases like SFBags? Theirs are good, but just wondering if there were any others.
Oh, and what is the consensus on the best screen/keyboard protectors?
Cheers for all.

Hi! It arrived on Thursday, but I was preparing to go out of town for a couple of days -- just got home a little while ago -- and so haven't had a chance to be online again until tonight. The Dreadful Embarrassment bag is actually larger than I'd anticipated and now I'm thinking of ordering the Considerable Embarrassment to make a comparison. I'm a petite, small-boned woman and the bag just looks really big hanging off me. The PB fits in the Dreadful Embarrassment with plenty of space and there is room for other stuff as well, with the various pockets that were mentioned. I was surprised that it wasn't better padded, but there is adequate protection for the Powerbook. The bag more resembles a messenger bag than a laptop bag, which is good, as then you're not advertising that there's an expensive PB inside. I've also ordered a sleeve for the PB and that hasn't arrived yet, so I want to see how that works in the Dreadful Embarrassment and the Considerable Embarrassment, too. Once I figure out which one really is best for my needs and my PB, then I'll return the one that isn't as well suited. The color (orange/orange) is yummy and the vivid lime green interior is neat, so I have no problems with that! :)

I ordered an orange sleeve from Timbuk2 and also a black one from Tom Bihn, and again will make the choice and return whichever one isn't quite "right." Fussy, much?! I do like having a sleeve, though, in addition to the carrying case because in the past sometimes I have just popped my 12" PC laptop into my regular luggage and forgone an extra bag to carry, and that way it is still protected. The 12" laptop is an Averatec and two years ago when I bought it, I was able to find a neoprene Sony Vaio sleeve that fit it perfectly. Since then is when I have discovered the joys of all the choices available online. Both of the sleeves I have just ordered are "envelope-style," meaning no zippers, which I think will be better.

...and both are really nice! The black Tom Bihn fits better into the Crumpler, but the Timbuk2 one is so pretty! It's a lovely, vivid orange and the quilted design is very attractive. Too bad they didn't put a shoulder strap on it, as it would be great to use on its own like that. Both sleeves are easy to slip the PB into and both are nicely padded, offering lots of protection.
I went ahead and ordered the Considerable Embarrassment bag so that I can see if it will be a better (smaller) size for me while still comfortably holding the PB and its gear. I believe the compartment for the laptop itself is actually the same size for either bag, it's just the rest of it which is different. The Dreadful Embarrassment bag is really nice, just a bit too large for me. Should've gone with the Considerable Embarrassment in the first place. Oh, well...

I just got an Incase laptop sleeve (for my 14" ibook) on eBay for 30 bucks! They are discontinued....but I managed to find a new one. It's great because it has a removable shoulderstrap. I think the closest thing to it is the Marware sportfolio. However, I heard that the strap is squeaky on that bag. The Neocase from Radtech looks like a good one too. I think it's great to have a case that can be a standalone (therefore it must have some handles or strap), and can be used as a sleeve in a larger bag (those handles and straps have to be concealable or detachable). All three of those have those characteristics.

i juz got my zeroshock for my 14'' ibook. Its awesome!!! Iwas playing around the hardcore cover, and it really didn't make any scratch on the ibook at all. Also, it fits perfectly !!!! SO i don't need to worry about it being scratched by the zipper because of the zipper protection and perfect fit of the case. I got it from ebay for about $30. I highly recommend this case/sleeve for people who carry the ibook around for homework and stuff. It's so easy that I dare to just drop it in my backpack and go. :)
i also placed an order for an isock for my ibook...but it still hasn't arrived yet!argh.............

Yeah I know they are expensive. However, everyone swears by them and the bags. I looked at getting a cargo combo but it came out to just over $300. To me that is expensive. If it is something that is REALLY worth it I might consider it.
The way I look at it is I have over $2500 into my PB that I need something nice that will protect it. I want something that will hold all my cables a binder and possibly a book while providing good protection, is functional and looks good to boot.
I would rather have a messenger type bag and don't really think that I would like a backpack. Being an ex o-lineman I am a big guy@ 6'5" and 285lbs and I don't think the backpack from Booq would work as well.

OK, so I started out by ordering the Dreadful Embarrassment bag from Crumpler because past experience with Crumpler bags had suggested that the one meant for a 15" laptop might be too small. Comments made by someone else on this forum also seemed to bear that out, in his discussion of the bag for the 12" PB. Got the DE bag, which is meant for a 17" laptop, and it works nicely with my Tom Bihn sleeve and the PB tucked inside, but the overall Dreadful Embarrassment bag is REALLY too big, as I'm a petite person and it rather looks a bit too much. So I thought, "OK, let's try the Considerable Embarrassment after all and see...."
It arrived today. The bag size itself is much better for my proportions, but the darned laptop compartment is TOO SMALL for my 15" PB!!!! GRRRRR! I guess because maybe it's meant for regular 15" laptops, not wide-screened?? GRRRRR!!! There is apparently an error on the Crumpler site, too, because in the description of the bag's specs the size dimensions given for the laptop compartment are exactly the same as for the Dreadful Embarrassment, which at the time I thought a bit odd. If they'd given the correct dimensions that might have saved me some frustration, not to mention time and money. <Sigh>
Now it is back to the drawing board as far as the search for the "perfect" bag to carry my PB...

I have one of those gaps in the front right corner of my 15" PB (sorry for the double post BTW - I ask about it in another thread). I don't think a sleeve/glove will hold it tightly enough during transportation, and I've noticed that how I carry the PB (which end goes down and has all the weight on it) makes a difference in how well the lid closes...funny thing is I haven't yet taken note of which way (laying down in bag) affects flush closing cause well I guess cause i'm lazy and forgetful!
Anyway, is there a product out there that is known to hold the lid down tightly enough?
Thanks

I was just trolling looking for new case ideas for my 15" PB, en route as we speak, and I saw this post about STM bags.
I have to tell y'all, the STM bags are amazing. I bike to school with my laptop, and the STM sports bag keeps my 12" baby warm, dry, shock-proof, and happy. So, if you're in the market for a laptop backpack: http://www.stmbags.com.au/sports (rumor has it they're linked on the Apple site now?)
Also, if you want a minimalist case, Acme Made's "The Slim" is super--fits in a purse/messenger/etc, but has an attachable strap if you want to carry it separately. Better yet, when the zipper broke on mine a while back, they overnighted me a new one the next day.
http://www.acmemade.com/theslim.html
I'm intrigued by the Foofbag, and think that might be what I wrap my new 15" PB in...

I have a Booq Vyper XS for my 12" iBook. When it arrived I noticed a couple of defects in the stitching around the case. I contacted Booq and they wanted me to send them some JPG images. I did, and they wrote back confirming it was a defect & they are sending me a new one at no charge. I don't even have to send back the defective one. It really was no hassle warranty support. I am very happy.
Now concerning the case itself. This is a VERY nice case. Even with the stitching defects it is first class, and when the new one arrives I'll be even happier. It fits like a glove & I have no doubts it will protect my iBook for many years to come. I can post some pics if anyone is interested.

I'll be taking a trip next month and I'd like to have a combo laptop/camera bag to carry my gear (Nikon DSLR camera body and a couple of lenses, plus batteries and chargers, CF cards, etc., and my 15" PB with its accompanying power source and BT mouse). Anyone have a good bag to recommend? I noticed the mention of the STM backpack and I'll check that out -- I"ll be going to the Apple store in a couple of days -- but any and all ideas happily accepted! I'm not really a backpack sort of person -- usually I carry my laptop separately and I have a couple of different Domke camera bags that I use, but for this trip since I'll be taking both things with me, might as well try and use one bag for the two of them. Since I'll be staying at a hotel for this trip and won't want to leave the PB in the hotel room during my absence, I need something which I can use to safely and comfortably schlep the PB around with me all day while providing quick and easy access to the camera and lenses for when I''m taking photos. I'm a fairly petite person so don't want to be dwarfed by a huge backpack or bag... Suggestions welcome! Thanks!

Hey guys,
For those looking for a 12" sleeve for a Powerbook,
A few months a ago I paid around $40 for a 12" booq sleeve.
Its a good-looking case, but not as snug of a fit as the website
would have you believe. Its got a little extra height.
The problem was easily fixed by sticking a mousepad inside the
case to take up the extra space.
Pretty satisfied over-all though. As I said it looks dope.

Hi, i'm a bit of a dummy for Macs, i have a MBP on order, expecting that on the 23rd but i need a case for it. This is the first Mac and the first laptop i'm having. The Dimensions for the MBP is 14.1 x 9.6. DOes the MBP and the Powerbook 15" use like the same size case? i have my eyes on this one:

Nice casual one. If you have any other recommendations then please let me know. But i want to know if a MBP would fit this.

The new MacBook Pro is going to be a little thinner and a little wider than earlier versions of Powerbooks, so be careful. Actually, I was annoyed when I bought a Crumpler case for my 15" PB to discover that the thing didn't really fit all that well, that it required some stretching of the fabric in order to make the case usable.... In the meantime I found another case or two which worked just fine to transport my PB when I needed to leave home.
It may take a while for manufacturers to produce carrying cases which will definitely fit the new MacBook Pro comfortably.

Personally I’m getting a Waterfield Designs Sleevecase with flap and a piggyback then get a Cargo Bag in a couple months. I don’t need it right now. This summer when I’m going to be doing more traveling is another matter.

Ok I have been really taking my time looking into which bag to buy and I admit even a little wishy-washy.
I have definitely settled on a Waterfield Cargo Combo. I am going to buy within the next month before my thesis project begins in April.
The only thing that I am still on the fence about is whether to go with the large or the medium. I need a bag that will hold my 15"PB and all the cables and portable FW drive and even a textbook or possibly a 3 ring binder. I think that the large wouold be handy but might be too big for everyday use and I don't like that it isn't as flexible as the medium.
Anyone with the large or medium that could give some insight it would be greatly appreciated.
